  1. Bush has one member who has been driving down from Maine every weekend for several years now. Some years there were some Bostoners who would come down with her, but I know that the last 2 seasons she has done the drive on her own, again, EVERY weekend. And she will do the same this year as well. :) Want her to contact you? I'm sure she would enjoy some company.

    September 6, 2011

Although the 2011 finals performance is only days old, the Bushwackers are already hard at work planning for the 2012 season.

The corps has gone through many changes over the past year, and there are more changes to come as we continue to build

a bigger and better Bushwacker Drum Corps.

The Bushwackers are pleased to announce that Dennis Argul will join us in the roles of Music Arranger and Brass Caption

Manager for the 2012 season. Dennis has a long history with the Bushwackers in various capacities, and we are excited to

have him be a part of the Bushwacker family once again. Welcome back Dennis!

Stay tuned for more announcements on our website, our facebook page, and our twitter feed.

Yeah, so I'm thinking that this means that we are not leaving the party anytime soon. Thank you to the administration for getting 2012 off to a great start, and only 2 days after finals. Things are changing!!!

  3. Thank you! I really don't think anyone would believe us if we told the full story of where we really were at this year.

But 2011 is over and onto 2012... and our first order of business was just posted in the NEWS section on www.bushwackers.org. The news will be posted in short order, but go read it now.

  4. That mission does not change. That's why they're being careful about the age restriction. They WANT the DCA corps to also be a an educational activity, where the older people would take on the role of mentor-ship, etc. I'm sure that in their perfect world, the corps would be 80% age 16-22, with lots of positive influence-type people in the other 20%. If they do it right, that could part of the audition process for the older people: "How much effort are you willing to forth to foster a positive and professional experience to the younger players?"

I see no downside to this, educationally.

    1) He would love to kill Surf.

    2) This in not going to be some 80/20 thing. He has 100+ kids who won't make Cadets their first go around or ever, and this is a great way to continue to keep money flowing in. Also a great way to fill a spot mid summer.

    3) Why do Open class, which doesn't have "long-term viability" when he can do this for a fraction of the cost?

  5. Can a Not for Profit organization that is recognized by the Federal Government as such, discriminate on age ?

What if a marcher that is over their age cap and is rejected on participation because of the marchers " age " when DCA has the " All Age " division set up that presumably this new DCA Corps will be competing in. Can the Cadets2 do this, and not run afoul of Federal Statues, thus jeapordizing the entire YEA organization's tax exempt status ? (Just asking, mind you. I'm sure they've thought this all through though.)

DCA and the corps that make it up, are all private organizations, not unlike the Boy Scouts of America, whom the Supreme Court said has the right to choose its members based on its own criteria. Cadets2 can choose to restrict the age to 22, although they said they might relax it to 23/24 which probably means that we might see some of those recent age-outs/locals/ringers/screamers/add-your-adjective-right-here as they see fit to complete their show.

  6. Kidsgrove:

    1. The clever opening of the show with the clasps and stuff.

    2. The safe unlocking.

    3. The fff moments from the most powerful brassline of the night (bridgeport show).

    4. The screamer solo note from the trumpet line.

    Cabs:

All snare features. They were on fire at the 2ND bridgeport show. Cleanest snareline of the night.

Bush: The coolest field entrence ever + That killer good cymbal line was practily a show in and of themselves.

You can check them out some more on Youtube if you search Bush Plate Line.

  7. That's where I disagree with Shadow. It's not DCA's fault at all that Texas (or any other state) has difficulty getting a DCA corps together. There are just as many states that don't have a DCI or competitive Jr. Corps. that's not DCI's fault either!

We all know that DCA has these rules established and that we need to abide by them. There are options for groups who choose not to (ex: World Gone Mad, any SDCA corps, Kiwanis, Shriners, etc).

Yes, I know other groups have made it work. I've had long conversations with Vic about how he made it work in Florida. Heck, we almost marched there one year when Judy and I lived in Miami (3 hours plus $40 in tolls one-way put a quick stop to that, unfortunately).

I think the main issue is time. It takes time to build a program. When you have 7 one year, 16 the next and 40 the next, then all but 15 of those 40 leave, there's an issue (or several issues) to resolve. I think people need to realize that it's not just about building a program, it's about maintaining and growing the program. That takes time. A lot of time, and a lot of planning.

Some people may just be impatient to see it happen?

Or you find people from all the major TX cities to start a corps and then you have a Texas circuit... and then you can get the shows televised on the new UT tv station. JK on that part... kind of. Your option might be to get a few corps started in the area and then you have competition of your peers and not have to worry about DCI shows.

  8. This is how lies get started and repeated. This post is patently false. Page 41 of the proposal clearly lists the caption as "Winds", which would be one of three performance captions worth 20 points each.

Ok, but by renaming the caption winds and not just brass, that is still them saying that they wish to add woodwinds on the field and calling all the field instruments, sans battery, winds, just like a Wind Ensemble, right?

  9. SO how come they can do it on the WEST COAST only?

The Renegades and SoCal Dream compete,

    "AT"

(THE Key Word here. "AT ") a DCI show.

So can we DROP the all the DCI Corps would HAVE to be FULL TIME DCA groups. DCI groups would NOT be elegible for Championships, since they would NOT be FULL TIME DCA groups. (just as Ren's, SoCal, Minn Brass, and Reading and Other DCI Approved DCA groups are NOT allowed at DCI Championships.) The Ren's and SoCal seem to be doing JUST FINE as FULL DCA Members, yet competing "AT", DCI shows often.

But if you TRY to do that in REVERSE, anywhere else. The Sky will fall and the Human Race will go away. I guess.

By the way I do agree that " I " would not be very interested in all the "DCI" (or as I call it BCI - "Band Corps International" groups. But the QUALITY and Excellance of what they do, is there to see. Heck, if nothing else. It gives people a view of OTHER things, while STILL having the ENJOYMENT of the, what they DO like. For me. A few Alumni type groups of the Quality of Cab's and Bridgemen - + - some of my favorite DCA groups would bring me. Then too. Madison, BAC, and Troop have kept a little more of the Old Style done in a new way (No Gitars, Tables, Chairs, very little if any miked Voice and some of the other far out stuff).

Look at the map in Post #97. The reason why the West Coast corps compete at DCI show is that THEY HAVE NO CHOICE! Aside from a couple close to one another in Texas, there are no more DCA, active or inactive, west of the Mississippi. They compete against each other at DCI shows or else they would never have a competition until semis. Look at the big hoopla that was going on a couple of months ago with... I forget which corps that was supposed to go out west and the 'Gades come out here. They compete at DCI shows because otherwise, they have no competitions.

Not that I'm against dual shows. The more the merrier, more bang for the audience's buck.

My real question is why does anyone actually think that any DCI corps, either class, would even WANT to join DCA? Smaller circuits are going to rise up and there will be smaller corps created. NJ used to have a nice little circuit that all the smaller corps participated in. If they want to stay DCA or join SDCA and get people to create small circuits, and then do mini tours of a couple of weeks, they are going to do that. I don't think DCA would object to more corps wanting to join, but I really don't see DCI corps wanting to come over.

  10. Before this discussion inevitably explodes, I'd like to point this out - nowhere does this proposal (at least as described here) say that the 7 corps proposing this are the corps who would be the "top acts" spearheading this new touring model. It seems to me that the usage of the phrase "top acts" seems to imply that it'll change from year to year, or maybe every few years. Most likely, this group of 7 corps is just a group of like-minded directors who want to push this idea, not 7 directors who want to be the headliners from now on.

Also, when it comes to this quote:

"While continuing to service our ardent and supportive fan and alumni base, the group suggested a plan to better marry drum corps to scholastic music in the hope of supporting arts education, while at the same time generating an interested spectator base for the drum corps activity."

I wouldn't jump to the conclusion that that means woodwinds et al. I know we (Carolina Crown) are doing a lot of clinics and camps this summer, including the one in Normal where last year a bunch of band kids (gasp) got to learn a portion of our show, marching and playing, and perform it with us for an encore. The proposal may be referring to more of that sort of thing, as an attempt to broaden the reputation of DCI among younger kids.

I'm probably quite behind in a response to this one, however, when they say the "top 7" they aren't looking to change the group year to year. These 7 directors are creating a consortium to be able to make an additional tour to raise additional money FOR THEMSELVES! Elsewhere in that whole email it said that they want DCI to change its structure, ie. get rid of middle management positions and make the central office leaner so that it doesn't need as much money to run itself, so that more money can go to the corps, READ those same top 7. Those top 7 corps are simply looking for ways to make more money to continue to function at the level they are at. They want DCI to go on a diet so they can gorge a bit more since it's expensive to go cross country, but they'll do it for the right buck.

As for the education thing, I don't think they want to have more clinics. I think they are actually looking to get INTO local school music programs so that they can help support those programs, while using them as a direct feeder for the best talent. In the end, it is all about what is best for those "top 7" corps, so that THEY can continue to function. That being said, I think the whole enhanced educational component could be a good thing. Anything to draw attention to the programs to help keep them alive, unlike what is about to happen in NJ, is a good thing. And if those seven corps get something out of it for themselves, so be it. Call it a possible, POSSIBLE, healthy symbiotic relationship.

  11. Ok, so I am not sure if this is a predictions thread, but since I have seen the obligatory "whoever scores highest will win," I am going to assume that it is:

    Open Class

    1) Bucs (my pick until someone knocks them off)

    2) Empire

    3) MBI

    4) Cabs (I could see them placing as low as 6th, but I do not think so)

    5) Hurcs (I think their always strong guard will edge them over Alliance)

    6) Alliance

    7) Kidsgrove Scouts (they will be smaller than some around them, but will have a lot more rehearsal time)

    8) Corpsvets

    9) Renegades

    10)Bush

    Class A

    1) Vigilantes

    2) Govenaires

    3) Sun Devils

    4) Grenadiers

The coordination and administrative changes alone in Bush are so dramatically improved from last year to this, that coupled with an amazing book, Bush will be Top 5.
