  1. I really admire the optimism of Scouts fans. But you need to realize that there is sometime wrong with the show design. You can blame slotting, performance order, judges or even the wind when the color guard is bad.......BTW there in no wind in the Alamodome or the Georgia Dome.

Musically the show doesn't work. The visual program program is vastly better than year but is not getting clean. The crowd response is always incredible for the Scouts, but if wonder if the ovations they receive are really for the show they just saw or a response to tradition and history

.BTW...... Do not thiink that this is an attack but more of a reality check. I have been a fan of the Madison Scouts for more than three decades! But all the red marks in the world are not going are to fix show design problems or hurt my feelings in any way.

  2. If every corps did a studio type recording with no audience, I would be all over that. I think it'd be great!

I think that would be boring. Can you imagine what would happen once the sound engineers got hold of the recording. We have enough Muzak already. I attended Northeast Louisiana University as a part of the band. Jay Bocook did his graduate work there and a lot of the arrangements for the band. We did the Jensen recordings that marching bands would use to select music for their shows. It had always been recorded in a band room with mics and mixing boards and it sounded really bland. Eventually it was decided to record the music outdoors and sometimes at festivals. The difference was amazing! Jensen had much greater sales from the recordings done with the more realistic sounds created in an authentic environment. So to me when a few fans make a little noise it's just part of the background that makes drum corps so unique.

Of course the idiots screaming during the quiet opening of Cavies 1990 show made me want to punch them in the mouth. LOL

  3. I have no affliation with any corps, just "In the Stands". Please do not discredit my valid question with the sour grapes cop out.

Ok then.... you accuse Michael of bias but give no specific examples. You mention that you believe that he has a lack of qualifications to have his position with DCI.org. What credentials do you think someone should have? And what are yours? I have seen some pretty heated arguments on these forums, but I am not used to seeing this kind of personal attack.

BTW my comment about being involved in drum corps for all these years was in no way a diss to you and I am sorry if it came off that way. When you say "sour grapes" I have no idea what you talking about. I won't respond to any more of your comments because there is something going on here that is very odd and completely distasteful.

Of The 35 years I mentioned only 3 were as a corps member the rest were just " In the stands".

  4. My point is that this is the exact type of crap that these Crown honks spout out. They put down BD or defend booing under the guise of "I am blaming the staff, not the kids, so it is ok to be an ######## and if anyone gets angry at that or points out I'm being disingenuous then they are wrong, not me!"

Why are you accusing the "Crown Honks" as you use the term of being the one'e putting down Blue Devils. There are a lot people that dont like the direction that Blue Devils have gone the last few years. And the simple fact is that BD visual program is not nearly as demanding as their top tier competitors nor is it as demanding as their own shows from the past.. This is not to say that show is enjoyable. It is! And as far the booing..... Booing was occuring decades before the BD's furniture shows. The first show I ever went to 1978.... people in stands booed when Scouts beat Bridgmen.

Sometimes a boo or hiss just comes out..it is just part of human nature for better or worse. .. I still always applaud at the end of a corps show even I didnt like it.... I am applauding the work and dedication the kids put worth. If something makes me angry I bring it you good people on DCP forums.

  5. I've been following drum corps (DCI) for 15 years and love the activity. I am concerned that DCI perpetuates a bias when they sanction Michael Boo's blog. Personally, I find it helpful when I am not at a show. However, Boo's blog is one man's opinion -- the only man's opinion that runs on the DCI website. To the extent that Boo writes negative or positive commentary, DCI approves it. We are told that Boo marched Cavaliers for 3 years and has two degrees in music. Does that qualify him to comment authoriatively on the visual aspects? At very least, DCI should sanction a second blog by someone with visual expertise. In fairness to all corps, I think DCI should drop the blog on its website.

I am really surprised the hear you say these kind of things. Most of the things Michael Boo does for DCI.org are scores analysis...... like recap and movements within standings. He is just as free as you or I to voice his opinion about what he believes and those opinions are usually in the forums section of DCP.

Where do see bias in anything he points out? I have never seen it. I am wondering why you brought this up in the first place. I have a feeling you might be unhappy with a corps you like getting bad visual scores recently.

BTW. I have been involved in Drum Corps about 35 years.

  6. 1984 Garfield Cadets. One of Mr. Zingali's greatest masterpieces. He has so many, but this is the one that I think made every other corps realize that the old ways of thinking about visual were gone. My personal favorite is Star 1990, because the end of that show was so intense and each impact point was more than the one that came before. It contains my all time favorite company front as well.

  7. Performance order and home show. Frankly, I wouldn't have been surprised if Crown had won. It was set up nicely for them.

I am not sure if I buy the home show thing. Otherwise the Madison Scouts would have a whole bunch more titles. Yes I know that finals is not really a home show, but you see a lot of locals some of which you wouldn't normally see at a championship. There is something to said for performance order but I think it is given way to much blame particularly by Scouts fans..... I have not really heard as much about it from Crossmen backers.... ... .I heard it more frequently this season than usual... or course maybe I am just noticing it more. Been stuck at home recovering from foot surgery... and DCP and FN are the only things that have kept me sane these last few weeks.

  8. This makes me miss the Astrodome. It hasn't been torn down, but I think they have plans to tare it down. :unhappy:

I miss the Astrodome too. It still stands but it is such neglect that it is actually too unsafe to hold events of any kind. The worse past is that it is still not even paid off.. It became a victim of professional sports teams owner/ extortionist. They want the pretty new stadium with all the nicest sky-boxes and if they don't get it they threaten to move the team. And of course want all of this paid for by taxpayers.

Can you tell I am still P.Off at Bud Adams? LoL and good riddance.

  9. I think the worst thing about the Opening Ceremony was NBC's horrific coverage. The commentary by Meredith Vieira and Matt Lauer was terrible and completely unnecessary. People on DCP raid on Devils and other corps for covering music with narration, but this was FAR worse. They could have (and should have) simply used text in a lower third to identify performer and source material. Even Bob Costas was embarrassing during the Parade of Nations. I've never heard more ignorance and culturally insulting comments from a usually otherwise excellent broadcaster. At least we know what network to avoid for information on world politics and affairs.

But by far the most egregious move was when they edited out the 7/7 tribute to air a Ryan Seacrest softball interview with Michael Phelps, who clearly didn't even want to be there.

Matt and Meredith should stick to 8 minutes cooking segments on morning talk shows. Bob Costas is always an embarrassment. He seems to think the Olympics are where you go to play basketball and nothing else. Maybe 2 Americans were even mentioned who were not NBA players. Those guys already get more than fame and fortune than they are entitled to. Even worse was when some of the smaller nations came in He would say " never won a medal". He has no understanding of what the Olympics mean to athletes competing in the less profitable or popular sports.

  10. I will go ahead and LOL this in advance so that no one will call me a hater. It's just a joke..... I love the Blue Devils this year.

I miss the way all of the Olmypic athletes used to march into the stadium in step. Now they just kind of scatter in without any formation at all. Who do they think they are....the Blue Devils?

  11. It is DEFINITELY dangerous to stop a show in mid motion. DEFINITELY. That isn't really a debatable issue. This is one of the reasons staff are so insistent that members stop exactly when they are supposed to and not go on, because at these tempos, if only a few members don't catch that they are stopping, there WILL be collisions. Seen it happen a million times, and it can lead disastrous consequences.

The fact is that no matter how well a corps is trained, the odds of all 150 members stopping at exactly the same time mid show are very low.

    [/quo

Who said anything about 150 MEMBERS STOPPING AT THE SAME TIME? You did not get that from my post so please don't use that on me.

Yes people are moving in every conceivable direction at very high tempos but there are judges, staff, DMs all on the sidelines who are able to make a determination when and if a show has to be stopped due to injury or weather.

Can you just imagine how a trial lawyer could use something like that to make a case regarding a serious injury or worse.

  12. I don't understand how people are coming here with the idea that it could be more dangerous to stop a show during the middle of a performance than to let the corps finish..... HUH? Corps staff stop run throughs every day of the week and believe or not performing members do actually look at the DMs. When someone goes down during a performance and is unable to get back up every effort should be made the get them out of the way or to get assistance to them. There could have been something far worse than a twisted ankle or sprain. This is not football where a really long play rarely exceeds a few seconds. Last night during Academy's show we saw the way guard equipment was being blown yards away from it's release point. That show should have been stopped.

I noticed that video is not on the Fan Network today. I wonder why.

  13. well... DCI is the one that signed a 10 year deal with a stadium with no schools to stay at.

Not to mention a new stadium that wasn't even finished. School districts change their start dates more and more often so a 10 year stadium contract doesn't make sense anywhere. But back on topic. If in the unlikely event that DCI takes regional touring into consideration I hope that they listen to the directors of some of the smaller or lower placing corps directors instead of just the big guys. Those are the corps that the current system is most negatively impacting.

  14. George Zingali's famous Z-pull by the 1983's Garfield Cadets deserves to be included, but many list the 1980 27th Lancers as groundbreaking, calling it George Zingali's first masterpiece, though some who marched with 27th will point to its 1979 predecessor as the one that changed drum corps.

George Zingali created enough masterpieces to fill a gallery. Is there a compilation of his greatest moments out there?

  15. I think you may be right. As of right now, we could see as many as 5 corps fighting for that last couple of spots in Finals (Blue Knights, Blue Stars, Crossmen, Glassmen, Academy)

My heart is telling me Crossmen, but my head is saying Blue Stars. I'll be watching from the FN and may have to leave the room when the announcer gets up around 14th.

  16. Well, Hop and some of his fellow corps directors only have themselves to blame. The regional touring model was the easiest way to keep more corps healthier for longer and only the most financially capable continued on to the DCI half of tour. Shame, but they have created the monster. I can remember playing in front of sell-out crowds in no-name little towns in Wisconsin and Illinois on the DCM tour. Now you have to travel 5 and 6 (or more) hours between shows.

Your post to this topic reflect my feelings exactly. How many more corps do we have to play taps for before someone realizes that the current touring model is broken.

  17. You are not alone. This is typically were there is more exciting volatility in placement shifts many times come late in the season. There could be a Corps or two that might make multiple placement moves now in this Corps ranking range. I could see this happening, now that I think more about the Corps in this current ranking range.

This year might be another in which there are as many people watching the battle for 12th as there is watching the battle for the Championship.

  18. My bets are on Boston, Vanguard and maybe Crossmen. It was about this time last year when Boston kicked in the after burners and made a move. SCV has what IMO is the best product they have had in a decade. They have really impressed me with the way they have cleaned a very exposed drill. I have never been the biggest Crossmen fan, but they have completely converted me this year. I find myself constantly humming their show.

I think we are going to see some unexpected movement in the standings at Atlanta.

Boston passes Scouts and Cavies and stays ahead.

    Vanguard catches Cadets

    Crossmen goes past Blue Stars.

  19. I disagree...you are looking at a model of how things were, not how things are and will be. The focus on scholastic musicians as members and audience ensures a never-ending supply of fans every year. As older fans fade away from attending, there is a constant stream of new fans taking their place. Some will stick, of course, and some will move on after their school careers are over. The key is the renewable source of people by focussing on scholastic kids as the primary audience/members.

The flame will not go out in such a world...like the Olympic torch being passed along the route, the drum corps flame gets passed on to each subsequent generation.

I sincerely hope you are right. But we need to be aware that the scholastic musicians you refer to may become an even more limited group from which to draw members and fans. I see no let up in the budget cuts being made to music and art programs around the country. These are the very programs from which the constant stream of new fans is expected to come. I hope that this is a trend that can be reversed, but the political and economic climate that has brought about these cuts seems to be getting worse and not better.

  20. The rubber will hit the road however in about another decade. The test will be whether or not the marchers of today remain devoted fans of the activity and will become financial contributors to the activity... volunteer to the activity, support it with their time, energy and dollars. Will they return to march a reunion Coops 25 years from now to show the younger audiences of 2035 what their ene tertaining group did for the fans in 2012 by making them throw babies and go wild with delight in 2012 ? If they value and cherish the activity as previous generations have that have passed the torch to them, it will survive. If they walk away from Drum Corps after marching a year or a few, and consider it a summer's excursion and the torch passed to them has the flame go out, then Drum Corps will die. I don't think its any more complicated than this, Mike.

I hope they will. Maybe our children will pile their kids into the family hovercraft and head to a stadium and watch a drumcorps show. Maybe even Santa Clara playing selections from The Planets....... Jupiter, Mars, Seti Alpha 6 and Gideon 4..... the old and new planets all included.
