  1. They sparked VERY well at the August Toledo show...they were on fire - very entertaining. I submit that they've been underscored this season -

I think they were scored about right. Great and entertaining show (where I actually found myself humming the tunes post-show), but the fact remains there was tons of dirt in the feet that translated directly to the hornline sound and guard collective. Drumline was about where they usually are in the pack.

Also, as per the "big names" topic:

Everyone keeps mentioning the "Texas talent pool" and how Crossmen should be easily in the top 12 with that talent to choose from, but almost always people forget that MANY Texas kids would rather go to out-of-state corps (myself as example) because of being a long-time fan/having a long-time dream of marching somewhere.

  2. Blah blah back in my day blah

shortened up your post for ya. I feel bad for you, truthfully that you can no longer enjoy an activity as enriching and precise as this. I hope you find something you like again someday.

And don't EVEN tell me "old" fans leaving the activity is a tragedy. They will be replaced, easily, ten-fold. If you could see the area I live in and how many band kids convert to Drum Corps-ism DAILY you would know dci is alive and well. Will be for a LONG time commin...

Also this isn't flamebait (at least any more than booing is...)

  3. LOL for sure! And kudos to a great Cavie Corps and Bloooo too!

Amen. At the beginning of the season, who REALLY though those two would be where they are? Both have kicked butt and taken names.

Kudos to the new Bloo high score. I hear you get an extra life when you break the high score, so maybe next year will be an even BIGGER turn of events? :)

  4. Last night at LOS we witnessed a remarkable performance by Star of Indiana. For my family it was a particularly emotional moment as my son aged out and stood face to face on the field with the legendary SOI brass and was serenaded with “When you wish upon a star”…(hard to even type that now without blubbering).

Hidden among all the pageantry of that moment as we witnessed a seemingly unending Standing O for these remarkable people who brought so much to this great art form we love, was the close ups of the SOI members with tears streaming down their faces. LOS continued to erupt and (IMHO) collectively said, “We now know what you were trying to say to us then, and thank you for it!” To quote Michael Boo from an article in 2003: “It (93’ Star) was so different from anything anyone had ever seen, everyone was left with years of internal and external debate and evaluation of what they had just witnessed. Which to me is the very quality of the proverbial ‘wonder.”

I have no proof of this, but as I watched a 40-something guard member weeping, (wiping tears, putting her head down and looking up again quickly to be sure what she was seeing was true), I thought: “What if the last thing she heard nearly a quarter century ago after her final performance with Star of Indiana was the echo of a boo?” Now she has come full circle and all that she wanted then…. was right in front of her now. An emotional head-on collision….and good for her ....and good for us for letting her know!

So here we are again, at a time when drum corps might be at one of those “game changing” moments. For me, this isn’t about outcome tonight (who wins is now in the hands of the corps and the judges)…it’s about "seeing" these kids on the field 25 years from now (just like we did SOI last night) and knowing that we treated them with the greatest respect and appreciation, no matter who wins!

THANK YOU! This is truly what it boils down to. People will argue placements and details until the day is over but the fact of the matter is that these kids are getting a quality education and memories to last a lifetime. I saw friends of mine on the feed of the age-out ceremony. Manly tears were shed.

Tonight we celebrate, but remember that they have come far and overcame a lot to be there. Cheer like never before :)

  5. Well, we are a band that marches.....

:) They have a point here...

When explaining it to people who have never been in the activity, I just say "it's a summer long marching band with big audiences."

As per the OP, I would say he's covered the bases on hatred. Can't think of many other ways to hate people... Haters gonna hate. Honkers gonna honk. Just keep doing what you're doing and the kids will continue to entertain us. Can't wait for results tonight...

  6. Isn't the guard member in gold at the end of Phantom's show this year the same person who was Spartacus' love interest who had her throat slashed? If so, has she come back from heaven to lead Phantom to the promised land?

WHY DID I NOT CATCH THIS! THIS IS GENIUS!

I was wondering this myself. I am now UTTERLY in love with that end. Gorgeous.

  7. Our theater in Dallas had no real problems. A bit of fuzz midway but it quickly cleared up. I LOVE how the commentators told it like it is. Everyone was loving it. Also, the theater I was at was MOSTLY high school students. About 90/10 to older people (I saw a thread earlier about that).

ONE MO' THING: Did anyone else see the guard guy who ran into the shot of the pit with a huge cheesy smile on his face? Forgot the corps but he had red stuff around his eyes. Our theater cracked up.

  8. From one of the twitter accounts: please look at the photo, and notice the staff member (I assume) wearing the red shirt right against the white Cadets wall on the right 28 yard line.

Then please tell me why this one person is ruining a visual moment for the rest of the corps? Staff people do NOT belong on the field. I've always liked Cadets for their professionalism and for NOT doing just this sort of thing.

    It's ridiculous.

It was some guy that lost a bet.
