  1. I have an extra ticket for both nights in Section Q (top stands, side 2), Row 17. PM me to discuss payment and how you would want to receive the tickets. I can have them overnighted to you if need be.

  2. Thanks for everyone help! I have figured out how I'm getting to the camps and everything is all set for me to audition for Crown's upcoming season. Money is still an issue but it has become less of an issue. I have created a fundraising /support/about me website, www.mattsfundraising.com , so I can let people know what I am up to and make it easy to donate. I will be using the money from the donations to pay for my plane flights to Crowns camps. I don't have the entire website up, but I will have it up within the next two weeks. Thanks.

  3. Yes. Contact me.

I see you are going to talk to Matt. That is great, he can advise you on your audition and such. You might want to wait until after BOA is over. I am guessing Matt will be busy full time with is Avon responsibilities. I have more of a financing/admin kind of guy there in mind who can advise on dollars and cents issues.

    how would that be...?

  4. Hey,

When the season is complete, and the staff has had at least a few weeks break, contact Matt Harloff about your situation. When I talked to him about arriving to camps, he said it wouldn't be an issue if I got there late on Friday nights for camp (obviously, I didn't continue with Crown after the first two camps due to financial issues). Yeah it's great if you can get there on time for the Friday camp to help set-up, but people fly in all across the country, especially from Florida. However, you might want to bank on the fact that you might not get home until late Monday morning. If you're forced to miss a day of school to attend each camp, I would consider Monday as your option, since like you said, flights from Charlotte up to your airport on a Friday night are going to be rough. The other option you have is to get there on time Friday afternoon, which means missing a complete day of school, but leaving early on Sunday. Some kids do this as well. Show-and-Tell (in the first two camps) starts at 1pm, so rehearsal usually wraps up around 12:45pm. You could either get out of rehearsal an hour early and miss show-and-tell (which isn't a big deal), or talk to the staff and see if you can skip the big clean-up (which is what extends the day camp to about 3, 4, or even 5pm). In exchange, you can just tell them that you'll get there well before camp starts (usually first meeting is at 6pm) and help unload all of the instruments and set them up ready to be checked out and other miscellaneous stuff they'll have you do, maybe set up the food trailer.

Like everyone is saying, yes, the easy option would be to seek out a local corps, but if you want Crown, then go for it. The best thing you can do in the mean time is as soon as they release audition packets and music, just practice practice practice, and impress the hell out of them. As long as you keep showing up to camps, 100% prepared, and big improvement between each camp, the staff will work around the minor issue of showing up late to camp or leaving early.

Lastly, getting money is rough. Like other suggestions before, give trumpet (I assume you play tpt) lessons to middle school kids, and if you're in college, give them to high school kids. Send out an e-mail and flyer to local middle/high schools in your area...charge a reasonable amount. Also, offer to give sectionals at the local schools...you can charge much less per student participating but hopefully have a lot of students in that sectional/master class, and the money adds up that way. Contact friends and family and ask for donations (this was also said before), give them info on what you're trying to do. Lastly, just get a steady part-time job...or if you're not getting enough hours, get two part time jobs. If you can't find one, keep looking. As a general rule, for every 10 applications you put in to places, only 1 of them is going to call you back for an interview.

Good luck! Sorry for the book, I hope this info helps.

Thanks for the info I will contact Matt after their season is over. I will be trying my best to get two jobs and using my trumpet skills to generate extra cash as much as possible. I agree with everything you said and thanks again for the response.

  5. Were they on the same captions? Too lazy to check.

I knew Crown would get at LEAST a 94.5 yesterday because they're not going to give the winner of the second night something like a 93..I know they are trying to be objective but there is that human element involved and even with the same panels...they compared Crown to SCV, not to Blue Devils/Cadets/Cavies...but it IS a promising result for CC!

First show out of Allentown Crown will probably be about .5 ahead of the rest, and I think that's more realistic/accurate. They really recovered from the sickness well! Championships will be insane, especially if CC and others can tighten the gap with BD

I completely agree but what about the extra full day of practice Crown and SCV got wile BD/cadets/cavs were at allentown. The judges base their scores off the other night, but they had one full day more of rehersals right. Id say it would only be about half a point lower (in my opinion) if crown and scv went july 31st. I do think it is going to be very close between now and aug 8th.

  6. Okay, let's figure this out...

Plattsburg to Albany (airport) is about a three hour drive. Need to arrive two hours before flight for security. I doubt you'll get a direct flight, so plan at least an hour layover somewhere. You will have to leave on Friday early a.m. in order to get there for a Friday night start. Coming back is probably worse.

I admire your ambition and desire, but I really doubt that you can make this work given your school choice.

Alright so yes plattsburgh to albany is a 3 hr drive given moderate driving conditions. So lets assume I leave at about 8am. therfore i should get to albany at approximately 11:00am. This would leave me an 1 hr and 45 min to get through security and get ready to leave. I looked up the times of when the flight leaves and this is what i found:

    Airline: US Airways

    Depart: Albany International Airport

    Departure Time: 14:45, Friday 20 November 2009

    Arrive: Charlotte

    Arrival Time: 16:55, Friday 20 November 2009

    Stops: Non-Stop

    Travel Time: 2hrs 10mins

    http://www.albanyairport.com/alb_schedules.php

This would get me to Charlette NC by 4:55. then crown will have transportation from there to camp.

I haven't figured out a way back but im working on it. let me know what you think so far.

I know its a stretch, but i have to do it some how. I have decided that I will not be able to do the upcoming season with crown, but i will still go to the first camp to get myself out there and to see where I stand marching and playing wise. I will work toward the next season and will look for another corp to join as well. and again let me know what you think. thanks.

  7. Dude, if you're going to SUNY Plattsburgh you have a definite challenge in getting to Crown's weekend camps. How the heck are you going to find air transportation close enough to school that you don't have to drive six hours to get to a US airport? Go to Montreal? If I were you, I'd be looking at Brigs or some other DCA corps. Get some drum corps experience, then decide if you want to commit to a whole summer of constant pressure.

I had forgotten that i was in the middle of nowhere but figured out that i can get a ride to albany and fly out from there.

  8. Check this site out.

    http://www.pullanthropy.com

Do some odd jobs like clean gutters and stuff.

    Walk peoples dogs.

Give horn lessons to HighSchrool kids. Be creative.

If you don't make Crown it's all over? That would be the biggest mistake next to not marching your age out year.

If you like Crown then you would probably like Phantom and the Cadets.

You can't tell me it wouldn't be fun Playing for Boston.

Don't put all those eggs in one basket.

thank you that was one of the things i was looking for. thanks for the help.

  9. Money should not stand in the way of dreams and you cannot put a price on the experience you will have. Like trying to find the money for college, there is probably a way to make it work. Have you talked to anyone at Crown about helping plan the financial side? There are some great folks down there who can help and advise you.

I have not yet talked to any at crown, but I do plan to when their session is over. I don't know what to say to them about the situation. Do you know specifically who I should contact?

  10. I noticed that you're from Poughkeepsie; correct me if I'm wrong but I'm assuming you're talking about Arlington Marching Band. There are a bunch of kids from Arlington marching with the Brigadiers this year. A friend of mine from Arlington marched with us last season and is now marching with Crown this season. I'm not saying you have to march with the Brigs, or any other DCA corps for that matter, but I'm sure that the DCA experience helped my friend in his audition. Maybe think a little harder about looking into a DCA corps before jumping right into DCI. I marched with a marching band in the NYSFBC for four years also and I can say that drum corps has been a completely different beast for me (besides switching from saxophone to mellophone  ). Plus, dues for DCA corps are generally lower than a DCI corps, giving you one more season to save up the money you need to march with Crown. Just my opinion, good luck with whatever you decide to do

Yes I was in the AMB and I know the kids that are in brigs and they enjoy it. I dont know if I would as much. I also know your friend and have talked to him a little, but won't get to talk with him more until his season is over. He recommended that I do a DCA corp, but i decided not because of time and money(although it is less then crown). Thanks for the suggestion.

  11. Some people have success asking their Family and Friends for sponsorship. Explain what you are trying to do and why you want to march with Crown so badly. If you can show them a clip of the corps performing, it might give them a better idea of what you are talking about. You might be surprised how much money you could put together just by asking.

Even busy college students can (and usually have to) find part-time work while at school. Most campus-area businesses are used to working around student schedules. Put any money you can earn away until you have enough to cover your corps fees. Lots of people wish they were in corps like Crown every year. Only 150 do what it takes to actually do it.

Do you mean like send a letter asking for money for the purpose of joining the drum corp? And maybe mail a dvd of a drum corp show, so that they could see what its all about? I think is a good idea I might just try that. Thanks for the suggestion.

  12. I realize that most high school band directors are like that, but at my school all of the band directors are have marched in a corp, written music for corps, and/or are judges. I know the backgrounds of most of my former directors fairly well and trust them and their opinions. It will take some time for me to see how things work out, but I will work it out.

  13. I have marched for four years in a very competitive marching band and i know it doesn't compare with DCI, but I was told by my director that if I didn't go into a top DCI corp that I might not get the full challenge and experience that i was looking for. He (and I) just want me to be able to push myself to my highest potential. Weather it be playing with constant and good tone quality while doing a jazz run down the field or playing a tricky run before an impact I want to be able to have the challenge put in front of me so that when i look back at my time in a corps that i can say to myself "I could not done anything else better, I did my best".

I will go to Crown this year and audition, but if i dont have enough money or dont make it, i dont think that a DCA corp is for me or even another DCI corp.

  14. Hey everyone,

Well heres the deal, I am planning on auditioning for Carolina Crown in the up coming fall. The problem is I live in NY, am going to college (SUNY Plattsburgh), and have only about $1000 (all my graduation money). I am confident I have what it takes to be in the corp, but I am a little concerned about the financial part of it. I would rather not get into the corp because I am not good enough rather then not having enough money.

Its not like I haven't tried to find a job but because of my hectic school schedule I could only have a job during the summer but no one would hire for the just summer in my area. I do intend to get a job when i come back for the winter break, but that either is not going to be enough or I will not get a job because of the economy.

Any ideas, comments, suggestions, or anything would be very much appreciated. If anyone is an alum of Crown and has an ideo of how they handle the money issue that would be a great help. Thanks.
