Trumpet with Scouts. (I'll reserve Cavaliers, Vanguard, and Phantom as favorite corps.) And I want a shot at playing solo on MacArthur Park, which the staff will plug into the show after San Antonio. (It will be a mean MacArthur Park.)
Not sure that headdress is going to look quite right.
The headdress doesn't look right on any of the members so you'll fit right in.

I've been a classically trained musician for the last 30 years (piano & trombone). Understanding musical performance, styles, effects, etc., has been rather easy whether I cared for the music or not.
Understandung visual design hasn't always been as easy (other than cleanliness and multiple responsibilities). I finally got what was considered excellent in guard in the last ten years. However, it's been difficult for me to know what's good in visual design the last couple of years. Standing still while playing a difficult passage, scatter drill, and body movements seem to do well.
So...what is visual excellence currently? How does one know it when we see it?
Just look up shows from the 80's and 90's

The Cadets are on the list. Am I missing something?
The OP isn't updating anymore because of all the arguing in his thread. Waaaahhh!

Why has the original post not been updated? Why even have this thread? Why pin it if it's not properly updated?

On a completely different note - when did Boston upgrade to Yamaha drums?

I disagree. The current uniform fits the theme, and it is so meticulously designed and made. Really great uniforms.
I respectfully disagree with your opinion. It's OK - I'm an old fart. I started losing interest in DCI when they allowed synthesizers and it's been all downhill since then for me. I suppose it's inevitable that I'll eventually stop following it.

The last guard shot with the yellow silk is great!
Love the guard costumes and the flags. The rest would look better with their iconic red uniforms from like 5 years ago.

I understand that and don't disagree. I just don't feel that totally disowning your identity was the way to do it. Nothing about this show is Madison. Nothing about this show pulls the crowd to its feet, and that's weird to see.
Still believe they should of went more the Bluecoats or Blue Devils route. Shows like Tilt/Downside Up/Jagged Edge/metamorphosis would have been much better suited to reimagine the corps without sacrificing its identity. Sacrificing what made the Madison Scouts special in the first place.
Exactly! Very well said!

I guarantee that when marketed correctly, this "unpopular" direction will bring in more fans to replace the cranky old dinosaurs and then some. Stop acting like kowtowing to the old guard is crucial to the activity's survival.
You need to understand that the bastardization of an activity us old farts that have followed for 30 years or more doesn't go down easily. I'll get over it but I miss how ###### and powerful DCI drum corps used to be. It's just modern interpretive dance on a football field for the most part now. If you like that crap good for you. Evidently lots of people like the current crap and that's good for the kids that march because the activity looks like it will survive.

Dude, thats the point. Time to hit the reset button on "what is Madison".
Reset didn't need to include dropping the iconic uniform for the sloppy looking costume. This show would be better visually if the corps proper was in last year's uniform and just the guard in the silly costumes.

Thanks for posting. Not bad but it would be much better visually with last year's uniform. And now it's gone

I have not seen the show - or any others yet. I may buy the last month of flow marching just to confirm what I assume. I assume I won't see much that I like. I know I despise the "tribal" costumes and that the Madison Scouts have caved in to the "WGI-ing" of DCI. They were kinda my last hope out of the top corps but now it's all going to be broadway on a football field. That's fine for some and that's great but it's not for me. I will still make my yearly company matched donation because I think DCI is still a great experience for the marching members. It builds character and teaches the benefits of dedication. It makes kids better musicians. I just won't watch it anymore. If I see anything I like I may stick around. That's about as open minded as I can be at this point.

What's so crazy about not liking a costume that belongs on an off-Broadway stage instead of a drum corps show? It's hideous. Tell me one thing about that getup that says "Madison Scouts." I also hate SCV's new WGI outfit.
If DCI is simply going to become a bigger version of WGI, then I'm done.
I completely agree with you! I despise the WGI influence on DCI and stopped going to live shows 2 years ago. I may buy the flow marching thing for the last month just to confirm what I suspect and that's going to be my not liking it at all. At that point I will be truly done. DCI has become an artsy fartsy shadow of it's former greatness and If you don't like something you stop watching it. Will I stop donating? Probably not but we'll see. Madison caving in to the "WGI-ing" of DCI was the final straw for me.

Ya mean something newer than what's on page 16?
The OP started out posting updates to page 1 then stopped. I thought that was the whole purpose of this thread. I don't care enough to go through every page.

I see Chris just posted a video of the corps pulling out on the way to Lucas Oil stadium. Are they going to perform at the preview tonight? I might need to go if so.

Jealous here! ( To be that skinny again...)
So gloss black drums this year? That's a classy look every time. Maybe the new costume is just them going shirtless.
Who has awesome souvenirs?

Crossmen have some of the best stuff. I'm a bit biased as my sister provides them with much of their logo merchandise.
