ya know, the funny thing is i do believe your doing this just to get a rise out of people, as you obviously can't believe half of what you are typing

You were doing so well just now too. But then typed in the last word here as " typing "... But I'm pretty sure you made a typo, and meant to type in the last word of your sentence here with " reading ":innocent:

. Hell, a corps can announce a dozen tunes they have in their show, and they way the mish mash stuff together sometimes you still don't recognize...i have yet to hear the Styx thing from BD the other year. A. So in the grand scheme of things, to be as blunt as only I can be....who gives a ####?

Well... it would appear YOU do,  as you comment on it and use profanity in your commentary about it... lol!

many criticisms were lobbed when stuff started getting changed, or show titles announced ( Stoned), and especially when the show didn't live up to the hype....if not outright mocking and scorn.

Yo Cadets...do what you're doing and come out great. several of us on DCP and many are ok if we don't know anything yet

Ok,.. nothing much to see, nor discuss here on the 2019 Cadets thread ( nor any other DCI Corps for that matter ).... so everybody  ( all 8 DCP posters ) can just move along now.

It's hilarious how just a couple years ago, people were annoyed that Cadets were putting out too much information.

Well, GH did have a reputation of talking a lot about Life, the Cosmos,  50 other things in his tweet musings that were completely unrelated to the Cadets... and so the criticisms tended to be about GH and his celestial, deep thinking, navel gazings and what not... but few criticisms were generated about their off season camp videos, as they're really wern't any, as the Cadets followed the recent DCI trends of the " Sounds of Silence " in the off season and into the preseasons.

    who said it did?🙄

You stated above here on the Cadets thread that "the Blue Devils in 2011 got a lot of armchair criticisms", so I'm not sure why you mentioned them, nor for what the intended purpose of yours with that BD comment here was. But the fact remains, that " armchair criticisms " of the Blue Devils is an annual occurance that takes place just about every season .... and yet  it seemingly has never effected their marchers, nor their staffers one iota the last 40 years.

If I remember correctly, BD was the one getting a lot of armchair criticism 2011, and more so out on the road on tour..hmmmm

     Oh Ya... the Blue Devils.

Now THIS is a Corps whose marchers, staffers,  turn into jelly the last 40 years whenever anonymous posters somewhere say something negative about them or their music or their show ( off season, in season, any season ). It effects their self esteem and confidence levels in a big way and typically shows up in their performances and scores the last 40 years.

.   I remember in 2011 the cadets that actually did a full musical run through of their show from I believe April camp weekend via live stream on the Internet.

      🙂

Yes... and the 2011 Cadets marchers confidence and self esteem was so shaken with that April showing by a few post exhibition nasty assessments/ comments on Social Media by a few anonymous posters, that they could only eventually muster a 98.35 score in winning their DCI Title later that August. Heck, if the anonymous posters kept their negative comments in April off of social media and to themselves alone, who knows, maybe the Cadets could have won their 2011 DCI title later that season with a 99 .35 score instead.

Point well taken.  But does this affect the judging and outcome of shows?  I would hope the judging community isn’t partaking in this sort of info and therefore prejudging the shows.

No. No need for concern. Judges are not " pre judging shows ", as none of the Corps have the Visuals, nor the Guard, ready. Besides, some Corps are fast out of the gate, others slow out of the gate, even the first couple of weeks of the season come June. What might be shown ( or not shown ) in any off season audio/ visuals from camp then we can be assured will have no effect whatsoever on the Corps scores once we are deep into the season, and especially when all the Corps busses finally roll into Indy for the DCI Championships come August.  Heck, DCI judges tune out fans assessments that are in actual attendance at Championships, let alone  pay any attention to what might anonymously be said about Corps or their shows by fans on Social Media several months back.

HIGHLY SUCCESSFUL WINE AND FOOD TASTING YESTERDAY!

The committee made up of alumni and friends exceeded budget and brought in more people than ever before in our 25+ year history of doing this event. High praise to them for making this happen!

Fun day. Also lots of non-drum corps people that came for fun and great wines that just wanted to support a great cause... Youth Education in the Arts.

     Good to learn !

Zero information - don’t understand the logic of the shroud of secrecy corps s have developed the past few offseasons

You're not the only one. Its not confined to just the Cadets either ( of course ). Its throughout DCI these days now. The DCI Corps are entitled to do such... and watch as the activity fails to grow as for approx. 40 weeks out of the 52 weeks of the year there is such secrecy in the activity now that it rivals the secrecy found  at Area 51 in the Nevada desert.  ...  DCI is seemingly not so much preparing students to work in the public sector in the public schools, or as performers out in public taking the good with the bad from audiences and the like... but as CIA operatives or similar, taking a secrecy oath to remain undercover, and hush for long stretches of time, as a future career field. (... haha). Ironically, on reddit today there is a thread on the WGI percussion these days now, written by a recent age out. its a funny criticism of the WGI Percussion. The kids that march WGI even get a kick out of it from reading the posts. So this notion that todays marchers in DCI or WGI are snowflakes with frail personalities that can't handle some anonymous criticisms or light hearted digs on occasion are acting ridiculous in that assessment of youth today doing DCI or WGI, imo. Heck we KNOW they laugh and chuckle at what is sometimes posted on social media.

Actually, it is germane to your remarks above.  Just because a song is played as an encore and not in the field show itself does not exempt the corps from satisfying copyright requirements before they can arrange and publish a performance on social media (granted, some encore pieces are public domain, but that's probably the exception more than the rule).

Insofar as " encore songs " are concerned, just about all the Top 12-16 or so Corps have their Signature Encore songs they've played so many times over the years, most of us know them by heart. Just about all of them are under no further licensing infringement challenges any longer, Eleran, as that has been settled by all these Corps with that issue long ago. Corps that intend to play NEW encore songs are of course under the gun to make sure such licensing is secured. However, the simple solution to that concern is to not play such NEW encore songs for fans. There is nothing to prevent Corps however from playing their signature songs, nor for the Percussion battery to be on video playing, and dozens of other things that would not come under the licensing issue concern, imo. These types of things have been done in the recent past by these Corps too, and without any issues. So the excuses for the absence of even THESE types of play at camp videos doesn't hold much water, imo.

in a lot of camp videos, these days you rarely hear show material because of licensing concerns

Yes.  I clearly acknowledged this above in my comments above on this thread too. I'd imagine most  DCP posters understood where I was not asking for such " show material " audio/ videos from Corps camps either in my remarks above. Thus, the concern over music " licensing "  ( a legit one in DC, imo )is really not germaine here to any of my remarks above.

This information is for everyone, I just don’t want to post a link to something not everyone may be interested in, especially in a thread where it doesn’t belong. It’s just brass instruction by Matt Harloff but it’s really cool to watch.

I've seen a lengthy video of Matt Harloff talking to us on a drive in his car to an early CC camp. Then he arrives at  CC's camp where he's a brass staffer there, and he talks there to his brass line campers. Its cool and all to hear him talk at length on the video. Its interesting, insightful, and informative, imo. But there is little to no brass playing on it from any of the youthful CC 's brass line marchers. There is just mostly him on that lengthy video...... talking..... to us fans, and to his  2019 CC brass line. Why not include the youth in that video ? Playing some encore songs ? Or practicing parts of songs in sections, and MH instructing that playing ? Or playing chromatic scales or other brass line playing fundamentals ?  The youth in that Harloff video are seen listening to him talk.... with no brass playing in it. Where is the Percussion line battery of CC ? The  adult staff and Mgt at CC believes that CC's Percussion line playing needs to be secretly protected in the off season until move in camps the end of May ? From what exactly ? ('not picking on CC here,  as most all the Corps are like this now in the off season. )

Thanks for the response - I appreciate it.  With all due respect, though, I would hope everyone involved in a performance-based activity (both performers and staff) are much more think-skinned and not as fragile as this.

I think the marchers for the most part ARE thick skinned and not ' fragile ".. its the Corps Directors and a few of their staffers that might be a little less thick skinned than most of their marchers are, imo.. But its not one Corps here. Just about all of them have developed a group think on this it looks like to me, and they all seem to be doing the same thing on this. I understand the copywrite/ licensing explanation for this total black out of info, as well the need to keep the theme/ show under wraps so they can handle the unveiling of it on their own terms when its ready. But there is nothing at all that prevents these Corps from playing encore songs, or lengthy practice chords, or watch staffers instruct a section's playing, or even the Battery playing.  Things like this. I've noticed of late a few Corps inching their way into divulging at least some of this via ever so brief sound videos from camp. So maybe we'll see a bit more of this, who knows. But total black outs of camps with no videos from these Corps is no way to grow an activity, imo. I think maybe they 're not interested in the growth of the activity. Thats possible.   But If they ARE  interested in the  growth of the activity, secrecy has never been a proven marketing tool to keep fans engaged, while simultaneously attempting to grow a fan base, Not in any other youth activity we can think of anyway. Even the college football intra squad spring football games are open to the public's video taking and disseminations, and TV, coverages and insights as to what is taking place on the recruiting front, personnel changes. etc and what not on full display,. Theres a plethora of off season info to keep fans engaged in just about all other youth activities, youth sports. Their college aged players are mostly 18-22 year old amateurs as well here too. I'd imagine their similarly aged football players are thick skinned too if they might fumble the ball in the preseason game or some such.  Nobody is paranoid like about it, nor    excessively protective of one's  purported frail sensitivities in these other youthful competition endeavors in the off season. I likewise give the marchers in Drum Corps WAY more credit to be able to easily shrug off any criticisms that might come their way in any quarters from anonymous people from a simple preseason video clip release. So I'm frankly not buying that angle from the adults on their adult imposed black out of audio/ video on all these  Corps camps/ practices in the off season.

How does this actually hurt the corps, though?  Honest question.  Seems like both of these points would be more of a minor annoyance than an actual detriment to a corps - for those in the corps that actually come on here, which they all say they don’t (or do they??).

I would think the benefit gained from these points would not outweigh alienating fan bases with the cone of silence.

    Again, honest question.

Well, since this is a Cadets thread, we can use them as an example here to possibly answer your question you posed for us, imo

In 2011, the Cadets in preseason in April( or May) allowed  free access via computers and cell phones to national Drum Corps fans of their 2011 show in an outdoors standstill performance in street clothes at their practice facility by Brass and Percussion. At least half the 2011 season's show was played in the standstill performance. Afterwards, there was critique here on DCP re. what was heard. Just like any post show discussion in season, there  was both both  positive and negative commentary and assessments of what was heard played by DCP'ers here.

What was the effect of the commentary ( particularly the negative comments ) upon the Corps, staffers, 2011 Cadets marchers ?

Apparently 2 possible answers... 1 ) None whatsoever and/ or 2 ) the few negative comments proved a boost to the Corps Marchers that draw upon negative commentary to make them motivated to demonstrate that these particular fans wrong with their negative assessments with it.

This can be the only 2 conclusions from allowing fans to this pre Memorial Day access to the standstill  practice performance of the 2011 season's show from the Cadets as the Cadets won themselves a DCI Title that season of 2011 with a 98+ score. There was no visible downside to the Cadets allowing their show music to be played to national Drum Corps fans in that pre Memorial Day outdoors standstill performance by the Cadets in 2011.  None. That said,  so there is no misunderstanding, I'm not suggesting that all these DCI Corps need to play their show music for fans prior to Memorial Day. Just that even if they DID decide to do this, there is no evidence that this creates any negative effect on marchers, nor negatively impacts these Corps hopes for that season, if thats what the question becomes, anyway.

In independant open class MBI lost their sound mid-show during prelims. They continued counting it out for about a minute and then they restarted from the beginning. From what I saw though it was the facilities system that had the flaw.  I have no idea how that effected the judging or what impact it had on the performers doing a restart after you have done half the show.

DCI Corps and its Judging Community have really not quite come to grips yet, imo, on how to judge Corps in competition performance where the Sound Engineering has a major hiccup... to the point that where the music playing ( or singing ) is severely compromised in its actual delivery to the judge's ( and audience ) ears. Where the solo, brass, or percussion playing sounds like pure crapp musically as a result of the sound engineering snafu.

Sometimes, maybe we've heard the refrain of late : ... " Well... live by electronics, die by electronics ". While I'm sympathetic to what this means, I'm not entirely sure this is currently the case. It sometimes seems more like ..." Well.. live by electronics,  and live again with electronics, even if it gets messed up ".  Its all new I suppose,. But the judges need to figure now what to do when the electronics underperforms in a major way from what was intended and designed , but came out poorly in a performance competition, and the performance sounded just awful from a music performance standpoint, as a result of the unexpected electronics failure in performance competition..

actually if a school self reports to the NCAA, which has no bearing on anything

Sure it does. I could give you  dozen examples of schools internally finding violations of NCAA rules, reported it to the NCAA, and the NCAA later imposing sanctions, financial penalties, and banning of future competition participation ( bowl games ) and so forth. The fact the schools themselves might have uncovered the rules breaking and self reported this to the NCAA did not insulate them from sanctions, although perhaps less severe than if uncovered by outsiders or reported to NCAA HQ by a rival school or whatnot.. Do you require my listing of numerous  self reported violations by schools to the NCAA of rules breaking that later resulted in sanctions, financial penalties... sometimes heavy... imposed on that school , despite the  schools self reporting ? Or would you prefer to self educate yourself more on it ?... or better yet,  just take my comments on it at face value as accurate and not requiring your follow up reply criticism of it as not being fact based, and thus in your view, an inaccurate observation ?

I recently read something by an individual (he claimed) from the 75 Muchacho's stating they knew there were corps trying to get them DQ'd for having over age members. If true, why would you march over age members?

If true, ( but doubt it ) stupidity then as a possible reason would come immediately to mind. That said, the numbers of Drum Corps knowingly or unknowingly utilizing overage nmarchers in Drum Corps in the 60's, 70's likely equals the numbers of Corps that did national travels to Shows and Championships in rented busses during that time frame. Any belief that only the 1975 Muchachos were utilizing an overage marcher or two in the 70's would be pretty naive, especially for those like you and me that were around at the time and know better. And the notion that in '75, DCI HQ did not privately suspect the frequent use of lots of Corps utilizing overage marchers in their midst probably equals the ridiculous claim  now that DCI Executive Director and BOD's had no suspicions that Corps the last decade have been  involved with  staffers with bad behaviors with marchers in their midst or with the hire/ retention of staffers that were once banned from school grounds by school boards. This thread is about the inconsistencies in how DCI has metered out penalties both on and off the field with its membership Corps oftentimes,. It seemingly depends too often mostly on rank and influence, imo. .There are replete examples of this over the years for the willing to observe and assess, and make up their own minds on this if so inclined, imo.
