  1. Surprised to see no one speaking about full percussion staff announcement.

Two things stick out...very Phantom heavy as nearly every staffer is a PR alum. I'm ok with it.

No cymbal staff listed which I guess means Scouts will once again abandon the plates. That is a shame and kinda p***** me off.

  2. If change in instructional/design staff is all the change we get, and it works for the better, then I'll be good.

With that said, the new arranger and his jazz background is leading to a thought that The Men will do jazz this summer. I'm typically not a huge fan of jazz shows under one condition. If Scouts do jazz...please please please at least give us some raunchy, dirty, filthy-style big-band jazz. No happy toe-tappin stuff. I want to feel like I need a shower. Ha ha. Maynard, Connick, even some Buble stuff like "Feeling Good".

     Just my two cents.

  3. Listen to recordings of Scouts in the 90s...especially 95, 97 and 99 and hear the crowd. The vast majority loved those shows. You can't please everyone, but it feels like Scouts have gone opposite. Some loved recent shows but it feels like most are indifferent.

I personally WANT Scouts to get back to the macho, bombastic, over-the-top style. That's what so many fell in love with.

Would a Mardi Gras theme work?  Plenty of Brass, front ensemble doing clarinet work, it could even be titled MADI Gras!

I remember Magic of Orlando doing a Mardi Gras ish show in the mid 90s. Opened with Little Liza Jane. Was a great show.

  5. I don't see how drum corps message boards should or are any different than say a collegiate sports message board. You're basically dealing with same age range once you get to elite corps. Why do we have to be so sensitive? I would never specifically call out the members but will certainly call out staff.

I'm an Auburn fan and and alum. If the head coach and his staff are not putting the players in the best position to succeed..I will call them out. If a player sees it...sorry. But I won't lose sleep over it.

With Scouts, it starts at the top. If that fails, then the rest fails. Changes need to happen to get Scouts back to competing with the eltes. If someone gets offended...sorry, not sorry. Toughen up. Otherwise we can just keep treading water, talking about the good food they ate and how nice the busses were...and begin hoping to just remain in Top 17 while they everyone passes by.

  6. So total conspiracy theory here. Did the admin purposefully put a dud out there knowing a horrible placement would happen so they could push the co-ed agenda? Kind of a "see, we told you we can't survive as all male" type deal?

I would hope that isn't the case. But with how it was discussed pre season and then this pitiful design, you can't help but wonder.

SCV, BD and Bloo's screamers seem to be getting great reactions

Not how it used to be by any stretch. You could have one screamer bring the stadium down. Not so much now. Shoot, go back and watch Coats' Downside Up. That one solo scream got a huge reaction...because he winked at the camera. In ATL the screamers barely got a notice. The ridiculous note by the SCV dude got a polite applause but in years past that would've drawn a roar they could've heard in Savannah.

  8. I have predicted for a while now that Troopers will pass by...possibly in Allentown. And BDB and SCVC will pass them in Indy.

Then we hold our collective breath to see if Scouts survive the offseason. Unfortunately the type of finish on the horizon coupled with the financial issues mentioned before is usually to death nail.

  9. Ha...I won't go to quite the extreme of FlamMan. I think Scouts changes are this.

Ditch the stupid show-themed costumes. Be modern but with more of something recognizable as Scouts. Put the d**n aussies back on.

Ditch whoever is designing these shows. New ideas and new thoughts on ways to be modern and competitive, but recapture that Madison Scout style that has vanished.

Design a show that isn't completely based on "getting the storyline". Let the music and visuals (marching) do the work. Scouts should never be doing a show where the crowd has to ponder the deep meaning of why or what. The show needs to be a "it just is"... i.e. Tilt, Downside Up. No deep storyline to follow and get.

Get the butts out of the seats....whatever it takes. Screamers no longer seem to do it as in the past. But find something new and inventive. Scouts should be the corps that folks blow the interwebs up talking about "did you see THAT?" Scouts need to once again be the perennial crowd favorite.

  10. I side with Plankton...no way can I be happy when Scouts are placing along the levels of where we placed when I was with Southwind in the 90s.

Moreso, the product is not as good as others. If I thought the product was elite and Scouts were just getting scrwed by the judges then I'd direct my anger elsewhere. This product is not on the level of elite.

  11. Just back from Atlanta...so my two cents.

The show isn't quite as bad as I was expecting, but it's still not good, especially compared to some of the really cool and exciting programs above them. In general the Scouts show is just boring. Some ok stuff on the back half, but overall just boring. But then again maybe I'm just dumb and don't easily pick up on abstract, nuisanced meanings. I like to have the meaning spelled out for me...like Boston does literally. Or a show that has no story per say. It's just called "Rock your face" and the music and drill does it.

Anyway, I just don't see Scouts improving drastically enough with such a bad product to make Top 17. I think Troop passes them and then SCVC and maybe another will as well.

    Such an unfortunate season.

  12. As a former member of Scours drumline it gripes me that Roger Carter is gone. I came up through DCI when Roger was at BD and that dude was an icon.

I was thrilled when he was hired to lead Scouts line. Now I watch videos of Coats' line, RC on the drumset, and how cool and trendy they are.

  13. It's nice to have some positive opinions about Scouts here. But I'm sorry..I can't sunshine pump when my once proud corps has lost all sense of identity and is now in serious threat of not even making the Top 17.

Change HAS to be made. This ship HAS to be righted or there will no longer be any such thing as The Madison Scouts.

  14. "Forgetting it's Madison" is precisely why so many are furious right now. That should NEVER be the case. To throw out everything that is Madison Scouts, to totally lose your identity for the sake of conforming to the activity makes me sick. There is no reason Scouts couldn't maintain their identity and still be modern, exciting AND competitive. Instead the admin has gone to the complete opposite end of the tradition spectrum...and it may kill this corps.

  15. I am just so sad at what is happening to Scouts and I am now fully on board with a full regime change. I have no personal issues with those in charge and they've been cordial to me as an alum. However, this thing is spiraling out of control and a change needs to be made. I equate it to a sports team...when you're getting your tail beat and not putting a quality product out their..the head coach, GM, AD, waterboy...all of em are out of a job.

Time for Scouts to clean house. Take a deep look at everything and right the ship. Because right now the ship is taking on water quicker than the Titanic.

  16. And I've seen this from the younger generation of musicians. I meet them and say I marched Scouts. It is now met with indifference. It used to be met with pure joy at the fact they were in the presence of a Madison Scout. Now it's to the point that you feel you have to explain you marched when they were an elite corps and constant fan favorite. These are the same kids that will pick a corps to march and Scouts aren't even thought of as a dream destination.
