  1. With any luck they will keep Jay Murphy & Tim Salzman and increase their roles

Probably retain brass & percussion arrangers

Wipe the slate clean of all guard & visual sr. staff

Bring back an old visual designer or 2

Bring in an old Cavalier or 2 in as consultants.

Those would be steps in the right direction

Well in that case, please remind us in December or even later. I can rest until the hype begins. Some of those who may audition might want to know sooner.

  2. Here is what I have learned from the TOC...

    1. Order of appearance matters

    2. The directors of these corps bit off more than they could chew, with the exception of putting a gun to the head of the DCO body and demanding more money for themselves.

    3. My disgust for them (Gibbs, Coates, Glasgow, Hopkins, Fiedler, et al) is unabated.

  3. "bang for their buck"? Is there a ratio of membership fee paid to points scored?

I agree for all of the blood sweat and tears that the volunteers, staff and kids themselves sacrifice to present a top notch performance, its not part of a circus act, it should be looked at as more competitive, given its the year of Surfs anniversary, they mindset probably diverted a little from the competitive edge that other corps have. There is potential and talent but for this season I think the focus was on fun and dedication. Im quite sure these kids expected more bang for their buck. Good Luck Surf, keep the train going forward, you are a very talented bunch!

  4. Don't forget Xanadu!

Gene Kelly performed in these musicals at MGM:

For Me and My Gal (1942)

    DuBarry Was a Lady (1943)

    Thousands Cheer (1943)

    Anchors Aweigh (1945)

    Ziegfield Follies (1946)

Living in a Big Way (1947)

    The Pirate (1948)

    Words and Music (1948)

Take Me Out to the Ball Game (1949)

    On the Town (1949)*

    Summer Stock (1950)

    An American in Paris (1951)

    Singin' in the Rain (1952)*

    Brigadoon (1954)

    Deep in My Heart (1954)

    It's Always Fair Weather (1955)*

    Invitation to the Dance (1956)*

    Les Girls (1957)

Kelly co-choreographed all of these, and directed or co-directed the four shown with an asterisk.

He also appeared introducing clips in the musical compilation films That's Entertainment! (1974), That's Dancing! (1985), and That's Entertainment! III (1994).

  5. Revamped staff? Hasn't M. Hamilton been with the corps for years?

Was the staff the reason the corps had to beg for funds to go on the road?

There are numerous shows on the East Coast, looks to me like The Raiders cant afford to leave New Jersey until they leave for tour, if they leave for tour..... and of the only 2 other corps with single digit shows - one is from California and flies to the Midwest and the other is a second year corps.

  6. Here's a quote from someone in the Bridgemen who knows my son on his facebook page:

    >All of your fan club that you made last year are wickedly proud of your choice of the Raiders. You won't be able to miss your already growing fan club yelling for you from the stands . . . do good young man . . . you have landed in a magnificent corps and program!

And there was a member of the Bluecoats ('14 and '15) at camp this weekend who had marched Raiders who told my son he was in a good corps. He wants to march Bloo and she told him 8 current Bluecoats marched Raiders.

I have no doubt that open class corps is financially less secure than most world class corps but the Raiders seem OK to me. You never know though, I know a guy who marched Teal Sound and had gone through all the camps and even move ins only to have them fold before the tour started. And they were world class. Unless you march BD (they're VERY financially sound I hear), there's always a risk.

Seem financially secure? You may want to look a bit deeper. The Raiders tour less than every other competitive Open Class corps and still had major issues getting out n the road. It doesn't matter if a corps is World Class or Open Class - good management provides for a stable organization. After the fiasco of 2013 I would be very, very wary of them.

  7. Right!

Any idea who is replacing Jamey Thompson at Phantom?

Is Leon May staying at Crown even after they (unsuccessfully) tried to replace him with Pete Weber?

Who is Boston bringing in to replace Program Coordinator & the drill designer?

Can we all agree here now that the last page or so of comments havn't a thing at alll to do with the topic of off season " staff merrigorounds" ... the thread has been hijached... and that perhaps the mods here have all fallen asleep the last 24 hours. ? They usually are on the ball, and reign the DCP'ers in, when the comments begin to stray so far off the mark regarding the OP's topic, that we now are reduced to the ridiculousness discussion of what alleged time killing things a few MM's do on bus trips between show stops. ( which could perhaps make for an interesting thread topic all on its on, who knows,... but its certainly got nothing to do with this thread topic. )

  8. Right. E.Hampton took over from O.Carmenetes in 2010? 2011? Has the percussion program improved ? Doesn't appear to be according to scoring. His act is wearing thin.

The percussion is heading in the right direction. Ellis had a great book for the kids this past summer, and if he is still on board, look for them to continue to improve.
