  1. This is the official statement from the Oklahoma Bandmasters Association regarding the cancellation of State contests:

    OBA Membership,

As all of you know, we find ourselves dealing with a situation that is completely out of our control and very difficult to navigate. COVID-19 has created a set of circumstances that impacts our state and education system and has left us with the inability to host our state contests at our host sites. Given this fact and the long list of other factors that we are facing, the executive board has unanimously made the difficult decision to cancel all 2020 OBA State Marching Contests. We wanted to make this decision as quickly as possible for band program planning but still hold out to make sure that it was the right call. I hope that all of us can work together to help stay positive and keep our artform alive safely during these uncertain times in which we are living. Please let us know if there is anything that we can do to help or support you and your band program. We are going to get through this together.

    Sincerely,

    Executive Board
    Oklahoma Bandmasters Association

  4. I want to thank the very passionate group of six or seven of you who tried to make this season happen. Unfortunately, we just didn't get enough sign-ups to make it worthwhile to run a season. My goal each year is to have at least 40 corps total with 12 corps in every division to make it worth the time and effort of running the season. We only got to about 75% of that this year.

Sadly, this means Season 30 is cancelled. Hopefully 2021 will see a return to some form of normalcy, and we can try running another season with live corps/scores.

    Thank you again.

Out of curiosity: why the specific years chosen? It's an interesting mix (and avoids me using my favorite batch of captions, from 2007, darn you! lol).

    1. I wanted to use years with different DCI champions (Cadets, Crown, Bluecoats, Blue Devils)
    2. I didn't want a run-away or dominant DCI champion (Mainly a Blue Devils problem, but 2018 Vanguard won by over a point, was 1st on 9 of 11 judges sheets)
    3. 2019 had to be included, and I wanted to stay as recent as possible.

Thus, my sheet ended up looking like this...

    • 2019 included (Blue Devils)
    • 2018 rejected (SCV too dominant)
    • 2017 rejected (Blue Devils already represented)
    • 2016 included (Bluecoats)
    • 2015 rejected (Blue Devils already represented)
    • 2014 rejected (Blue Devils already represented)
    • 2013 included (Carolina Crown)
    • 2012 rejected (Blue Devils already represented)
    • 2011 included (The Cadets)
    • ...if I had chosen to go further/include more seasons...
    • 2010 rejected (Blue Devils already represented)
    • 2009 rejected (Blue Devils already represented)
    • 2008 would have been included (Phantom Regiment)
    • 2007 rejected (Blue Devils already represented)
    • 2006 would have been included (Cavaliers)
    • 2005 rejected (The Cadets already represented)
    • 2004 rejected (Cavaliers would have been represented by 2006)
    • 2003 rejected (Blue Devils already represented)
    • 2002 rejected (Cavaliers would have been represented by 2006)
    • 2001 rejected (Cavaliers would have been represented by 2006)
    • 2000 rejected (Cavaliers would have been represented by 2006; The Cadets already represented)

No years prior to 2000 will ever be used do to different judging sheets.

Please help spread the word. I can start planning in May and get things set up in early June, but the season will be canceled if we don't get enough participants.

Please recruit as much as you possibly can.

It was Gaines's first year to write drill, so I can see where you'd say that.

Saucedo didn't arrive to the Cavies until 2000 - anyone know who wrote the brass book in 98 and 99?

Bruce McConnell did 1999 and I think also 1998.

Les Etoiles were also at that show in 1999. What year did they have the contraption with the drummers spinning? Because I definitely remember that.

    1998, "The Rock"

I think you are the one who doesn’t understand.

Incorrect. The Blue Devils show didn't "predict" the shutdowns of theater performances or the DCI season simply by using a ghostlight as the basis for their show, because ghost lights are often used every day regardless of whether the theater is open or not; i.e., they are not a predictor of a theater being open or closed long-term.

  9. We are still running a fantasy drum corps season this summer, Drum Corps Planet International season 30! Create your own corps! Set a tour schedule! Choose real DCI corps from recent history to be your "captions"! But just like in fantasy sports, do it all within a "budget." You can have Crown's brass, Vanguard's percussion, or the Devils' visual analysis... but it'll cost ya. The first shows are on Thursday, June 18th.

Contact me for more info, or go to https://www.drumcorpsfantasy.com/ and sign up today!

  10. I didn't care for Cadets musically in 1998, but visually they were almost perfect. Still some of the best marching I've ever seen. I still remember the rapid-change, cascading color palette of flags backfield.

Loved Vanguard's show. In another year it might have won. But man, their brass was gassed by the end of the show, and you could hear it.

  13. We are still on schedule. I will post the tours today, and the site should be up and running for sign-ups in the next 7-10 days. The season's first shows will be on Thursday, June 18th and there will be shows every Mon, Tue, Thr, Fri, and Sat. Wednesdays and Sundays will always be off days/travel days.

Hailing from northeast Ohio as I do, it was pretty great on only my second ever Finals attendance, and this time (unlike 2012) in great seats where the sound wasn't horribly distorted, to see the local corps win it all. Total serendipity, since I had arranged to get that ticket well before the season started. That top three was something else. And "Downside Up" was such an entertaining show. I was rooting for it to win.

If only Bluecoats' show hadn't been so influential. "Relentless" was executed so well and is more like what drum corps ought to be, in my opinion, and too often abandoned since. (Not by Crown, exactly, but their three subsequent shows just felt so random.) Early on in the season, someone pointed out that Crown's drill was pretty cramped toward the front, but it's wide open compared by comparison to the staging that so often has been rewarded since.

I was there too in 2016, and definitely rooting for the Coats to win. They certainly had the crowd engagement aspect locked up.

Perhaps this is one of those instances where audio/video recordings can only convey so much. But the more I watch/listen to and review the 2016 shows, the better Crown's show seems to me.

I feel the exact opposite. I thought BD was the best corps in 96, BD was the best corps in 99, and Cavaliers were the best corps in 2000. Of the 3, I feel 2000 was the one that could have legitimately been a tie.

    Mike Z

96 and 00 I can only go by video, but I was there in 99 and Vanguard absolutely brought it in Finals. Devils had a strong opener but then kind of a lackluster run after that. The effect gulf was 1. Vanguard, 2. Scouts, and then everyone else way, way, way behind them.
