  1. 2015 Rule Change

The DCI BOD is currently reviewing potential rule changes for 2015. There seems to be several but the one that I find most interesting is the “Expansion and Enhancement of Visual Protocol”. This rule change is focused primarily on the visual component but can also affect other captions. Under the purposed rule change, each competing Corps will be allowed to bring up to 6 semi trucks on to the field to use for props, theatrics, additional electronics and wild and/or farm animals.

As one Corps Director said, “If you like what we are doing now with all this stuff, wait to you see what we can roll out there with 6 Semis”. The sky is really the limit; I was thinking perhaps this might enable the use of many exciting elements from the Circus or Cage Fighting. The creative possibilities are endless. As another influential BOD member put it “We have really just scratched the surface with changing this art from and you just wait, in a few years you won’t even recognize it”. Tru Dat!

I don’t know about you but I am so done with Massive Brass lines just blowing your face off and a Drum line that rocks like a machine of rhythm and precision. The old days of straight forward talent simply making your jaw drop are finally over with. I for one can’t believe we had to wait this long to create some unrecognizable thing that for reasons not understood by me is called a Drum and Budge Corps.? WTF is that all about.

Anyway I hope you are all as excited as I am with respect to the “Expansion and Enhancement of Visual Protocol” More Cow Bell? Hell I say More Chairs, Trampolines and Bigger and Bigger Stages. First Corps to use Dancing Elephants wins my vote.

  2. DCI today is adults judging adults. It is not the marchers that are being judged anymore in competition that primarily generates the scores and placements. Not really. ( thats a passe false myth now.. that no longer holds true, as its time has come and gone.. despite the fact that in my observations, few want to acknowledge this, it seems to me ).

Let me provide us an example. The Cavaliers finished 3rd in 2011, but had a 1 year drop of 5 places to 8th in 2012 to finish 8th.

Raise your hand here if you believe The Cavaliers Corps had less overall marcher talent in their Corps in 2012 than in 2011 ?

Raise your hand here if you believe the Cavaliers Corps overall had more marchers that worked less harder in 2012 than in 2011?

Raise your hand here if you believe that the Cavaliers Corps overall had more marchers that worked less smarter in 2012 than 2011 ?

Well, from looking around the room, it seems to me that noone has their hands raised. I'll assume then that we are all on the same page here on DCP that the 2012 Cavaliers Corps had veteran talent, that they worked just as hard, and worked just as smart, as the 2011 Cavaliers Corps. So why did they fall so quickly and so deeply in 1 year by 5 placement positions ?

Well we know why. The Cavaliers lost long time Visual Show Designer, Michael Gaines, thats why.. Raise your hand here if you believe that the 2012 Cavaliers Corps that finished in 8th place would have done so if Gaines did the Show Design in 2012 ? I know, I know, its a stupid question. ( Of course they would not have ).

So, what do reasonable and intelligent people conclude from this ? Well, that its the Adult Show Designers that have more bearing on placements than the marchers do. Its not logically possible and rational to believe that The Cavaliers could have saved themselves from plummeting 5 placement positions from 2011 to 2012, unless we want to go back and change our minds on my 3 questions above in the first paragraph, and raise our hands on those 3 questions, and thus believe that it was the youthful marchers in competition that were responsible for the judged competition plummet of 5 placement positions from 2011 to 2012.

This observation is simply not true. The placement of a Corps is a result of the composite. Program, Design, Member Talent effort and execution as well as the instructional methods etc. IF Corps placement was purely a result of the “Adult Staff” then the following would also be true.

    1. You could take all the member from the Blue Stars put them in Crown last year and hey still would have been DCI Champions. This is obviously not true
    2. You could replace all of the members of Troopers with the members from BD and they still would have not made 2013 finals. Also not true

Certainly the design team, staff, and program all make a difference but change the performers and the results will also change. Do not underestimate how important the performers are!

  3. Let be start by saying I never pull for BD. I dislike their program approach and have for many years. My entire Drum Corps past has been with SCV and I naturally root against the Devils.

Tonight’s percussion score will determine if Crown has any chance of being named DCI Champion.

If BD maintains the percussion spread over Crown tonight, there is no chance Crown will come out on top tomorrow. If two judges give BD a +1 point spread in percussion on two consecutive nights, the 3rd judge is highly unlikely to see it drastically differently on the 3rd consecutive performance. Yes they could narrow the spread but if you are at all objective the statistics say BD is going to win. Yes there are years in the past when the unexpected happened, it’s just very unlikely. If you are holding out for one of these events (and if SCV was in your position I would be) fine. Just realize it a low probability.

Tonight is very important for Crown. If Crown’s percussion can gain maybe .3 tenths tonight and another .3 tomorrow night then you can see a path to victory. If not, its game over. So again this is Crowns most import show of the year and will determine their fate.

    This is just IMHO.

Go Crown and Spoke those stupid poles

SCV. Let’s see how many Babies you can get thrown from the Stands!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

BD Congratulations on yet another real sleeper of a show. So sad to see how so much talent is misused. Imagine if they used it to Rock the Drum Corps World with a kick A%$ program.

  4. It sure seems to me that there is quite a bit more suspense at the tops this year than others. If you take the past 10 seasons.... there was a clear favorite going into finals on nearly all of them. The only ones I would say that were significantly in doubt were 2007 (because Cadets had recently beaten BD a few times) and 2008 (because PR had such momentum). Even in 2011, Cadets were clearly separating themselves from the pack those last few nights. I would say Crown has a better chance in winning than Regiment did in 2008 (based on the entire season) and about an equal chance with Cadets in 2007 (who only lost Semi's by 0.05).... of course we'll see what happens tonight.

Just to be clear, my perspective was not in relation to years gone by

  5. :worthy:/>

Why would you feel compelled to think you should or could tell people what opinion to have (I think it is brilliant,. Y'all need to stop complaining, get your head out of the "drum corps box" and start looking at this medium as more than just good band like it used to be). And you also what to tell others how they should or should not view Drum Corps? Really ? So nice to see how open minded to other perspectives you are. Can I assume you’re still single. LOL

  6. And then there were two. Some level of suspense remains between BD and Crown however a Crown title seems remote. The 1.0 percussion deficient has been more or less consistent all year and will not been decreased a significant amount in <48 hours. If BD performs as they have, and as you would expect, Crown will have to wait another year to potentially capture the DCI title.

As for the Cadets, they are simply not in the running for the title. Overall they trail BD by 1.1 and are placing 4th in Visual (.85 behind BD). They can narrow the gap but winning a title is no longer in the cards for the Cadets.

    NO matter the placement,

Santa Clara can go home with the title of most improved and at least tide with Crown for Fan Favorite. (If not the outright winner). It seems unlikely they will catch the Cadets for a medal. However,They have now placed themselves in the conversation as a future title contender which up to this point has not been the case. The Sanford trophy is clearly undecided and SCV has a great opportunity here. It probably comes down to who controls the sheet.

At the end of the day, we place too much importance on placement derived from the un-quantitative Opinion of 8 judges. The accuracy of a judge to score 150 performers for over 12 minutes, IMO cannot be accurately resolved to tenths of a percent. It’s just an educated opinion and the only method we have. Yes drum corps needs competition and a winner has to be selected. It’s cool to win and drives the organizations and the activity, we just need to keep it all in perspective.

Thanks to ALL OF the Corps for a fantastic 2013. We may not like all of the artistic direction of the programs. We may all ##### and moan about narration, electronics and the judging system but this is their time, not ours. We did our thing and we should let them do theirs. Hell if you don’t like it, don’t worry, it will continue to evolve. And if you still don’t like it, go do something else or start you own Corps.

Yes fan support is very import for the activity however Drum Corps is first about the marching members. No members, no program and then no fans. I am certain that even with narration, electronics and blab la bla, every member of every Corps had a life changing experience and one that will shape who they are and who they become. For me, This is what Drum Corps is about.

  8. Wasn't going to post here for a while but this one caught me....

So what would be your response to an non-American talking about the F&*^ing American Flag...

Seriously after reading your sig, you;re not representing SCV well at all....

Guess no one told you to get respect, show respect....

Please have a nice day and enjoy all 2013 Drum Corps has to offer.

  9. ...and it doesn't even have to be only champions, I suppose. I'm just curious to see what others think about this topic. Where would the "Top 5 Most Legendary Shows" fall? Could any corps from 1972-2007 be crowned champion based on the way shows are judged today (not to mention the intense competition within the Top 12, this year in particular)?

In terms of recent years, I think Cadets '05 still stands up pretty well, as does Cavies '02. I can't really convince myself that any show prior to 2002 could win it all today...

    ...MAYBE Star '93...

    Thoughts?

This might be the dumbest thread ever on DCP

  10. I just looked at captions, and not a single percussion section is scoring in the same place as the rest of their corps. There's a few close ones, like Coats (Percussion +1), Blue Stars (Percussion +1) and Cavies (Percussion -1), but there's others like Phantom (Percussion +5) and Santa Clara (Percussion -3) and even Blue Devils (Percussion -3). Why is there such a disconnect between all of these corps and their percussion sections?

I'm just wondering how these corps feel about that. I mean, it's gotta suck for Phantom's percussion section, who's got a legitimate shot at best in the world, but the rest of their corps is holding them back, and a corps like Blue Devils, who could potentially lose to Bluecoats, purely based on percussion despite how the rest of the corps does.

    1) Ok so a football team with a great offense also just by that fact has a great defense

  11. It might be painful and risky, but perhaps it might be time to call it a day as far as DCI goes. The lower echelon corps have become nothing more than a supporting cast for the top 7. They get inferior housing, travel further, expend more $ and diesel just getting to shows, and receive comparatively little compensation, along with having their ranks raided for top talent every year.

    1) No one travels further than SCV and BD

    2) The top Corps just hold audtions, they dont "Raid" the lower corps

    3) Maybe we should just prevent kinds in lower Corps from the opportunity to march where they want

    4) Many of the top corps today at one time were lower leverl corps. They all spent 30-40 years getting to where they are. Check out where SCV abd BD's came from.

  12. I don't get it. Are the big corps hurting for talent on the brass lines? Hopkins is always trying to up the age limits... I'm also surprised he straight out was calling for woodwinds. I didn't realize he was being that direct about it.

But wouldn't the better solution to all the expenses and demand for talent be to simplify? Eliminate electronics and amps and you save equipment money, transportation money, and you need fewer staff. Cut back to a smaller corps size you save a ton in food, instruments, and uniforms. Make props illegal, and remove the temptation to add that expense.

    Most of this would suck
