  1. It is not in DCP's interest to call for the firing of anyone. It is not our policy and not our way of conducting business, and therefor I have edited your Topic Tite to remove the words "Official DCP".

It's rash for sure for anyone to call for removal of a judge. And I don't think we should do that here with Marie Czapinski, who has spent many years in both teaching, instructing and judging.

That said, it is worth noting how subjective, truly subjective ,judging can be.

2 judges, both with years of training and experience, can look at the same thing and come up with almost entirely contrary opinions and be world's apart on a Corps design of a show. which is what GE Visual is principally about.

    .

So in 4 days, one judge ( Ed Warren ) sees Boston performing better than the Cadets in this GE Visual Caption, and another judge, Marie Czapinski has Boston 12th out of 13 Corps in that same GE Visual caption,..... barely ahead of Pioneer.

The lesson here is that Judges also have differences of opinion on Corps design and performances. And in the case here.... a GIGANTIC difference of opinion. These 2 could not have been further apart in their evaluations.

That's because the Cadets and the Pioneers are nowhere near the same level of Corps. An yet two well respected judges can't agree within 4 days of one another if Boston is slightly better than The Cadets or slightly better than the Pioneers in the caption that they are asked to judge.

I applaud Boston here though . Few of their fans have come out screaming on this and are prepared to just let it go and move on to the next show.

That's a great attitude. If their fans can do so, I am prepared too as well. But it just shows all of us how judges can be miles apart in their opinions on Corps too

  2. From what I saw, no way should BAC be beating Cadets in this caption. No way. So maybe their scores from 5 days earlier were way too high.

Maybe the score should be somewhere in the middle, between where they were scored 5 days ago, and where they were scored last night.

Why is it we see WIDE swings in placements and scores with Corps outside the top 6.

But not at the TOP ?

When was the last time a Corps won a caption, then less than 5 days later finished WAY off the top in that caption ?

I don't know how long you've been following this activity, HockeyDad, but the answer is.....

None. Not a drop such as this, anyway.

Wide placements and scoring happen to Corps below the top 6.

Do you think the Cadets will drop in GE Visual like this in scoring and placement compared to other Corps in any show this year ?

    Not a chance, my friend.

  3. Exactly. BAC did not impress me at all visually last night. Were they "clearly better than" Blue Stars and Madison? No, not from what I saw there, 50 rows up on the 50 yard line. Is it possible they were scoring too high earlier?

Ms. Czapzinski had Pioneer closer to Boston last night in her caption ( 1.2 point differential ) than Boston to Glassmen and Blue Stars. ( 1.2-1.4 )

    Pioneer.

Judge Warren less than 5 days earlier had Boston topping the Cadets in this very same Caption.

    The Cadets.

Boston 11th in GE Visual last nite..... barely ahead of Pioneer ?

    I ... don't.....think...... so.

  4. How would you like to be a DCI judge? Low pay, long hours, and you can NEVER make everybody happy. I was there last night. BAC is a corps I love, but, last night........ I don't know. Is is possible the earlier season scores were too high??

She had Pioneer 1.2 points behind Boston last night in her caption., for heavens sake

This 1.2 point differential was LESS than the point differential in this caption between Boston and Glassmen. and the same 1.2 behind Blue Stars.

Nothing against Pioneer, but Ms. Czapinski frankly must have be feeling under the weather last night if she thought Pioneer was closer to Boston in her caption she was judging last night than Boston was to Corps like Glassmen, Blue Stars.

My guess, Ms. Czapinski was coming down with a fever, cold or something and it was effecting her judgement.

Boston beat the Cadets in this caption less than 5 days before.

How does one go from beating the Cadets.......

to barely beating Pioneer in the same caption 5 days later ?

This is mostly a design judged caption. Not a performance generated caption, if you understand the judging captions, HockeyDad.

  5. I'm bored, but BACs score last night was completely out of line and she should be brought under review for it. I'm not being hypocritical, I like the concept of any given night but that's taking it a little too far i'd say... Anyone else want to throw out some weird scores they've seen by judges that make you go "eh??" ?

Ms. Czapinski is generally an OK judge, but even top basketball players have off nites with few points, assists ,etc.

Poor Marie. To use a metaphor... Last nite she was not on her game, got in foul trouble, and fouled out early.

For Marie it should have been a DNP last night.

    Did Not Play.

Her placing Boston in 11th in Visual GE last night was a pathetic evaluation and judgement by her.

She had.... " a very bad game " last night.

  6. Composers use speech/narration/singers to portray things all the time in music...

    Stravinsky did it...

    Copland did it..

    Prokofiev did it..

    Barber did it...

Everyone has done it. I don't see the problem.

    BTW: That Viagra joke.......not good

Barber used "speech/ narration/singers, etc " to portray things ( to an audience)

    Yes he did.

    And so didn't Barnum.

It's all in how you do it, and how you perceive your audience, and whether or not you connect with most of them at some level that enriches them in some way from witnessing your performance.

The Cadets show may score very well because it has solid talent, but for most in the audience around the country it is a clunker and a dud.

  7. NO...

In 2005 there was very much a split decision early on about the show... some liked, some hated, some loved. And I think most of the people who hated it was just because the fact there was amplified voice. This years show is basically getting like 0.5% positive reviews. How many people have you talked to who likes this show?

Agree. I've liked LOTS of Cadets shows over the years., including Dreamscapes

but this year's show ?..... the musical chords played, while played well, just clashed and gave my ears a totally unpleasant sound.

If this show was on Broadway, the Lenders would yank the show, the doors would be shut, designers and producers fired, performers sent home, it's that poorly conceived. ( my opinion )

But the kids paid for the opportunity, so it's THEIR Summer, they're working hard, making friends, and Pursuing their Happiness if you will, etc, and that's what really matters to that Corps.

  8. How can Boston, who beat Cadets in visual two shows ago and was only tenths below The Cadets in their last show end up 11th in visual in Madison? Their visual GE was clearly better than that of Madison, Troopers, Spirit, Glassmen, Blue Stars and Blue Knights (IMHO). What's up with that?

I agree. Marie Czapinski ihas lost her mind in placing BAC 11th tonite in GE Visual.

She's gone off the reservation regarding how her colleagues in DCI have judged this caption.

I love the Troopers. Don't get me wrong. But the notion that the Troopers should have scored higher than Boston tonite in Visual GE, is fall down funny, it's so absurd. Maybe she spilled coffee on her scoring sheet , got it all mixed up when she wiped it all off and quickly gave it to the tabulator as it was getting late. Who knows.

Probably wouldn't have changed the placements, but would have put Boston closer to Bluecoats, Crown.

Blue Stars are a lock for top 12 in my opinion after watching their show tonite.

The shows well designed both visually and musically. They continue to execute this show, and there is nothing keeping them out of top 12.

The show's got the goods...( my opinion.)

  9. This has been going on for years with several judges. Some corps hate them, some love them. As long as there is personal opinion involved, some corps will get slammed and some will get propelled forward.

As for BC tonight, I think their visual show is just a conglomeration of "been there, done that" drum corps and HS band moves. Nothing original, so how do reward that?

    JMHO.

I frankly didn't see much of anything " original " from ANY of the Corps tonite.

Narration preachiness ? been there,.. done that

Even the Cavs show with the " put the trumpet down, do a dance gig in place, pick up the trumpet, run pell mell to next formation, etc ?..... been there.. done that. ( but they sure do it well )

Crown music... loved it..... but been there, done that too....

At least with Crown, Boston, Blue Stars, their shows were integrated both musically and visually, and overall were entertaining. ( Bluecoats were boring, until their finale I thought)

Close your eyes, and many of the Corps tonite sound almost the same that you can barely tell the difference between them.

  10. Is it my imagination or is Boston going backwards in score? I know its early yet but it looks like they're losing ground on the top corps.

I'd say Blue Knights took more of a plunge this week.

And Madison seems " stuck in the 60"s " When's the last time the Troopers beat the Madison Scouts ?..... " the 60's "?

Spirit beat Glassmen last night, but Glassmen turned the tables on Spirit tonite, and beat them by 1.8 pts.

Bluecoats got some judge love tonite. Moved up a lot, and beat Crown.

  11. Really weird thing about that GE Vis score for Boston is they got 4th in Vis Ensemble. That one doesn't fit at all.

I thought Boston should have received 4th in Visual Ensemble.

I liked Blue Stars, Boston, Crown shows tonite.

But I can see how Cavies won.

Don't get Bluecoats beating Crown tonite. But it might be Percussion that moved them ahead.

I WANT to like the Cadets. They just don't want me too apparently.

They have money, resources, staffing, member talent.

But they are excruciatingly boring this year for me, with or without the insipid and juvenile conversation bit.

Was the narration script in the Cadets show put together by a 13 year old ?

for other 13 year olders to try and appreciate ?

  12. Question - why would a talented person march with the Cadets with all the controversy and negativity that surrounds them especially last year and now this years show sounds even worse (only due to the narration) -

They want a chance to march with a Corps that in the offseason they believe has a chance to win it all.

It's part of their Pursuit of Happiness, plain and simple.

  13. Hopkins isn't the anti-Christ, he is the anti-Stewart.

Can we all agree on one thing? That the Corps that got the worst audience reception at the end of their show tonite appeared to be..........

    The Cadets ?

I mean, when they finished, there was stone cold silence in Wisconsin tonite it sounded like from the Computer screen

But the Cadets kids are working hard, and enjoying themselves, and that's what really counts. So it is what it is.

  14. So when Major League Baseball Teams have Dollar Hot Dog Days, Spanish Nights, Irish Nights, College Nights, Kids free give-aways, Fire Works Night, Bobble Head Night, Bat Day, Cap Day,Lunch Box Day, Father's Day Hat Day, Baseball Card Day, Sports bag Day,Multiple T shirt days, Kids Run the Bases Day and many other Promotional days to sell tickets then I guess they are in trouble too?

well..... SOMETIMES " they are in trouble ". And more like deep doo doo.

Anybody here think we'll see " Disco Night " again any time soon in MLB ?

  15. I have to say, yes I was there, and the breakdown is in the GE captions. Visual: You had members knocking horns almost out of the others hands. A lot of missed spots in marching. Music: Sounded OK, but you had a horn player, clear enough to hear in thefar reaches of the stadium play AFTER the corps stopped ( not a part of the song). I am or was a drummer, and the solo was buzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, buzzzzzzz splat. I will end my diatribe, with this. I WANT Spirit to do well. I want them to EARN the score given. I do NOT want to see DCI SLOT corps based on history. They just didn't earn it last night. That is all. Good luck tonight, and I will drop a ten spot in the Spirit fuel fund just to show I have no hard feelings for them. Carry on, but I gotta go, Madison calls me........

You were there, so you know what you saw and heard. Thanks for sharing your straight forward opinion on it.

  16. Yes, maybe you're right. I just think for one corps to beat the other by a point or so every night for 4 years is lame/impossible.

Or for 35 years the Semi's winner being denied at least piece of the Championship on Finals night only once in that timeframe ( and with a completely different set of juddging panels from Semi's to Final's to boot )..... So, I hear ya.

  17. Feel the love in here...

But, you have to take everything...and I mean EVERYTHING with a grain of salt until we get a full judging panel. Until then just enjoy the ride.

    KSA Spirit!

I agree with this sentiment , and it's high time we get the full judging panels back to see what's what.

But as they say...... " a win is a win ".

    Good for SPIRIT !
