  1. On our way to Drums Along the Rockies....chugging uphill.

My seat was right up front, so I could hear the radio chatter. A semi passes Big Blue (our semi) and asks "What the hell is a Blue Devil?"

To which one of our other drivers replies "It's a gay gospel group!"

A nice laugh at the time!

Sam I recall this the same year the 04 lost its transmission in Colorado. and out of fear of the bus dying before getting to the school destination the other buses were used to block an intersection so the 04 didn't have to stop and have the engine stall.

  2. My Father told me there was an Italian POW camp at 1st street in Bayonne....although probably not a fun place to be, the Italian folks from the area were allowed to bring pasta, meatballs and sausage, and homemade vino to the boys on Sundays!!!

There was a German PoW camp near Frankenmuth, Michigan in the city museum they have some info on the camp. One story they tell is that one of the PoW's brother lived in the Carolinas who had immigrated years before. The brother came to see him and government officials were willing to let the PoW go home with his brother. But the brother who had immigrated wouldn't do it because he believed it was unfair to the other PoWs.

In 1943 after Italy surrendered to the Allies, Italian PoWs were used as work crews to build bases in the Pacific against the Japanese.

  3. When I was on active duty with the Air Force I had to do some research into the internment camps and POW camps during WW II.

The Army History Office at Carlisle Barracks, Carlisle, PA has a collection of documents relating to this area. The Army was responsible during WWII for operating the camps.

In my research I was able to get copies of Italian PoW documents of interrogations of escaped and recaptured PoWs. It was fascinating to read these stories of the reasons they were escaping. Many did so to stay in the states. They were trying to make their way to relatives who had immigrated to the US.

  4. BD 1985 at DCI Canada, it started raining during our finals show. The crowd started to leave the stands for cover. Something about the event kind of torqued off the corps and it was like the whole corps took the performance to the next level. And what would have been just another show became one of our best shows that season.

  5. Good point. Best intentions...only get you so far.

I had a boss in the Air Force who loved to say, "Hope is not a course of action."

    He was right.

When I was in the AF I knew a MWR major who used to gauge his job performance with the motto, "A whiny airman is a happy airman." So for him as long as there was whining he knew things were going well, but the minute the whining stopped he had to fix a problem, because no whining meant they were participating in the MWR activities.

  6. We travelled so poorly that year, it is almost a miracle we were able to execute at the level we did. In both 83 and 85 we had FAR more rehearsal time. I think most of us felt that 84 was the year of not eating and sitting on the side of the road! It was good that we had much of the show ready early that year.

p.s. Sorry about the ring. I attribute that to our luck in having Zingali. I am sure you know the level of pride you should have listening to and watching your show. Pieces of metal pale in comparison!

In 85 BD we went through your 84 year. We had a bus breakdown outside Wendover, NV and spent several hours sitting by the roadside in the desert. Later that season we lost our food truck to a fire, thus having many cold cereal breakfasts, sandwich lunches, and fast food dinners.

Thanks also for the 84 horn line compliment.

  7. Well I did a quick check and the next big film scheduled to come out at the time is the third installment of the Mummy franchise:

The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (release Aug. 1).

Maybe they're making room for Pineapple Express and the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 that open August 6.

  8. Catholic or Catholic Lite........................ "fairly" universal?

You've got a bit confused with using Catholic "Lite", Lutherans are still catholics in the wide sense of the term. You'd be better off using what the Orthodox do when describing western churches.

They suggest an algebraic expression of "with or without a" to differentiate western churches.

    :)

  9. Sound advice.

Honestly you could probably get by with 1 pair of shorts and 3-4 shirts and nobody would know the difference.

I know a guy that packed for tour in a small carry on bag. He was pretty hardcore though.

For me personally the most important thing was SOCKS. After the first time you wear them socks never feel the same, and the feeling of a brand new pair of socks is indescribable on tour because you will be much more in tune with how your feet feel.

Socks?! Who needs socks when you wear Vans all summer.

Hey wasn't the rehearsal uniform for the Scouts Speedos, because they could be washed out each night in the sink?

  10. Names for professional teams don't always make sense anyway, Nancy. Take for example...

LA Lakers - yeah, just a plethora of lakes in the LA area.

    Utah Jazz - Oxymoron

Memphis Grizzlies - Even Lewis and Clark didn't see any Grizzly bears in Tennessee.

LA Dodgers - The "Trolley Dodgers" arrived just about the time LA was digging up all their trolley tracks.

Some others just didn't make sense in other ways. Lots of teams have moved and changed their name to something more regionally identified. But why when the Minnesota North Stars moved to Dallas did they not rename themselves the Lone Stars?

If LA gets a team I hope it's an expansion so they can give it a good SoCal name. How about the Shakers? There's already a monir league baseball team called the Quakes.

    Garry in Vegas

    How about the LA Riot?

(And they can throw up gang signs after a great play)
