  1. Let me try this in a short, list:

    1. The Cavaliers without a doubt have the most entertaining show- but I realize their brass and drums are not in the top spots.

    2. Phantom will win Drums easy at finals- I called it from the stands in Dallas. They are on another level.

    3. I would rather sit through 7 or 8 other corps shows before seeing the Blue Devils again. I applaud them for trying something different, but I think they are trying to appeal to the judges much more than the average DCI fan. There is very little reaction from the fans in the stands, as opposed to a few other corps.

    4. Is anyone else getting sick of the same old drum visuals? The "Snorting a line of coke" visual, and the more perverted one involving a pair of female legs...I'll stop there. Grow up!

    5. What happened to the Mandarins? Never have I seen such lack of improvement in a season....

    6. The Cadets are BACK. Love them this year.

    7. The Blue Knights are headed in the right direction- they have one of the best moments in any show this year (ballad)

    8. I am getting a bit sick of the introductions in the first piece of music. Come out, get announced, and then play!

    9. The movements in the drum solos are getting a bit redundant and familiar.

Living in Cali, I get to see the Mandarins several times each year, and I always end up really liking them! I understand where they fall in the rankings, but I am always entertained by them, and always like their show! I think their colorguard costumes are so beautiful and they will continue to be a corps I look forward to watching.

Oh, and I agree with you about the drum solo movements........

  2. I usually just sit quietly and observe the comments on the DCP forum; however, as you can tell by my name, I am familiar with BDB and to just set the record straight with your comment that "BDB are large and quite a higher caliber than any of the corps...and therefore, should not be competing against them", During the past 6 years, BDB has been recruiting and trying to improve their membership numbers and have been very successful with this. The off season is spent at band competitions [/b]recruiting for new members. After winning the championship last year, more than 50% of the members either did not return this year or have moved on to World class corps. This year, the BDB membership consists of about 50% new members, most of which have never done drum corps. Their success can be attributed to the members' commitment and talent, and an excellent instructional and management staff. BDB had to work just as hard as any other open class corps to reach the caliber they are at, and perhaps it was just luck that the corps this year consists of such talented young adults, but luck or not, give them the credit they so deserve. I do not believe a championship will just be handed to them, they are working towards it just like any of the other Open Class Corps.

I wonder..... do most Open Class corps spend the off season recruiting new members at band competitions? Or do most rely on open auditions? Does BDB approach kids from the more competitive bands at these competitions? Interesting strategy, if this is the case. Perhaps such recruiting is common practice among the other OC corps. It would be interesting to know.....

  3. I am fairly new to this activity. And I really, really love it. But, my understanding of what DCI offers..... is not simply music/performances for the masses, (or joe six-pack), but rather something much, much more. Another level of entertainment. Music for the masses, (or joe), is what, (I thought), college marching bands are for. DCI represents, (to me), performances that are more sophisticated, diverse, and even challenging. I am truly amazed at what all these creative teams give us. But, I am most thankful for the shows that are a departure from the recognizable. I guess I am in the minority, but I love the dark, dissonant, challenging, "uncomfortable" music and composers. And, I love the way the visual and drill supports that kind of music. It's all so interesting and beautiful in its own way, (and entertaining).

To expect "all things in moderation" sounds so vanilla to me. Art and music and creative expression should never be about moderation, IMHO. I can find many things to like about all the shows this year, but shows like BD's and SCV's are the very kind that will keep me interested and coming back for more!

    Just my thoughts........

  4. People, people, people!

In Rockford we give EVERYONE a standing ovation!

Even the Racine Scouts get a standong 'O'.

We have a lot of drum Corp vets and it shows.

We teach the rest of the crowd to stand for every Corp.

SVC was good .... But please don't make it sound like they got the only ovation!

Thanks to ALL corps for a great show tonight

    The weather was perfect!!!

I'm sorry. I don't think I implied that at all. I fully expected there were enthusiastic reactions for all. Just happy for SCV tonight.

  5. My son is marching SCV this year - mello. Do you have a child in Vanguard as well? Great score for SCV tonight - stoked for them!

Yes! My son is in the battery! I'm so happy for SCV tonight. My son said they got a standing ovation. I think maybe people are starting to "get" the show? I hope so. I think it's a beauty!

  6. Nooooooooooo!

I am hoping the weather systems make a hard move south and leave TCF alone!

    But anyway...

I happened to be driving past Roseville High School with my 7-year-old after picking him up from daycamp at about 5:00pm and lo and behold, Santa Clara Vanguard was practicing (in the 90+ degree heat no less). I was so pumped! I made him come with me and watch!

Can't wait to see the changes to the ending!!! Go get 'em SCV!!!!!

  7. I think SCV's show is good enough. It's different.... and amazing. Honestly, (and I know I am in the minority here), I was a little underwhelmed by the Cadets show the other night in Denver. I was expecting so much more, (their 2009 WSS was one of my favorites!). It was well-performed, but did not really hold my interest. I watched it again the next day because I thought I must have missed something. Nope. And the giggle and little boy character kind of made me cringe. It must just be me, because sooo many people really love Cadet's show.

I guess I prefer something a little out-of-the-norm. I love SCV's source music and show design. It's like a breath of fresh air. I know they have to clean, and there is more to come, (changes, plus pre-show). But, I really hope they surprise the nay-sayers come August. Meanwhile..... I'll just keep loving and enjoying this unique show!

  8. I have to say, for me.... this show has been pretty awesome from first viewing at Stanford. I so love the source music, and once again, I think Vanguard gives us a super-classy, sophisticated interpretation of a great piece of music. I can't wait to see how it evolves. I've heard some exciting/interesting changes are coming!

  9. Yay!! First post! And I am soooo happy to be able to say, in my very first post..... Congrats Santa Clara Vanguard on your night!! I am a big, big fan of your Bartok show!! (also, I believe SCV passed up Phantom Regiment tonight?? Is that correct??)
