  1. I was there for that recording, technically I'm visible in it. They do sound tons better than previous years. The 30 second show clip they played sounded really darn good for this time of year. They were pretty clear about 2 goals: Make finals, Build official office/facilities.

  2. I was at Stanford tonight. I really enjoyed everyone but here are some quick takes:

BD - Sound awesome and I found it less esoteric than previous years. This is a top 3 show.

SCV - Very interesting use of the mobile platform/wheels. They sound good. No idea what the theme meant. This could be a top 3 show.

BK - Don't know what I just saw. Some cool moments but no idea how it all fit together. The weird hand movement got a lot of chuckles. Performed quite well and they sounded good.

PR - I enjoyed it. Very much a PR show with a few moments of what they are known for. Definitely not at the same level as the previous three.

Academy - I enjoyed it. They sounded better than last year at this time. Show felt very VK to me. I heard many comments about the guard dressed as bunnies being inappropriate. I wonder if this show has the same legs as last year's.

Mandarins - This is the best show concept I have seen from them. They sound significantly better than last year this time. I could see them finishing somewhere in the 11-15 range.

Pacific Crest - Are they having money problems? They sound worse than the last few years at this time. Guard had plain, single color flags and only one small, poorly constructed prop. They aren't going in the right direction. I hope they work it out?

  3. I agree that you should have thought about this and had your mind set way before you applied for internships. In my work I see tons of competition for our internship positions and see a significant volume turn into offers of employment. IMO, if you have had the drum corps experience already I would go after the internship. Drum corps is great but a leg up on your adult, professional career is rare.

  4. They took a great idea and turned it into a great SHOW. Gotta start with a great idea. But you also have to have talent with freedom to create a show FROM that idea. I could be wrong, but it sure looks like Acadmy has a happy staff of people who like working together. Exudes from everything they put on the field.

Sure but OP said "...Shows that are incredibly fan engaging and not so far out or esoteric." He didn't say anything about allowing the staff and MM free to create. I think you are right that it is pretty important, but I don't know if that's something that other corps have an issue with these days.

  5. I appreciate your post and thoughts, and maybe this is worthy of its own thread instead of derailing this one, but I do think that all judges, to eliminate any impression of favoritism, should be required to post their CV and whether they:

1 currently provide services, work, or products to any corps they are judging

    2. have, in the past, provided services, work, or products to any corps they are judging, or

    3. have any connection to any corps via staff, alum-status, students, etc.

The antiseptic of full disclosure is the only real way to rid the activity of the nepotism and favoritism that you say doesn't exist. (I want to believe you are correct, but I'm not convinced...yet... that there isn't a "club" a corps must join in order to get impartial panels.)

    (Adjusts tin-foil hat.)

I'd wish our politicians would do something similar.

Averaging is the only option at this point. This is a silly poll.
