I've never felt more at home with anything in my life than when I'm with the Bluecoats.
-
All I know is that our guard was the best I've ever seen it, though I have to say that I think the Quarter- or Semifinals performances may have been better for them. The Cavaliers consistently have a great guard and I really don't know enough about guard to compare the two.

oh you will see stuff worked into the "encores". guarantee it
I still don't see it happening.
-
Doing your own work is both satisfying and a good practice to get into. Here's a start:
-
Are there going to be woodwinds on the field marching in 2011 at these shows? Are they going to have there own rules not under the DCI unbrella?
Why would any of these happen?
Why would we do something in this new "track" if we are still competing in DCI. Nobody wants to learn two shows or two versions of a show just to add woodwinds or anything else like that.
Its not practical, its not wanted. I don't see why this is even being discussed.

unrelated incident, but applicable

I had fallen the previous three reps.
Yeah! crappy fields!

I have to say, that was phenomenal!

A common misconception with DCP folks is that "difficulty" is some kind of end-all, be-all when it comes to design. In fact, the single most important element when it comes to design is EFFECT. A show can be difficult and still not generate enough effect (especially if it is performed at a sub-par level). A show can be not-so-difficult but still generate a ton of effect, thus achieving far more from both sides of the sheets ("easy" enough to be achievable by membership and therefor gaining achievement credit, design being effective and therefor gaining credit).
While difficulty does play into a score/placement, it is more a 'tie-breaker' (to WAY oversimplify). For example, if Blue Devils and Cavaliers are achieving the same exact amount of effect at the same performance level in a judge's opinion in his caption, then the corps that is achieving more from a comp. stand-point will probably get the nod by a .1 or so. That, I imagine, it probably not super common. What is obviously more common, is a corps is attempting more than their membership (or staff) can clean, argues that the difficulty = effect point, and then takes a hit on BOTH sides of the sheets (and then that corps' fans come on here and complain that their "harder" show is unfairly losing to a corps performing an "easier" show )
You said it much better than I did lol

Crossmen can't make it to the dinner, but Spirit holds a seat for them anyway.
-
If there is one thing I learned about drum corps in the past few years, its that difficulty doesn't have NEARLY the impact on score as we'd like it to. it just comes down to whether you are achieving your show or not. Plain and simple.
-
It would be totally sweet to age out with a championship ring. I can hope right?

Just going to say, the guy I talked about earlier definitely didn't have the Blu-Rays. Though I'm sure that really wasn't much of a mystery.
Anyway. I got to see BK-Bluecoats and I have to say that WOW it sounded great (except for some over amplified front ensembles) and that I loved the finals performances of Madison, Cadets, and Phantom. The Cadets were simply awesome. Phantom, gorgeous music and incredible percussion. It was good to see so many UNT students there this year! And Madison, just such a great production. You guys rocked. Carolina Crown's show was much more enjoyable on the DVD than I remember it being from the tunnel. I love the Mahler, and the latin jazz section was cool. Didn't like the end much... And I really enjoyed not having to see what happened Finals.
I am happy to say that I am very proud of the performance the Bluecoats had on Finals night this year. Best Bluecoats to grace the field (so far).
Wish I could have stayed to watch the Cavaliers and Blue Devils, but I was running behind to get on the road for camp.
I love Drum Corps. I'm glad I can still enjoy it. I sincerely hope those of you who have lost your enthusiasm for it can find it again, somehow.
-
why do you think non drum corps fans are going to go to these events?
...Why would non drum corps fans go to any drum corps event?
-
I think the Blue Devils will get a medal of some color. Thats all I have for now.
-
The Bluecoats had a good, well attended camp this weekend. I think it had more to do with a lot of kids liking the shows we've done this past year and the years before, more so than kids wanting to participate in the experimental Tour of Champions that will be happening this summer. Just a thought.
-
There is still quite a bit of loyalty in drum corps. Some corps have been holding onto members for four, five, even six years and have grown significantly in the last seven or eight years because of it.
Very, very true. Want to know why the Bluecoats got their first medal ever this past summer?
Nope, you're definitely not wrong. I had a few friends from high school come with me to Crown's camp this past weekend, some with a serious shot at making the corps and some just for the learning experience. They all got a one-on-one audition and useful advice from the staff if they didn't think they'd make Crown; not "sorry, you're cut", but "you're not quite at the level we need, but you might have a shot next year. In the meantime, you'd have a good chance of making the line at corps x, y, and z, and that experience will help you if you come back here".This happens in a lot of corps from what I hear.
I didn't know that Crown and the Bluecoats won a DCI Title. I do know that 3 Corps win most of them. The success is no doubt the result of top instructors, hard work, good planning. But there is another reason why 3 Corps dominate the activity despite the fact that the Corps change much of their membership each year. That reason is recruitment. Plain and simple. If we allow the Boston Celtics and the LA Lakers to get the top 2 picks in the NBA draft every year, then naturally they'll be on top forever... and it's not because they'll have the best Coach in the business, or that they work hardere or smarter... it'll be principally because they'll get the best talent each and every year. Now,as it relates to the top 3 DCI Corps, nobody here is going to try and make the case that ( say) that the Colts, Glassmen, Troopers, Boston, Madison, Blue Knights, Blue Stars, Bluecoats, Phantom, SCV etc get the same talent walking through their camp doors each November as do the collective 3 Corps of Blue Devils, Cavs, and Cadets.Who said that Crown and Bluecoats won a DCI title? And the reason that the corps that dominate the number of championships won is not JUST members. It's a mixture of members, staff, design, show quality, drill, music, tour schedule, and everything else that goes into a summer. Plus there is SO much talent spread across all of drum corps. I WOULD bet that there is a fairly even amount of talent between the top 4-5 corps.

A great staff can teach well. They can teach the best and they can teach the "15th place talent level" to be great. I put 5-7.

Bluecoats 2010: Asphalt Cocktail

There's a DCI 2010 watching party on the campus of UNT this friday that I can't wait to go to. It'll be my first time to see the top 12!
A friend of mine says he already has the Blu-Ray set... though he may be a dirty liar lol.
-
You're correct. Blue Devils are the only corps Crown has never beat.
Well I guess that's something I have over my Crown friends. I've beaten the Blue Devils (even if it was only once!)

when 2011 BD wins.
lol so true. I'm looking forward to this three-peat

Themes of ANY kind. I don't like em.
I don't go to a fricking show to "Think" about the deeper meaning of whatever off the wall topic some "Artsy Fartsy" (Still the best description of the current state of the activity) corps director and his AF staff can pull out their arses. I go to be entertained with awesome music set to creative drill. Could care less about themes, props, dancing, prancing, emoting, synths, amps, singing, narration and all the other theatrical nonsense that doesn't belong on a football field. For the most part, with a few exceptions, what's on the field now is just NOT entertaining to me. And, unless more and more corps decide to start going a little "Retro", (Like Madison did this past season) I'll not return...........
Awww
Emoting is bad? Dancing is bad? I'm guessing you don't like color guards. Which is ok I guess. I'm sure someone will miss you from the activity.
-
My thoughts are that a good theme can help a show seem more fluid and help it work with audience connection.
A poorly thought out or poorly executed theme definitely takes away from a show.
But a show with no theme and good music is FINE by me!
-
Or...to busy focusing on our own tasks at hand on how to make our own show better and not scuffs of the long past. You don't beat a "rival" or competitior with words, you do so on the field with the crowd deciding who takes the day.
Beat me to it.
Who's the best looking corps out there?
