  1. Rules to schedule your I & E time:

    1. If it has the words "Kidsgrove" and "baritone" attached to it, it is a must see. As it happens, Amy, Guy and Chris are conveniently going on back-to-back-to back

    2. Timmy and Donny Allen back to back versus the brass ensembles is a coin toss; as is Scooter on mello versus Heavy Metal Brass.

    3. Do NOT miss Govies chorus. Do NOT miss Govies chorus. Do NOT miss Govies chorus.

    4. I'm thinking Star's membrane will be ridiculous, so that should be written in ink.

    5. Watch at least THREE types of "i" or "e" that you havent stopped to see in a while.

    6. Save time to get some grub and a good seat for mini corps at 745...and expect something with a different venue-flavor than the past several years

  2. could one of my fellow fans PLEASE record Robbie Robinson on snare individuals and post on YouTube??

He's on at 6:40pm in the snare venue.

If you record it and remember this note, PLEASE post a link here or send it to me on a PM

    THANK YOU!

    Go get 'em, RR.

PS DALE is doing individuals, too?!?! WISH I WAS GOING !!! GRRRRRR!

  3. Glad someone said it. Throwing the towel and "last week was my DCA" really aint ES kinda talk. Been doing the "drum corps to the masses" since the FIRST DAY IN 1983 and every winter show, Santa at the Mall, ICA parade, Bermuda, Rio, England, Curley Shuffle, Yankee Doodle day since, so that part isnt somehow 2012-unique.

Rein in the "its ok to be 6th" talk and get after it. Your corps members and your competitors deserve your best effort. And saying "we're 7th, but we arent really trying" is an insult to your competitors and ES alums. There's no need to speak for the whole corps or feel sorry for anyone else when you, personally, might not be on the same page. If your Final was in Indy, kindly stand aside and make a hole for someone who is ready to compete.

DCA is alive and well and doesnt need to hear it from the DCI crowd to make it so.

    Thank you.

    Just for the record...

Empire went on for a full show in DCI 1995 in Buffalo, thereby exposing DCA to a full house DCI audience. Westshoremen did the same thing the next year, and Brigs a couple of times as well since then.

I am so glad that you enjoyed DCI, but I never marched in an Empire corps that wasn't trying to WIN DCA!!!! As a proud alum, I find your comments very disturbing. We did all of the same stuff but we also competed to win.

  4. And we waited A WEEK to get the scores from the week before with our very own, freshly minted copy of Drum Corps World!!!

And of course.... it being the pre-Internet era.... all summer there were all kinds of rumors about which corps might be there. "I heard there's this new corps from Canada"... "Someone told me there's a Midwestern corps that's heading East this year"... etc., etc. Fun stuff.

  5. Its sooo OLD SCHOOL!

Back in the day, we didnt get a clear picture of the DCI corps until everyone FINALLY got together.

It wasnt til DCI East, DCI Canada or Whitewater that 27th and Bridgemen got on the same field with Blue Devils, Regiment and SCV. We talked "West Coast inflation" and that sort of thing and it only got settled in one place: on the field.

It was late in the season before speculation turned into real conversation, and the unknowns were a good reason to buy a ticket.

DCA has that "thing" here in 2012.

CorpsVets, Renegades, Scouts, Tampa and MBI = Who the heck knows?

Anyone want to talk about "slotting" this year? You cant!

Fact is: Renegades HAVE shown up to DCA in the past, with a bunch of hype, and backed it up (e.g.they've WON HORNS at Prelims).

MBI is the defending Champ...and drums never seem to get that attention as a force til its time to pass out the hardware.

Empire between 4th and 7th? Or not?

Hurcs on the Cabs heels with a really great show...Could you reasonably call them as high as 2nd; and with a few more "close the gap" ingredients see them chasing the Championship? I can.

Kidsgrove and Tampa with very little for us to go on, but bringing nearly full corps?

CV with a chip on their shoulder at being counted out a little and ready to bring it strong (I'd LOVE to be the person delivering the parking lot speech before prelims!)

Midwest, West, South, East and International.

This is fun. Prelims will be fun.

  6. So much for my comment above.

A "bias" is different than taking information at face value and drawing a reasonable conclusion. A "bias" is taking information and, regardless of its value, reaching an unreasonable conclusion. Labeling someone "biased" is a dismissal of their thoughts. And its pretty rude.

Bridgeport sure offered some insight on content, if not performance. Not much has changed in placements, etc and the keen drum corps eye could certainly draw "reasonable conclusions" from Bridgeport. Especially eyes with many years' dca experience who have seen shows and seasons develop. Vince Bruni used to say "you cant polish a bomb"...and understood pretty quickly what a bomb looked like...usually in June :)

Defeating another's opinion with rhetorical questions is that passive-aggressive thing that goes on too often on the dci forums. Trying to prove someone's opinion "wrong" as the first order of business is a great way to end conversation. Just ask my ex-wife.

Offer new thoughts, be bold, be frank. That's what makes it fun.

I might not "agree", for example, with Fred's opinion across the board...but i sure respect his courage in offering it (wow, Fred!), and respect him enough as a member of this community not to try to defeat him or question his credentials as if he had no business sharing his thoughts in the first place.

If a conversation has a winner and a loser, then someone goes home with their nose bent and it isnt the best basis for the next conversation. Hard to develop friendships that way.

Debate isnt about "winning"; leave that up to the corps. They'll let us know, at the end, who was "right".

    Think happy thoughts.

whens the last time you saw them? Bridgeport, maybe? How can you say that bolded statement when you have not seen them.

I usually respect what you have to say but your bias has really showed lately.

  7. TOTALLY enjoying participating in this thread.

What a DIFFERENCE from the DCI forum!

the opinions are STRONG (without a doubt!) and mince few words, yet there isnt the "oh, yeah? I disagree so you are wrong and you suck!" thing going on.

I guess when the audience is primarily over 25, there is a difference in the way things are discussed.

If its good...we say so; if it has "opportunities to improve", we say so. there seems to be a healthy respect for each other here.

    Thank u for that.

  8. Please refer to my notes about your "retirement" posted last year (and the year before).

And you are off to England? Please send along a copy of your "retirement" brochure.

Would love to see The Company join Kidsgrove Scouts on tour... I can't wait to see them in September in their championships... Kidsgrove is better than 2010 so they must be amazing... off soon to help Kidsgrove with their tour... see everyone in Bridgeport, Pennsauken and Annapolis...

  9. Not dumping on your post, Gary, but $2500 would be a serious (prohibitive) commitment. $500 - $700 would get you past the door. A nominal cost that could be borne by a sponsor, benefactor or donator (or two) would at least have a snowballs chance. Limiting it to Open Class, in this case, wouldnt be unreasonable nor unexpected. (No disrespect to the Class A groups)

    2 open class corps @ 150 = 300

    2 Class A corps @ 85 = 170

That's 470 more medals. call it 500.......even at $5.00 each, that is $2500.00,(which is probably way high),.........that is about $100.00 or so per corps entering prelims,........not really a huge price to pay,...........I like the idea a lot!

  10. Purely worth starting this thread just to see that photo.

I'm with Tom here, I would think Red is the one that would know for sure...

When I got a Silver Medallion in 81 (and the two Gold Medallions in 82 and 83) I don't remember the Sunrisers Corps members also getting them. (I might be wrong) I think it was just the DMs and Gold, Silver and Bronze Medallions were awarded.

    1981 DCA.

  11. The Hurcs score on Sunday was no accident.... (a 4/3 split decision for the 7 on the panel

Cadets2 might sound like a different corps in 2 weeks...and at Finals they FINALLY get to go on mid-show.

Calling Statesmen 6th or 7th? Can only say wow to that.

The Florida clan might have something to say about that 10th spot (Even if its a one-shot deal to make it so) For the record: i'm guessing TBT is the youngest dca open corps by a country mile...but they have a TON of people and interest and 2013 might be their coming out party. England?

The Company, K-Scouts and Thunder in the same show would be a hoot.

Attention JN and company: please dust off Florida Suite (especially the '85 closer)for next year. It will save you a lot of off-season decision making time and trouble. If not that, Coconut Champagne is a reasonable compromise.

  12. Cut it out, Keith  ....not suggesting ye famed Little League participation ribbons ....drawing the line at top 3

...and you didnt answer my note.... you coming to Nease in October??????

(PS for the DCP crowd...Keith was MY instructor when I was 15! So we can take a poll....

    Keith Hall is (a) old; (b) "old-ish";

EVERYONE'S a winner!!!! Give them all medals!!!!

  13. A little post-London fever here....seeing the expression of achievement that goes with a 'spot on the podium' made me think of this....

Hi Joey, DCA has already cut the "hardware" costs considerably and even for the "side" awards uses much less expensive (and less bulky) plaques...

I'm not sure myself, that I would be in favor of silver and bronze medals... they are NOT inexpensive... so I tend to always err on the side of fiscal conservatism as the net profit is almost totally turned over to the corps through the point share system... these corps have actually come to rely on this money... So, while it's a nice idea... I think the directors would rather keep those funds in the kitty so to speak for distribution annually.

  14. Is it time to expand the trophy order to include Silver and Bronze medals at dca?

Top 3 DCA is a strong achievement ..even if its a faux color on the end of a red ribbon...

Anything wrong with adding a member "extra" to:

    (a) commemorate a run at the title,

    (b) dangle a piece of hardware to shoot for;

© not cost too much to add to the list of member takeaways,

    (d) represent excellence

And i'm talking about a real, tangible, one for each member, touch-it-with-your-hands, hang it on your neck medal.

Hand out the Gold to the Champ on the field at Finals retreat..like we've done. Photos and so forth with the red ribbon showing on the winners only. They earned that exclusivity.

Give the Silvers and Bronze, one per member, as they pass in review at Finals; before the Champion's encore.

Just a thought. Input? (and yes I used Starting Line....its a figure of speech)

  15. This kind of commentary comes up consistently. Fusion's brass is no longer becoming a dca mainstay....it is one.

One can't say enough about this horn line. It's well schooled, arranged very well for and uses a lot of timbres and tonalities, which can be a very scary thing for a smaller horn ensemble to do, and they're also presented well by the visual package, which does get them into some pretty daring field spreads at times. The 29 horns pack a lot of power, musicality, and skill into their small size, much to their credit. Their soloists are extremely good and worthy, they still have some more room to shape and include more nuance, but the foundation is good and firm. They're not afraid to play hard and at the audience with no apologies. The crowd noticed, and respected that greatly.

GE tape on steroids...and was a real good read front to back...sincere appreciation and kudos to a vet who took the time to create and share. Awesome.

And thumb down to me for interrupting it b4 you were done !

  16. 1990 in Buffalo, big (and enthusiastic) crowd for A/A60 Finals...Railmen were the highlight imho.

It might not be a "big" draw, but if Cavaliers can draw 400 for a REHEARSAL in Orlando on a weeknight, surely a championship can draw more than 600....especially one featuring four of the top 25 corps.

It isnt the venue....its the day of the week.

Saturday PRELIMS/FINALS AM/PM...weekend just prior to DCI week...call it an extended DCI week....Saturday to Saturday....and we'll think up a few more Monday/Tuesday performance opportunities for some or all of the corps.

I will grant you that DCI did an EXTENSIVE D2 tour in years' past, with 10-15 corps per contest, that fairly stated, did not draw. But we are talking about one contest. And its a big one: DCI Finals.

My earlier post/suggestion of having the Open Corps do an East Coast Championship combined with the DCA corps (AL Nationals for both?) didnt get much traction (for obvious reasons already debated on DCP)....but the top DCA corps are a big draw at their traditional venues and the Open Corps would certainly add an overflow/sellout atmosphere to the equation.

Open Class, regardless of where it is, will never be a great draw. It wasn't in the 80's and it isn't now. Most fans just don't care and won't attend even if it's across the street from their hotel.

One thought: adding WC's to the slate as special guests; but that kinda defeats the point. Why outshine your champion on championship night?

Another thought: having the Open Prelims/Finals as an add-on freebie to the WC ticket packages might get a few more fannies in the seats...then again, it's hard to have a lot of enthusiasm if you dont have any skin in the game...."yay...I'm here, but just because it was free"....however.....

Final thought for comparison: MINI CORPS at DCA IS a freebie and it is a standing room only happening that fills the convention center to the rafters. Free doesnt mean "lame"...Mini Corps is a riot.

it costs DCA for the venue etc, but there must be an ROI in there somewhere, or they wouldnt do it.

Is there an idea here? Could the I&E winners be part of the night's festivities? performing in the concourse, for example? could there be a YEA type workshop as part of the day's activities with comps to the local bands for that event?

This is a tough conversation....25 years worth of ideas and discussion havent made a dent. And i'm not so self absorbed to believe these ideas havent been brought up somewhere before.
