  1. I know it technically fits their show theme and all, but what exactly is the point to all of that detail that nobody will ever see? You may as well just post a picture of a plain blue drum.

What's the point of all of those wood grain drums that you can't see from a distance. They might as just post a picture of a <insert stain color here> drum.

  2. I take it you have never worked on a corps' kitchen trailer before. The kitchen trailer is already fully utilized preparing 200+ meals 4 times per day to feed the corps. There is no bandwidth to produce another meal. Most corps struggle to find volunteers to staff the kitchen trailer as it is. this would stretch these volunteers even further. Folks volunteering on the kitchen trailer have the hardest job on tour. They are up before everyone else to get breakfast ready, and htey are typically the last ones down at night, after cleaning up after hte 4th meal.

Further, the kitchen trailer is at the housing site preparing the 3rd meal of hte day before the kids head to teh show - the trailer cannot be at the show site preparing food for attendees.

Lastly, compliance with health codes is complicated when you involve mobile kitchen trailers. If the corps is not locally based and has not been inspected, it cannot serve food for concessions without undergoing a review and certification first. This is not practical when you consider the number of states the corps will trqavel through over the course of a summer.

Interesting idea, but wholly impractical, if not impossible, to pull off.

    Well said and entirely accurate.

  3. well, looking on the bright side of things, at least we'll be playing on a brand new brassline :)

can't wait for the audition camp

Well said, wise young trumpet. Many exceptional world class brass lines over the years have played on instruments that were a pieced together, hodgepodge of any piece of metal that could be made to resemble an instrument. I would have loved to play on new brass. The closest I ever came to that was using my own new mouthpiece.

  4. With the Blue Stars scoring 91.9 for 8th place this past weekend they have set the Highest 8th Place score mark at DCI beating the previous mark of 91.5 set in 1992 by the Phantom Regiment

Congratulations Blue Stars on an outstanding Season.

Thank you Phil. That is an interesting stat about the 8th place score but, thank you for congratulating the Blue Stars.

I really did appreciate the efforts of every member of every corps this year. In spite of possibly hotter than average summer temperatures, every DCI member should be proud to have been part of an above average year for all corps. I think the scores this year may actually reflect that. I also want to say that I love how the Bluecoats perform. The Bluecoats had a great show to perform this year and every time I saw them, they made it even better by giving 100%. Congratulations Bluecoats on an outstanding season!

  5. Cavies horn line is good this year, but the run so much it affects their playing. If they can get their feet under them, build some endurance, and continue to clean they will be in good shape.... But we will see if they can do all of that....

I agree except the section running is rarely the one playing!

  6. I think the color is actually a shade of blue/gray.

Now that's funny, I don't care who you are!!!!!

That is funny. Having seen the uniforms a few times, the grey color does seem to vary quite a bit depending on the lighting conditions. Even the star on the front stands out more or less depending on the light. I do like the blue satin around the collar.

I love the Blue Stars show and am hoping to see it live again soon. Given the Houdini theme, I can't help but wonder what surprises of color, sound and movement they still have to add.

This is a great year for drum corps. All the corps seem to have stepped up their game and are presenting some very entertaining shows for us to experience and support this year. I try to remind myself when I don't really care for a corps' uniforms or show that the performers don't have a say on either. The students involved in drum corps are exceptional and I hope they're all proud to wear their corps' uniform and perform their show.

  7. this is based on the FN vid, so take it for what it's worth.

I like the first number. It has a Philip Glass thing going. Maybe that's because it actually is Philip Glass, although I thought it sounded more like Koyaanisqqatsi than The Hours.

After that, it gets kind of repetitive musically. A lot of loud, angry dissonance without much dynamics or phrasing. The Illusionist music doesn't really fit stylistically. Glass and Adams have a lot of interesting and complex harmonies that the film music lacks.

Technically, I think they have a long way to go before they march or play as well as Cavaliers. I like the fact that they play the horns with energy, but it gets edgy and out of control too often. Cavaliers seem to play with more control and finesse, not to mention better intonation. Cavaliers also have a smoother, more refined marching style despite being fairly dirty as an ensemble.

Compared to Madison, I think Scouts brass is more restrained, but also more musical - better phrasing and dynamics. The brass and percussion work more as an ensemble. With Blue Stars, they seem to be fighting each other. I felt like there were a number of ensemble break downs in the battery. To me, Madison's show is also more engaging, probably because the music is more familiar.

Blue Stars show is technically demanding, and they will probably get credit for their aggressive style. Those two factors could take them a long way. But I don't see them catching Cavaliers, and if Madison gets cleaner they could close the gap.

Huh. Trying really hard to justify your bias.
