  1. Well then the Open Class corps would have to be paid appearance fees commensurate with the lower tier of World Class. Don't see that happening anytime soon.

Perhaps a better solution would be to stop the foolishness of all corps on one set of sheets. The Open Class paradigm worked well for years. Were it not for the Chief Judge and Artistic Director shoving this change down the throats of the OC Directors last Winter, we'd never be discussing eliminating the Open Class. Does it really make sense to evaluate the Blue Saints vs The Blue Devils?

Even the corps with the most outward aspiration to move to the World Class has had issues and had the single sheet concept blow up in the their face! The public rant on Facebook (now deleted) by the Director of Genesis showed his true colors.......not a good representation of the Open Class or Drum Corps in general.

  3. Why nno brass judge?

DCI adopted a 5 judge panel for shows prior to 7/5 a few years ago. It used to be 2 effect, 2 analysis & 1 rotating judge (vis perf, brass perf, guard & perc perf). I believe this season the only 2 constants are the GE judges. Pretty sure the West Coast is different as they pay extra to provide full panels (with the exception of the shows in the Pacific Northwest.

  4. It's awfully late to be change programs...

In an exciting turn of events, Genesis DBC announces a new production plan for 2014.

Our new production, titled "Art of Darkness", will explore the descent from the light of Reality to the dark images of Madness.

"The creative team and I felt that this years group had a maturity about them that was ready for a production of this caliber. For now we will hold off on the original concept for future use and we are all very excited about this new direction."

Art of Darkness will feature a revisitation of the corps 2012 source material composed by Two Steps From Hell and will also include Lux Aeterna (from Requiem for a Dream) and Mad World (from Donnie Darko)

you can follow all the 2014 news on our Facebook www.genesisdbc.org

  5. ....and the winner wasn't Tampa Bay Thunder.

Folding before ever taking the field sets a new standard in Southern corps ineptitude.

This is GREAT NEWS. There is such a rich history of Open Class DCI corps from the South with strong management and a long range plan.
Tampa Bay Thunder can compete with Tar Heel Sun, the first iteration of TBT and Teal Sound to see who lasted longer.

I bet DCI is so excited to have them go through the evaluation process.

  6. If you think that will result in a large sum of revenue coming into the corps, you are sadly mistaken.

I was wrong earlier. Maybe your flavor of choice is not sour after all. More like bitter.

So Music City only made top 25 "for one day"? Was there a secret contest held late Friday night in the parking lot? Not only did I miss it, I cannot find the results anywhere. Who are the top 25 now?

Meanwhile, I think you know the difference between what I said ("can attract new sponsors") and your spin ("will magically result in new sponsors"). Try not to twist the words of others - it tends to lead to thread closures.

  7. Ahhhhh therein lies the rub young Danny from WA. They are not giving up (cue inspirational music) and these plucky upstarts will keep the corps going!

    Git 'er done.

It appears making top 25 for one day will magically result in new sponsors and funding (according to cixelsyd) and the dedicated staff that bought magic beans and grew 11 horns to over 60 can now do so with money as well.

By the way, you probably should replace "they" with "he".

As a Director of an OC corps, I feel they did it right in shutting the corps down the way they did. They knew they could not continue , so they cut it off. That gives the members plenty of opportunity to seek out another group. No promises to the staff and then have to tell them they won't get paid. It's easy to sit back and arm chair quarter back what they should or shouldn't do

  8. Look I am sure the design & teaching staffs of Music City were wonderful men & women that had the best interest of the members at heart. However, they were not good designers or teachers AS DEFINED BY THE RESULTS THE CORPS REALIZED ON THE FIELD. Ineffective does not mean a lack of commitment, it means producing less than desirable results.

    This is irrefutable.

Somebody did a good job recruiting a whole bunch of HS and college kids to march in the corps. Kudos to them.

Somebody did not do a good job writing and teaching, period. Do not kid yourself and think the other Open Class corps do not face similar challenges. The 7th Regiment has grown up in the middle of a hotbed of drum corps recruiting for World Class, Open Class and DCA corps yet still presented better written and taught programs every year with less members that Music City. Oregon took a season off and came back to move to the top of the ranks in a year. I am sure the DCI membership surveys would prove that the bulk of the Open Class are converting woodwind players to brass instruments. Ask the Raiders. They made do with a lot less.

Yes, I have attended World Championships every season that Music City participated and witnessed their performances live. Best of intentions, not so much with the results. The Music City design team & tech staff was not able to translate one of the largest (if not largest) corps on the field each season into a competitively successful one.

Did I miss a season when they were anywhere close to a medal before this season? Was the visual design strong? Could the corps march well? Play in tune?

Was the color guard EVER close to the top?

Cmon, be honest. You guys worked hard and probably impacted kids lives in a positive manner. But did you make them a good drum corps? No.

And management deserves the chance to raise that money, before we cast final judgment.

And it may be a situation where a corps grows a whole new base of funding support. They made top 25, after all. That level of success can attract new sponsors, better endorsement deals, and more tangible support from the fan base.

As for the rest of your post...

... hard to assign credibility to an anonymous poster who rips on an entire teaching staff in this manner. How am I to believe you have inside information when you make comments like that?

  9. How legit is this? Are we talking a deficit of $20,000 minus Mr. Hall's support or $50,000+?

Prospective members deserve to know the likelihood of the corps raising enough to provide for a competitive experience.

While the fundraisers may be the results of best intentions, it may be a situation where a corps has its financial guts ripped out and doesn't recover.

He started the corps with the full expectation Music City would compete in World Class. Before hitting the field they applied for WC status and were denied. Thus began the long slide into Open Class debt. Limited to no show fees can do that to a corps. The limited staff budget (resulting, up until this year, in a very ineffective teaching staff) kept the corps in the middle of the OC pack at best.

I'm sure many of you have seen this on dci.org. Opinions? Comments?

  10. If you are someone with any ties - be it official or emotional - to the Phantom Regiment organization you really should shut up.

We get that you know people there and probably aged out in the last few years. Trashing new hires by name does nothing but make you look bitter

I'm not talking about FMMs. I'm talking about recent age outs and kids who will be going back. The kids that marched last year definitely didn't like him, and they're the most important in how things proceed. Ask them yourself.

Just because I say what you don't know, don't believe, or disagree with doesn't make it wrong.
