  1. What DCI needs is an Executive Director that can herd cats ( Voting Membership) , and keep donors and sponsors happy. DCI needs to move away from being an events only company and buy a revenue generating business. On January 1 ,2023 DCI had 14,000,000 in cash surplus.  Hope some of that was invested in various CD;s, Bonds and even the Stock Market. DCI can only give back so much to the membership each year.

  2. There is a Pacific Division within DCI and they meet at the Januals to discuss issues affecting the West Coast corps.   If an open class corps runs their own show once they meet the show contract minimum requested by DCI  they keep all of the money.  For the last several years if  you want to run an open class show DCI has been offering favorable contract.  The idea the Open Class never get money is false.

Pioneer is still running a bingo operation. I’m curious what they’re funding with the proceeds.
(I actually shook my head a bit in disgust when I typed Pioneer.) 😉

Capital Regiment is still running  a bingo operation seventeen years after shutting down   990 fillings say they are operating a drum corps.   Show two employees Executive Director and is girlfriend and all funds go toward their salaries.

All proceeds from Pioneer bingo go toward Roman;s living expenses.  Now days the smart Executive Directors have retirement plans setup before they are hired.

It should not be hard.  DCI BoD should follow the rules.  If they knowingly allow an organization that is not in legal compliance to participate, do they then open up DCI to some liability?   DCI needs to be talking to their legal counsel (& listen to them, even if it isn’t what they want to hear).

All of these issues have been resolved before SCV announced. Several corps have multiple Tax ID,s and file 990;s under each Tax ID.  Look at  what the Cadets did pickup a new Tax ID from an inactive group and change the name.  Active Tax ID's with 501C status can be purchased.

Downplaying critical voices is the exact opposite of how nonprofits should be run or regarded by the public. In my and others' cases, this downplaying has metastasized to the point were some of us feel less safe in our homes and online. Thanks "fellow alum" from "our family." While I'm criticizing the org, doing my best to leave names out of it, some alum are actually attacking public, named individuals, some of us victims of organizational abuse at Vanguard. Kudos. 👍🏽

Dissent is a key ingredient in how public nonprofit oversight is supposed to work. I find it eerily reminiscent of my marching days that so many apologists for VMAPA rush to their side, continue to pull the wool over their eyes, and remain quick to silence valid concerns that challenge them. They're rushing to the side that has more power and will survive this (I firmly believe this,) rather than the powerless side that has little actual chance of having their valid concerns addressed or of influencing change for the better. That is, if we're still identifying and choosing sides. Despite my proclivity to dissent, I still advocate for the betterment of the organization because again, dissent is a critical tool in doing so in healthy orgs. I actually am still on Team Vanguard... it's just been made clear that I'm (and other qualified professionals are) not wanted time and time again by the "family," likely because the family still doesn't understand the constructive role of dissent. Even as adults. Too busy idolizing their patches, rings, and JONZ Showcase ###### paraphernalia I'd wager.

The following was produced by Santa Clara University on the role of dissent in nonprofit board governance. I posit that extending its premise to include stakeholder dissent is also necessary and crucial in VMAPA's case, as I have gotten no sense (in my direct interactions with this BOD) that dissent or disagreement plays the critical role it should be in healthy nonprofit governance. Instead they have all the signs of siloing and diminishing their numbers for the last several years.

Take the recent instance of the BOD treasurer leaving as just one example.

    https://www.scu.edu/ethics/all-about-ethics/dissent--a-missing-ingredient-in-nonprofit-governance/

Now that my dissenting voice is added, among the many already here, let's see how long this thread lasts. I predict that the nature of the apologists' arguments will descend into personal attacks as they always do.

This post is off topic and needs to removed. Using every tread to promote your agenda needs to be sopped.

Wild thought- have DCA Champ do an exhibition before DCI WC finals. I know there are 3 champs, use the one with highest score.

DCA Championships would have to be done by 3:00 PM so DCI can clear stadium for 5:00 PM opening  for DCI WC Finals. Exhibition would lave to be between 6:00 PM to 7:00 PM. What corps is going to want to perform a second time so soon after winning the All Age Event.  All the DCA Champ is going to get is a five minute video blurb some time during finals.

  7. Saturday is going to be fine.  At 6:30 PM at East Gate there were  five lanes open and only one was needed.  Scanners were sitting on tables wondering why they were there. DCI learns from their mistakes. Example Houston DCI  moved the ticketed  entrance to East side of stadium and  all issues solved.   Saturdays crowd is expected to be the largest finals ever at Lucas Oil.  If you arrive at West Gate without a Friends Lanyard just tell them that you left it at your hotel.   I bet they let you in by showing your ticket on your phone.   There will not be a repeat of last years events. Goal is to get all ticketed  in to Lucas on time.

    No it’s not a take. It’s a question.

Music City is clearly a terrible comparison. They are already within striking range of finals and barely arrived on the scene. They are clearly investing in their future and are touring a normal schedule.

Genesis is new. They are struggling. Maybe they make it, maybe they don’t. But it seems they are trying.

Is Jersey Surf trying? I honestly do not know. I’m not trying to be mean or say they should consider moving to Open Class. I’m asking, at some point does it make sense to keep finishing at or near the bottom of world class while not even being able to commit to a consistent tour schedule?

It is all about the money. World Class corps get paid appearance fees and Open Class don't.  Regardless how many shows Surf is in they get all benefits that other World Class receive including a share of the profits that may occur if DCI has a payout.

I'm going to say some controversial things

    1) I hate this regional set up. Find a dome and stop this two day garbage

    2) this stadium is straight garbage. Worst venue I ever performed in.

Allentown is a cash cow for DCI and will be around forever.  You rated it has worst venue because you had to walk up a short hill to get to feed.   Fans have to walk up a hill three times harder to get to their seats.

Even though many of us here may be planning to watch Thursday night on FloMarching, there is still a significant segment that will go to the theater because they don't subscribe to Flo or prefer to enjoy the movie theater experience more. Since Big, Loud, and Live shows the full shows of the last 15 seeded corps, I think that 14 are locked in for Big, Loud, and Live and there is still a close battle for that 15 seed. Namely between Madison, Spirit, Academy, Music City, or someone from Open Class. So, who will make it on to the big screen so that Mom, Dad, classmates at home can see their show. I will guess Spirit of Atlanta but I would prefer to see Music City. What is your guess?

At Prelims all of the World Class perform after all Open Class corps have performed,  My preference is the Academy.

  11. Saw the final run through from Thursday night.   The center cube missing which made for weird visuals.  Bob the Builder has been called in to repair. In Whitewater I saw the prop crew taking the cubes apart.  Difficult operation.  3rd tenor in. Many changes in and a lot of cleaning done.  Blue Stars have one four hour rehearsal block from 10:30 AM to 2:30 PM  but even that may be cut back.   It is hot here today but should be ok by start time and sun is down.

  12. The Blue Stars show is just one of several great shows this season. Attendance has been up at most shows.  People will pay to see corps perform in person. DCI has to be pleased with the season so far but will it increase attendance at finals probably not.

You are not going to see much change in rankings before finals.  Top corps know how to play the game. With the majority of senior staff Music Educators  not many changes can be done after San Antonio because staff has to leave for band camps and other  commitments.  Staff is flown in for the weekend shows but how much can they get done on show days. Techs have to do all the cleaning and not all Techs can clean.

5th is crazy for Blue Stars. They are in the 7th - 9th group.  Top four are a lock.  5th and 6th are a toss up between Phantom and Mandarins. Battle for 12th will be interesting.

Sit back and enjoy the rest of the season and don't freak out if your corps score doesn't increase every day.

Cavies seem to be under the radar a bit. That show have emotional impact, and alot of demand. I hope they clean clean clean clean and do everything to get this beast to its full potential.

Once corps get to Texas and temperatures remain high corps will be forced to short rehearsal blocks.  Difficult to clean, clean and clean.  Last thing that DCI wants to hear is  that  a corps has several members get heat stroke from rehearsals.

LOL, Very True.  I have no knowledge of their current rehearsal situation since the extent of my communication with my kid last night was “PC might make finals.  Holy Crap!” (He’s a BD MM that endured regular tour woes with Gold, The Academy, and Pacific Crest).

I guess they’re living the high life while rehearsing 12 hour days.  🤣

If you check Blue Devis calendar on their website you will see that their rehearsal schedule for today was 7.5 hours..  On show days Blue Devils  normally rehearse on average eight hours or less.  Two three hour blocks some days.

I'm expecting significant cleaning and some reductions and tweaks in the score to make the music flow better.

They've been busy in the Chicagoland area with their community commitments the past week and a half, but are likely on the road by now.

I expect them to score in the low 80s when they get to Mississippi. Should be interesting!

low 80s is expected but there will be eight corps with higher scores.  Cavaliers have only two chances to improve their scores before seeding for San Antonio.

Looking forward to this show because the corps have had a little more practice after the grueling North Cali events. This will help see how much they have fixed and if they are keeping their momentum going!  Items I'm excited to see:

    1.  Debut of Seattle Cascades - really excited to see what they put on the field with their return

    2.  Can PC continue to trim BKs lead?

    3.  Will The Academy close the gap on both PC and BK.

    4.  What little gems has BD added in the 2 days they've had to play with the show.

Corps will still be burnt out with two long travel nights and short rehearsal days. No one really greats a break until after Fort Collins.  Boston arrives    Fort Collins  rested and ready to take on the Mandarins and Blue Devils.

Can anyone corroborate any of this? And also compare with other drum corps?

(e.g., as a $500+ donor to Phantom Regiment and Blue Stars, I've never been asked to vote for anything nor should I be)

In December 2022 I left a corps board that I had served on for sixteen years. I have called in and attended board meetings for several corps during that time.  Getting people to attend  zoom board meetings and a annual general meeting via zoom is difficult.  Madison;s requirement that a person  must have donated $ 500 or volunteered 50 hours to  vote at the annual general meeting is unusual but better than what  many corps are doing.  No notice of board meetings and no  notice of annual general meeting.  If you are a 501c you  are required to hold a Annual  General Meeting and you must make it easy for people to attend. Certain information must be shared with those in attendance.    My issue with the Scouts is the board not paying Chris  his full salary each year.  Deferred compensation is a recipe for a disaster to come.

If you are an Alum with a large estate get your  affairs in order. Corps want you live as long as possible but too many are leaving us without there wishes known. I am in a multi year plan to give to corps the majority of my estate to corps before I die.
