    A couple other thoughts...

Design staffs are getting big. SCV, Bloo, and BD, to name a few. Regiment's is staying the same. Quantity isn't necessarily quality, but it's worth noting that a lot of the competitive groups garner ideas from a lot of folks.

I don't know what role an Artistic Director has with a corps, especially the Troopers in 2019. But I thought the unis that the 2019 Troopers wore were pretty bland (and may have said worse in Indy). I don't mind the "show-specific costume" approach, but if you're going to abandon the Trooper identity, the costume should really be worth it. I'd say it wasn't. Adam Sage was the AD with the Troopers last year...

Along those lines, some corps have "color" guys that really help with the color palette and with set design. Greg Lagola and Michael Raiford at Bloo are great examples. It'd be nice if Regiment had some consultants or design team to help with this. I thought Alan Spaeth did some nice work with them before.

I thought they always had a great palette when sage was there previously, especially 2005.

Legit curiosity... how does an old school feet guy operate in the current staging environment? Is it still essentially the same teaching philosophy?

I'm less concerned with his cleaning ability than his teaching style.

Wasn't he at spirit recently? Anyone who was familiar with him there will probably be a better source than me, since it's been 15+ years since my opinion was formed. DCI is different now.

WP played a big role in fostering a positive culture at phantom regiment, and I would not like to see that change. I missed the part of the article that showed caption heads. Looks like Courtney Allyson Mills is caption head as well. She is EXCELLENT!

Bob Smith returning! Clean feet again.

I think this is a pretty great team they’ve assembled; hopefully this means they’ve finally turned the corner.

Also, my sincere best wishes to Will Pitts in his future endeavors.

really? Not sure I'm as excited about that one.

  4. I am beyond happy. Phantom is going to be my favorite corps year after year again 😄

I think one of the reasons JD Shaw left in the first place is because  he was tied to a certain genre of music and couldn't do anything else without backlash. I hope they let JD play whatever the hell he wants to play now!

True, but I think there are still other uncertainties.

For example, I think Will Pitts and Rob Ferguson were pretty close. If indeed Pitts isn't around, does Ferguson stay? If indeed Pitts isn't around, was it a recent decision? That could delay other design hire decisions.

I see evidence that Ferguson is staying, which is great.

  7. I haven't blue devils been doing at auditions at BOA for a long time? Other corps have to I believe.

What's interesting is the guard auditions in SoCal. Have they done that in the past? Makes me wonder if they are bringing in a guard person from SoCal

Oh for crying out loud why do you even go there.  You have absolutely no clue how WP approaches writing music.

Thank you, I was going to make a similar post earlier but couldn't even deal with it.

DCP is hilarious. I'd venture to guess he doesn't know anything about WP,'s approach to writing music or anything about him at all. Or JD Shaw for that matter, because if he did he'd know that JD Shaw has 10x the ego that Will does. 😂

Granted, JD has more than earned it!

I like what the Cavies director said at the cinema cast. Something like (not his exact words), "We tried some things that didn't work the last few years and we decided to just be the Cavaliers."

I think Regiment needs to stop guessing what the Judges want and using things (vocals) that don't work just because everyone else is.

In 2018 SCV didn't use vocals or narration and never has, didn't use any alternative instruments etc and WON!

    BE PHANTOM REGIMENT!!!

Classical music but something new and different. Stop rehashing the old stuff.

I thought they were very phantom regiment this year.

  10. I DISAGREE with those calling for the total firing of Will Pitts. I hope he stays with the corps for a long time.

Do they need more experienced hands in the design process? Yes. Maybe an additional program designer is the answer. Someone with CRED! ... and maybe guard, but god I like their rifle work this year

anyway, Will does so much for the drum corps - and I think if those people who think he should be fired were actually involved and saw what went on, they'd have a different opinion. I'm not sure how much a 'program coordinator' contributes to the artistic design, anyway.

  11. Watched the Atlanta performance a few times, as others have said this show has come a LONG LONG way.

I've voiced my opinion on some of the design decisions but there is a lot of good stuff too! This might actually be my favorite show of theirs since Turandot!

The visual was probably the hottest of hot messes at the beginning season, but it has cleaned up well and is far more effective. Better than a good chunk of their more recent (and higher placing) shows IMO. The cross and drill leading up to it in the opener is really cool as an example. Also some really cool moments with the guard, especially weapons. Choreography with the guard ... undressing ... the brass in the block is nicely staged, just needs to be cleaned up a bit more. Also really like the interplay between male and female rifles between the call to arms chant. Nice stuff

All I wanted from phantom this year was to put on a show that I actually enjoyed watching, because that hasn't been the case lately. I think they've succeeded on that!

12th place or not, this is a much better show than several of the recent years. I'm going to stay focused on the positive from here.

If I had a dollar for every year I heard that Tony Hall came on tour with Phantom to fix the crappy drill/visual that they started with, I’d be a rich man.

I don't think you can equate Tony Hall coming on tour with a crappy visual design -- until recently he would come out at some point every year. Even the amazing jamey thompson years

    To jump on the bandwagon...

I love the chevron and kick halt, but I have to say it gets a bit old putting it in at the end. I would love to see the chevron show up when least expected. That would be cool. I will concede the kick halt to the end as a compensation for moving the chevron.

Yes, you probably said it better than I did.  Big difference between these nods as the closing of the show, vs thrown somewhere else in the show where maybe not expected. I was actually secretly hoping to see the kickout wedge at the end of the (new world) opener last year! Even the chevron in 2010 at the big into the light hit was great, It was used very effectively. I just wish I saw more evidence of a well thought out plan to end the show... and the chevron instead says to me that they are relying on something that worked in the past instead to generate their GE
