  1. C McN & G C from Cadets to BAC

Hop out as Program Coordinator (still Exec Dir)

Brass Caption head at Troopers resigning after getting into physical altercation with stadium security in INDY

That's been the buzz this week.

Boston Crusaders fans: keep close to Twitter or Facebook, perhaps as early as Monday.

  2. Not going so far as to title this winners and losers, because all the corps are winners, right?

Thumbs up - achieving or surpassing expectations

    1. Bluecoats. Self explanatory

    2. Cavaliers. Reconfiguring of the design and teaching teams pays dividends.

    3. Academy. Top 12 written all over this corps

    4. Lower tier of World Class - From Oregon Crusaders to Pioneer all have all upped their game in 2017.

    5. Spirit of Atlanta. They exist as a viable organization. Don't underestimate what that means.

Thumbs down - the offseason hype didn't help

    1. Cadets. Raise your hand if you saw this coming all Winter. I see a lot of hands up.

    2. Troopers. Must be the new uniforms, right?

    3. Boston Crusaders. Who will be the 2017 Messiah? The last 3 big names haven't lived up to the homers crowing

    4. DCI Board. The decision to not publish recaps = epic fail on many levels. The last thing judges need is less accountability. Maybe the answer is more judge training?

  3. I bet the last thing Genesis expected after San Antonio was to be looking up at Legends and Spartans. Did they peak in front of a pretty much hometown crowd?

    Other questions....

It's an even year, so that means Blue Devils B win, right?

Who raises performance levels amongst the next tier to grab the bronze like Spartans did last year?

What will it take for Music City to break into that tier next year? Certainly isn't membership nor the amount of time on the road.

Is this the Raiders swan song? After barely making it out on the road again this year (Exec Dir resigning, then not resigning...) things are bleak - especially when the corps loses the support of its board of directors.

Can Guardians jump back in and surge over the last few days? Don't count them out for top 7.

Lastly, I hope all the members, instructors, administrative/support teams and fans enjoy the Michigan City experience.....is it possible to replicate the small town environment with decent sized stadium elsewhere?

It appears some tiers have formed among the corps who will be at championships:

    1. BDB and SCVC

    2. Legends, Spartans, and Genesis

    3. Music City and 7th Regiment

    4. Gold, Guardians, Raiders, Louisiana Stars, and Shadow

    5. Impulse

    6. Colt Cadets and River City Rhythm

    7. Stentors

Will the corps stay in these groupings, or will any of them break into another level?

Guardians haven't been scored for more than a week, but given that they were exactly five points behind Genesis when those two corps last appeared together, they'd still be in the fourth tier if they improved at the same rate. I wonder, though, if they'll actually be using all those yellow radioactive material barrels on the field, if they'd see a notable jump in G.E.

  4. This may be the funniest post I have read in many years on Drum Corps Planet.

Scores are manipulated to please the marketeers of DCI? Did you march in a corps from Roswell, New Mexico?

I think the scores are pretty meaningless as they are being manipulated by DCI much as professional wrestling manipulates their audience for revenue generating storylines. The numbers and the boxes are meaningless now; it’s all about slotting the corps and backing the scores in to please the marketers of DCI. The BK scores are laughable and insulting to other corps with full shows of actual content

Which isn’t really so bad if your beef with the scores is the want to motivate the ‘kids’

I’d prefer the numbers assigned based on the criterion set by the sheets without political biases and influences which means I’m following the wrong activity entirely

  5. Order of appearance dictates how long a given corps rehearsal day.

Pioneer ends their day @ 2 to be at a show by 5 to go on at 7

Blue Devils end their rehearsal day at 5 to be at a show by 8 to go on at 10.

3 hours a day x 30 or so performance days is an incredible imbalance.

Order of performance has less impact on scores than most might think. I doubt everyone agrees that order of performance is a fundamental problem. Some do, but you say "most everyone would agree" and I think that is flawed thinking. Also, order of performance has little to do with expanding the activity.

There are some fluctuations with order of performance, whether it's a home show for a certain corps in which they get to perform last, or perhaps when a corps travels way out of their region (like Madison) and the show sponsors try to mix it up as a thank you for attending.

But by and large order of performance begins with rankings from last year. The regional shows begin to adjust the performance times based on what is happening during the present season, so that is good.

Judges are very good at their jobs, despite some bickering over scores, etc. BD can go on first and they are still going to win most of them. If a corps wants to adjust their performance time, they need to get better and have that show up during championship week, then the next year they have a better starting time. If your tired of a corps or two beating you and you feel it's because they get to perform after you, then you are dismissing the talents of the judges. More to the point, go get better. Period! If you're good enough it will show up on the judges sheets, and your performance order will change.

  6. Good use of all your vocabulary words for the week. You get 1 star for effort but 2 demerits for being you.

It is the magical symbiosis between the theme and visual design that clinches it. Last year, the Bluecoats' visual program was from a dream. Ethereal and mystical, but built on a thematic foundation of day old oatmeal. Blue"s visual team was like Van Gogh painting faces at a suburban tween birthday party. Conversely, BD's Ink theme was great, but I wanted to give the marching program a nitroglycerine needle to the heart-- some of the stage pictures seemed clogged, gerrymandered and cluttered.

  7. But you made a blanket statement that they didn't do this sort of thing. That was a large bag of money tossed at someone who spoke a big game. And then sent us toilet paper with scribbles on it. I'm not certain this was an exception, but their norm judging by the treatment we received.

Well son, seeing as you are on The Raiders staff and given us very limited parameters to determine which designer it was.....why don't you elaborate?

Was this designer provided with adequate and timely information to create a high level product?

Did the corps live up to their end of the financial bargain?

Was their a musical book that allowed for a creative design or was it as much to blame?

    It goes both ways.

  8. I agree with your GE and placement choices. BK has the most well put together show this year imo, everything makes sense and is put where it is perfectly, and it's a continuation of the last two shows. I could go on and on about their program, but that's for a different thread. Gonna be an awesome year for BK, along with many others!!

"BK has the most well pit together show this year"

    Seriously?

  9. Ahhhhh, NO.

Effect scores were not the issue. Bluecoats need more substance in brass book (substance as defined/acknowledged by the DCI judging community) and better visual performance achievement.

Nice attempt to layer in College Philosophy 101 thought process though. Can hardly wait until you get to the 200 level courses....

The only missing component for the Bluecoats in the last two years has been in the design category: depth of concept. Symbolism isn't enough. There must be an underlying theme with an observation about a universal human truth, or at very least a recurring pattern that heightens for dramatic effect. Standing on top of your prop or jumping off of it isn't enough for an ending. The ending should be a culmination of the thematic set pieces that preceded it.

2015 BD: Children can teach us to listen to stories again.

2015 Crown: Dante endured the seven circles of hell to free the soul of Beatrice.

    2015 Bluecoats: Visualizing sound theory.

2014 BD: Fellini's scenes reveal his character as an anti-establishment artist.

    2014 Bluecoats: Things tilt.

  10. Only 11 ?

I stopped in at rehearsal, and was amazed with what I saw and heard.

There are only 11 spots left in the Raiders brass line. A couple of tubas, 1 bari, a few mellos, and a few trumpets. If you're looking for a place to march, know a student who is, or know of a band director that supports DCI, please send them this info.

    http://aplusarts.org/raiders

If they have any questions, then can send them my way, I'll put them in contact with the correct people. The hornline sounds amazing. Easily this is the best year hands down talent-wise, the horn book is a chop buster, and their fees are really low.

Again, if you know anyone looking to march. Send them my email. HollandLD@Gmail.com

    thanks for sharing this.

    cheers.

  11. Yes, hurting for members. A drum corps is not made up of mellophones only. Numbers do not equal quality either.

Hurting for members? I'm not sure where you're getting your information. The horn line is 90 percent set after the February camp, the earliest the corps has hit that mark. The photo on the left is the mello attendance at the March 2012 camp. The image on the right is from February 2016 camp. If this is "hurting," it must require a brass turnout of 1,000 to be healthy.

  12. Why is it an "exciting" new corps as opposed to a new corps?

Hi Brass Players and Drummers in VA, MD, DC area,

There's an exciting new "all-age" Drum & Bugle Corps called Liberty Force forming in Northern Virginia! Accessible location for rehearsals, for 18 years and older, with captivating music and visuals...
Details, website, other information coming soon. Stay tuned!
Brass players, drummers, music educators/teachers needed! Please respond if interested.
    ~Chris
  13. Maybe because the Troopers are hurting for members?

    Especially in brass?

This is my wishful-thinking-but-still-in-the-realm-of-possibility prediction - knowing next to nothing about shows.

    12. Troop (Everyone just loves to put Troop here, so why not?)

    13. Crossmen

    14. Colts

    15. OC

    16. Academy

    17. Mandarins

    18. SOA

    19. PC

    20. Cascades

    21. Surf

    22. Pioneer

Insert BDB & VC in the 15 - 20 range for semis.

  14. Except that out of the relationship with YEA came Tom Santino as brass caption head. With Tom came the membership from South Florida and Howard Weinstein. That turned the Crusaders into finalists. I'd say Boston did benefit.

Just to clarify a point and not stray too much further than this thread has; Boston did not benefit from Virginia Tech band. Maybe from Virginia Beach bands in the early 80's (like in 82) but not Virginia Tech. Then they had some down years again, eventually connecting with Florida High schools and here we are today. Nor did Boston benefit from YEA. I may not have it exactly right but believe Boston refused assistance with YEA, fearing what they might have to give up and believing all the while, they could rebuild the organization utilizing their alumni base. Which they did and that base is even more involved today. And, if rumors are true as they sometimes are (and they are rumors so don't get your dander up) Boston was approached by a Director of another top organization asking for Boston's financial help. After all the years of struggle, that would be incredibly ironic if there was any validity to the rumor. Now back to regularly scheduled predictions. I am thinking just a shuffle in the top 6 but the last top 6 is still this years top 6.

Sorry for messing up this post.

  15. Factors = $$$

Very disappointing decison by the Scouts and Boston before them.

I had the opportunity to communicate with Chris Komnick and I inquired as to why the scouts were suddenly participating in TOC shows? He indicated that a lot of factors went into play in their decision to participate and that they are looking forward to it. Personally, I am excited that the scouts are doing it as well!!!
