  1. first things first, i wasnt able to access the link but i did figure out which 2 they were. i would go with the barrington, it has the thumb saddle and if you get into trumpet you'll learn that its used occasionally and you might regret not having it.

get the silver they look nicer...

all i can say is i hate blessing mouthpieces. i somehow came across a blessing 3c and hate it. i also have a bach 3b and 7c and a stork custom vacchiano 3c. that is my only real useful peace of info, blessing=bad mouthpiece IMO

the 3b and 3c are probably the most comfortable mouthpieces ive played on and i get a great tone from them.

    ^my mouthpiece^

in hs we had essential elements known started calling it the black book in our lower band classes and a blue book as we called it that was mainly scale variations and chorales in our highest band class.

i do own an arbans book but i got it after i knew how to play so im not sure how well it would help a beginner, also have clarke technical studies.

my opinion go to a local hs and ask the band director or if your next to a university email someone in their music department and ask if you can get contact info on their trumpet/brass instructor. that would be your best bet for a book.

when i was younger i liked the books that came with a cd you could play with and copy the rythyms but that was when i was still learning all that stuff

  2. i've never seen a topic starter get so offended by people not going off topic....

the entire time people were talking about BD's identity.. it is what happens on forums... some things pop out and tend to be discussed in more detail....

i wasnt that offended, it just got ridiculous. some people were obviously saying things to be mean and hurtful while some were delivering valid points. i didnt start the thread so people could just ream on a specific corps and it was quickly turning to that thread about violence in phantoms show that went sooooooo far off topic that people were questioning other peoples parenting. i didnt want that happening

  3. Heh, ask Sam about how it feels to lose a ring by the slimmest of margins.

If we use him as a case study then we can safely say that the 2008 Blue Devils will eventually get over it, but it won't happen quickly.

I think the truth of the matter lies somewhere in between whitedawn and Noname. The year after I graduated high school, my alma mater went undefeated throughout the entire season, only to finish second by the slimmest of margins at Grand Nationals. My sister was still in the band, as was a girl I had been dating off and on at the time and a whole slew of other close friends. I was in the building for the announcement of scores, never dreaming that things would shake out the way they did. My shock was nothing compared to the emotions I saw from those that had actually spent several months preparing for that one evening, only to have their expectations crushed in the end.

Intellectually, whitedawn is correct. Marching band competitions - a category that includes all DCI events - are highly subjective affairs. As a marching member you have the ability to control your performance, but you have no ability to control how that performance is scored by a handful of men and women in green shirts. You have no control over what you perform, which can have a huge effect on how your performance is scored, because that's entirely in the hands of the creative staff. You don't even have any control over the groups you compete against, because there is no defense played in drum corps. For all these reasons, it can be dangerous to invest yourself too heavily in competitive results, because as we saw in 2008 those results can change on a whim.

However, this is only half of the story. To stop at the intellectual level ignores the human experience of competing. The truth is that we have invested heavily in the results, in time, effort and emotion. And any time we invest we want to see that investment pay off. Witness the Blue Stars in 2008. They had no expectation of winning, and just making finals again was by itself a remarkable achievement competitively for this corps. By Saturday night, standing there for retreat they knew that they had put on a great performance. Everything they had control over was completed. But that didn't stop them from celebrating when it was announced that they had broken 90. Next to Phantom, no other corps' staff celebrated as wildly as did the Blue Stars'. Despite the intellectual fact that the score they received was not in their hands, the entire corps was visibly thrilled because their competitive expectations had been far exceeded.

The flip side of that is that the Blue Devils expectations were dashed in perhaps the cruelest possible fashion. Those expectations came not just from being the Blue Devils, a corps capable of winning it all in any season, but from the fact that they had been winning it all, finishing second just once over the entire summer. Going into Saturday night, just like my sister's band, I'm sure that most every member of the Blue Devils had an expectation that they would be rewarded for a season's worth of achievement. No question they put on a tremendous performance (and I'm still convinced that BD far outperformed Phantom that night), so there should have been no reason to expect that the results would not be the same as they had been on any other night that season. Instead, they not only finished second by the slimmest of possible margins but had to witness perhaps the loudest crowd response to a score announcement in the history of DCI.

Even as an alum, I was angry and bitter for a long time when it happened to my sister's band. That night I hopped the fence to be on the field and give whatever support I could to the kids I knew who were crushed. I can only imagine how the Blue Devils must have felt, having invested much more into their year than my top BOA band had done. What whitedawn is saying,a bout keeping this all in perspective, is absolutely correct. And eventually I hope that every member of the Blue Devils can reach that point. But here and now, just a few months after the fact, I refuse to hold it against any Blue Devil if they choose to be bitter or angry or hurt.

    win

  4. I think Crown is much more DCPs baby than Regiment.

Regiment, while not winning out right prior to 08, was always smoking hot. ALWAYS.

I think of the "purple team" with whom I was in competition when I started marching and what they are today and its amazing. Proof that you don't have to bribe a judge to go somewhere. You just have to be good and get better. Every year Crown has been better and they are being rewarded for it. Woot for them.

  5. BD-Love the old stuff... 2000s, not so much. Also, lead sops/trumpets

Cavies- Drill, good music to fit the drill, drill, weird bent bicycle marching, funny

Phantom- Music, loud, dark sound, classical

Cadets- Right foot, narration as of late, good horns and drill, just falling a little behind competitively.

crown- Frickin' amazing , mellophone line. Hornline good overall, marched a lotta contras last year. comin' up

Bluecoats- Drumline way outplaces the rest of the corps. Hornline still awesome, and very innovative, and very cool show concepts.

Santa Clara Vanguard- Tradition. Also, I seem to be the only one noticing this, but I LOVE their drill lately! I love it a lot! And of course.... CYMBAL LINE!!!!!

Blue Knights- Body movement... GE lacking

Boston- Hardcore. Friggin' hardcore! Also, good visual. (in my opinion)

Glassmen- Interesting show concepts. I tend to space out during their shows.

Madison- Sops/trumpets... latin... I hope they continue their ascension.

Spirit- Southern, loud, family, GET YOUR BUTTS BACK INTO FINALS

    That's all I got.

  6. madison- latin, loud in your face, crowd favorite

crown- emerging crowd favorite, plays creative shows that have never been done

bluecoats- likes to tell a story, amazing drums and solid horns, BLOOO!

cavaliers- less and less horns each year and more and more incredible drill. maybe new arranger will fix this

cadets- old school feel while continually pushing what is acceptable on the field (well what the crowd thinks at least)

phantom- deep dark classical sound, story telling has been a big thing for the past few years.

glassmen- different shows, more like a play on the field, not very loud hornline but still very good

blue knights- hard to get into for people, very dark almost twisted sound sometimes

blue stars- creating a new image for themselves, or at least i think they are

  7. madison- latin, loud in your face, crowd favorite

  8. If a few bad apples ruined the classiness for the entire corps, I think every single corps is classless. I don't use that same formula though.

Now here's something I don't understand. What have the Blue Devils done in the past few years that made so many people like them less and less? This is an honest question, I would like to know.

people are stupid thats why they arent liking them as much. i saw the show in san antonio and thought it was an interesting show and pretty #### entertaining (i didnt really like last year). for the people who didnt see bd live this summer, your going off what you saw on the dvd, or your just saying what your friends say, your opinion of the show means nothing. yes phantoms show looked amazing on the dvd compared to bd. that doesnt mean that live bd didnt look just as amazing. the dvd doesnt do a lot of justice for bd this year period. end of argument. what happend at retreat or supposedly happend at retreat with bd and the horn players in ATB is a stupid argument to make towards why they are or arent a classy organization because it probably wasnt only them.

blue devils are good, they know theyre good and they are used to winning. for them to loose only 2 shows in a year and one is finals, thats gotta be heartbreaking so leave them be.

finally i started this not to bash BD, but to just have people say what they think each corps is known for lately since its obvious a lot of their show designs are different than what theyve been known for in the past.

to mods if this continues to bash on BD i would like it to be shut down. thanks

  9. How many people don't go to championships because there is nothing for their non-drum corps spouses/family members to do? I would think that is a more important question for DCI to ask. Is this part of the reason for the higher attendance in 2007?

if their spouses dont enjoy drum coprs, then they failed!

but if your gonna be there a few days you might as well have the option to go do something else

  10. How were they "over-rated" when its what the judges see and think in comparison with other corps performance, sometimes back-to-back?

in san antonio they should not have made the night show. conspiracies arent my thing, but being it xmens "home show" might have put them into the night. i dont think the rest of the people in the alamodome saw the same show i did. but what do i know im paying to watch, not being paid to watch

  11. Uh...care to explain that one?

you know same show over and over...

jesus christ superstar, an original show about pirates, carmen, kashmir(last time i checked led zepplin was not latin (the same show over and over))

in reality they are pretty much far from the same show over and over. the closest thing would have been 95 and 96, but its no worse than scv doing phantom of the opera 88 and 89, or phantom doing spartacus 3times now. you still love their shows every year so get over the "same show" theory

but still even if it was the same show for 5yrs in a row, i dont think the many people would have a problem with it

  12. At 780,000 residents, Indianapolis is the 12th largest city in the United States.

As such, it's got some really great museums and other cultural locations. (Don't miss taking the kids to the Children's Museum, a place even adults will find interesting.)

but try not to take it in all in one year, you still have another decade of going to indy for finals. :whip:

  13. Sad. I kind of liked the morning/afternoon show divide.

me too only if the 4 corps that got to perfrom twice, i wanted to see twice

ok next question, if it hasnt already been asked, will there be a huge 4hour break so everyone can flood that helpless barbque place across the parking lot?

  14. what kind of shows do you associate with each corps this decade (starting from 2000-2008) do they each have their own niche; or do you think that there are some still trying to find that thing that defines their corps and the shows they do?

    example:

you think scouts, you think something latin, loud, and crowd friendly

phantom always a deep dark classical sound

but what do you think when you think crown, colts, blue stars? just a few that came to mind
