  1. I read most of the comments in this thread. A few of my own:

    1) I'm surprised it took this long. The reality is that the top groups already attract the most talent, draw the most fans, sell the most souvenirs, and are the most attractive to outside sponsors. In a rough economy, they are going to make sure (indeed, their management has the responsibility to make sure) that they are being correspondingly compensated. Drum corps isn't a completely zero-sum game, but nor is it a rapidly growing one, so this necessarily takes something from other corps.

    2) If you think that's unfair, consider the converse: what would be the attendance at a show like San Antonio or Atlanta if ONLY the non-G7 corps participated? 25%? 35%? 50%? If you guessed anything under 68% (7/22), then why do you think it's "fair" to require the G7 to subsidize corps that cannot draw their own audience?

    3) The G7 don't want to kill DCI. If they wanted to leave to form their own circuit, they could do so. They've chosen to try to do this within the DCI structure. The most likely reason is that they hope that other corps will someday succeed at a similar level. 5 years ago, Crown would not have drawn enough audience to earn a place in the G7. Today, they obviously do. It's pretty easy to imagine a resurgent Madison in a few years drawing enough fans to justify growing G7 into G8.

    4) It's entirely possible that this hurts the G7 competitively while rewarding them financially. If, say, Blue Stars are working all day, every day on their field show while the Bluecoats have to devote time to other music, encores, "anything goes" performances, etc., then who's going to claim that 6th place spot at Finals?

    5) If I were forced to choose between a Saturday regional with the Top 22, and a Sunday G7 show, I'd pick the Sunday show. It's not that there's nothing to like in the non-G7 shows - I sit through all of quarters and semis each year, and there always are a couple of gems - but I'd value encores, concert pieces, etc. from the top groups more.

why only from the top groups more? that's like saying, the other groups have no talent so they can't play these pieces either?

  3. I have got to stop worrying about this and get on with my day. So, I have made a decision that helps me as of right now. A huge fan of Cadets shows for the past 2.5 decades, and a yearly financial contributor, my check will not be written this May. My love of Cadet performances (as well as other corps) is out ranked by my love of the activity and desire to see it grow, not diminish. I will still help kids march, but not write any more checks to corps.

George, have you forgotten your roots and early drum corps experiences? Its about the performances and the kids, lots of kids, not just those lucky enough to wear maroon and gold.

  4. Here YOU go again.

You keep going by DCI's website and you have been shown repeatedly that they do not update their site in a timely manner. Do you not now see City Sound as an active Open Class Corps on DCI's site? Here I am the Corps Director telling you that we passed and we will be out this year and you are still making silly comments. What is your purpose?

I will tell you what, just wait and see. :throwupen:

I have heard of armchair quarterbacks in football and have even met a few. I didn't know they had armchair drum majors in Drum Corps. :throwupen:

dci updated their website with all the new and re-emerging corps, Genesis, Forte, Platinum, Spokane, Spartans, so you can not really say they don't update in a timely manner. I do see you as an active oc corps. we all know you passed evaluation, just wondering if it's for competition or exhibition. DCI will put you on their site as active once you pass, yes, just not on schedule if exhibition, always done in the past that way. which shows will you be competing in? good luck to you, for reals, was just wonderin, no silly comments, a fair question. :lookaround:

  5. I may be wrong, but I do believe that instructors teach different Corps who compete against each other In all Divs. of DCA and DCI.

    Dean

PS It is great to see the Floats back engaged in this Activity once again. :plain: :plain:

I do not think i have heard of the same instructor being with two competing corps in the same division. Can you name whom?

and yes, thank you VK for bringing the Floats back :plain:

  6. good for you City Sound!

How are the Floats going to teach two lines that are competing against each other, and how can they be caption heads at 2 different corps? NOT tryin to start something here, just am curious and i believe it's a valid question, i'm sure there are mor than just me who are curious. How will that work? how is it fair to both lines?

  7. Thanks for that, Mayra.

Great to see Spartans back, Forte making the transition from Memphis, Southern Texas with a corps, and another corps in the Carolinas.

Let's see if Spokane & City Sound can join 'em!!!

definitely thank you for that Mayra, guess my next question is what shows are these corps going to be competing in? are they listed on your websites or better yet, when is dci going to add you to the schedule? welcome to OC

so any one know what is going on with spokane and city sound? not a word aobut them

  8. Well, you do have to give those in "power" some time to contact the corps and then make changes/additions to the website and figure out when/where the corps will be performing on tour. I believe the final meeting took place late in the week.

that's good news indeed, can you say which 4 out of the 6 listed on the dci website waiting for evaluation are you referring to?

  9. I dont want to take the wind out of the corps' announcements, but looks like we can add 4 corps to the Open Class schedule!!

you must be associated with dci correct and "know" something we do not? where are they on the schedule? are you hinting or just come out say it make the announcement
