  1. That's good information, Gary. Has it always been this way, or was there a little more wiggle on this in the 90's and before all the recording and so forth? And what's the cutoff? Can a brass ensemble play a chart at I&E without sweating the royalty/public performance thing? The "Mini Corps as a property/DCA as a producer" thing is important to the conversation.

as you state (as well as others above),..........minis are required to provide all insurance, music rights, etc, just like the competing and alumni corps on the field,..........for reasons that allow DCA to record and produce audio and video recordings as part of the offerings,...........which is unlike all other I&E compeditors,........with no royalties or even disclosure on the sales (no that there would be much, if anything) the mini corps basically agree to sign their rights away to others.......for that reason alone mini corps should be given a more attension in terms of adjudication,...........sour grapes? I don't see it that way,......more like black sheep,........

  2. When the trophy was bragging rights, or a beer stein with a strip of masking tape on it with "World Champion" scribbled in sharpie, it seemed to bring out the best in everyone....like one of those backyard Cups you play for on Thanksgiving before everyone sits down together.

(and make bank on this: Donna wouldnt mind if it was a beer stein with masking tape; that would have been the whole point)

  3. When Erie scored 105, everyone cracked up, congratulated their fellow corps members and "competitors" for turning the place on, raised their glasses and partied til about 3. There was a time - not too long ago - when the winners were announced to a near empty hall as 2,500 people had gotten up and left after the last performance. They were out of their chairs to begin with (standing o), so they took the next logical step...to the party. Even the performers left the building. You'd hear them an hour later with a beer in their hand asking, "how'd we do, anyway?"

Who we doing this for anyway? Was it more fun when it didnt matter so much?

Its a gift that DCA figured this Mini Corps thing out in the first place. There is NO OTHER PLACE IN ALL OF DRUM CORPS that 18 horn outfits can get top billing, a "must see" mystique, draw a huge audience and have them throwing babies at the end. NOWHERE.

Comparing where we were to where we are.....looking at this thread...did the pendulum swing a little far? where's the fun? and where's the focus? look how seriously we are taking ourselves....show design deficiencies compared to the other corps? Really?

It's I&E. All the groups and individuals....snare, ensemble, flag, chorus get one thing when they leave...a sheet...with about three comments on it and a score. Mini corps are a shade bigger than the brass ensembles (who get one of those sheets, 3 comments and a score). And everyone's having a ball. Maybe less is more.

It might be time to have the winner of Mini Corps by applause meter and chuck the sheets (and tapes) altogether.

Come to think of it, that might work. (and it would STILL be a contest  )

    Stay tuned.

  4. Before it turns into a Frankenstein, mini-corps needs this review to make sure Donna's mission isnt getting lost in translation.

I would not object to that at all. The sheets are presently close to the music effect sheets that DCA uses anyway. There is only ONE LINE on the sheet in a subcaption that says "Visual Enhancement" ...it supposed to only give credit if the visual content helps to generate music effect.

IMHO, We may have gotten a little out of hand with as much movement as the top corps are doing. I am not even sure that the competitors or the judges understand the sheets. I had a lot to do with writing the existing sheet, wrote a show to fit the sheets and still only came in 3rd place.

Dont get me wrong here...I understand that judging apples, oranges, bananas, pears, melons, et al...is not an easy task. But are we making it harder for judges with the addition of as much drill as we are doing. The Ghost Riders cannot keep up with the Jones's in this regard. We have some people that just can't do that much movement because of age or health reasons. Should we cut people because they cant do drill?

I am hoping for some communication with DCA this winter on how to go about doing some things that will not cause mini corps from getting out of the competition. We only had seven corps by the time the show went off. I spoke with a person of interest from a steady competitor that said the group he is from may not return next year.

No sour grapes here at all...but where are the Erie Thunderbirds, Golden Eagles, Lambertville Volunteers, Matadors/Generations etc...did we make it so they couldnt compete with their existing personnel? FWIW...with the Ghost Riders, what you see is what you get. I am not sure that we can get much better than we were on Friday night. I am proud of that for sure!

  5. I LITERALLY BOWED AT YOUR FEET AND IT STILL WASNT ENOUGH!!!!!

we minions are mere drones marching off the Apple 1984 cliff to the beat of the Westshore echo.

how did I shred your dignity? Save the drama.

When people call you out and don't acknowledge it, you want them to answer...I've seen it. so I returned in kind.

as for people in 97 and 98...we had people go to Bucs yes. Also Cabs, Bush, Grennies, several stayed trying to keep Westshore afloat and many just gave up.

  6. Bow to Jeff.

not enough to make the point and have a few supporters to cement it; gotta shred the other guy's dignity in the process.

Actually Re-posts to get a bow.

    Talk about silliness....

    OK. Here ya go. :worthy:

    "proved to be bunk"...

20 members and a few staff people is not a wholesale absorbing. Makes no difference to add twenty people? That doesnt bring a few old vets back into the fold with some fresh enthusiasm? And new people in 97-98 had one local choice...Bucs...so there they went, too. Let's say the Bucs didnt get hurt by the whole thing. Fran agreed with you. Big W did too. That wasnt enough apparently.

Did you really repost looking for this affirmation? I almost fell over reading it.

    Here:

    :worthy::worthy::worthy::worthy::worthy::worthy::worthy:

    Hope that was enough.

As far as compensation, just because it was raining where you were didnt mean it was raining everywhere.

just quoting this since the person making the claim i proved to be bunk did not ackowledge

  7. I overscored KS and Renegades and came within a few tenths on several.

If you got it THAT right, I think you win the pool.

How much was in it? Just my 10 bucks???

i can mail you the check....or we can go double or nothing on 2013 :)

Flip C2 with Kidsgrove in Open and Govies with Gold in Class A and I had it right! Probably the closest I have ever been

  8. The post reads "outside their radius in a complementary situation" which, cleary, Mass is NOT (a complementary situation). Everyone goes there, like they do Scranton. There is no give and take, or reciprocation which is the point (often missed here on DCP as threads get pulled apart for every piece of syntax rather than for their merit or as a means to generate dialogue). Thank you for pointing it out a second time, though the post addressed that ahead of time.

I know it was mentioned earlier but traveling to Massachusetts every year should be considered outside their radius.

Personally, I would like to see them stop hosting the Kiwanis show in August and do something different that day. That show is probably the worst on the schedule honestly. Then again, it's not like there are other shows going on that day anyway.

I would love to see them travel down south once a year.

  9. Rule book: The top 10 scoring corps from Open Class prelims advance to Open Class Finals. At this point, there are 9 SCORING corps.

The pass to Finals, at this point, is for the corps that didnt make a score. Bucs, Cabs and MBI.

Seeds or no seeds, by rule, you have to make a score to make finals.

Of course, Cabs, MBI and Bucs get a pass to Finals...that just makes sense. We have enough season long information to make that determination and can do so comfortably.

BUT THE 9 HIGHEST SCORING CORPS should certainly be "in". They went to Prelims. They made a score. It rated in the top 10 of corps at Prelims. Bonus for Kilts and Bush...and a valid enough reason to make it "valid".

    Send them through.

  10. Absorbing the Westshoremen 15/16 years ago didnt hurt, either.

Not to bust up your point, but they actually "hauled ### all over the world" in 97, 98, 99, compared to 94, 95 or 96 (source: corpsreps.com, fromthepressbox.com). A full schedule versus 5 or 7 shows.

And they didnt exactly go on the cheap for the staff.

I'm not sure they got smart as much as they were in the right place at the right time and made the most of it. Credit for that.

Again....regardless....I am going to win the pool. I am in for $10.

    Joe Caballero

Bucs were almost dead 15/16 years ago, and got smart. They didn't haul ### all over the world, stayed more local, got in better financial shape, grew on the field as well, and look...the results speak for themselves. They did it without bingo advantages thatused to be available in NY, they didn't charge $1400 for their members to join, they didn't pay for vans to haul people to rehearsals.

seems to have worked out well

  11. Bottom line (and i do "get it"...i've described it in pretty good detail) is that, without reciprocation, Empire is in a tough spot. Its not a "new" spot by any means....Renegades, MBI, CV, et al have been in that "spot" for years. The part I'm having trouble with is that it is not a wholly necessary spot, at least as it relates to them, if only there was some reciprocation.

Like you said, there'd have to be a pretty compelling reason to engage in that conversation/course of action. I'm not sure its (a) compelling enough or (b) been discussed to the point of reaching that conclusion.

Re: better placing corps. I assume you mean MBI. They are the only one to ever turn the trick.

Good talk, though. I'd share my thoughts at DCA level if i thought it would do any good. I imagine this isnt anything that is really an eye-opener that someone hasnt come up with b4 me.

    Joe Caballero

It is what it is, Joe. Them's the reality. It can be dealt with. Looking at recent placements at championships, less/easier travel doesn't equate to a better placing corps. Not at all.
