  1. No grief from me - just made me want to catch Blue Knights. That's the kind of reaction I have to many props - by the time you've looked at them for 7 minutes they can't possibly live up to the build-up. Funny that this one literally deflates...

Pretty sure it is not meant to deflate. The person sitting next to me said well I guess there is an end to that ball. I like Blue Knights and love they are one of the few corps to come to Washington. Just was so distracted by the ball. On the other hand was so happy to see Cascades are not using props this year!!! I am not big on props on the field.

  2. I am probably going to get a lot of grief about this but personally I find the big balloon ball Blue Knights drag around the field very distracting. I spent most of their show watching the ball waiting for it to pop and missed out on enjoying everything else that was on the field. It didn't help that by the end of the show it was half deflated.

  3. You mentioned the " bad economic environment in this country. Ok. Maybe the rich in this country should put together a proposal that would only allow people over a certain income level be allowed to vote. Afterall, they are the " consistently successful ", and the poor and the middle class should " listen to their input from the successful" by simply relinquising their right to vote to them. For example, one has to make an income of $300,000 per year. If you don't make that sort of yearly income,... and " consistently"... could the rich count on YOU to give up your right to vote ? to them ? Would you vote to give UP your right to vote ?

I love this comparison!!!! As a country we would never let this pass, why would we be ok with it in our favorite activity.

  4. I can't remember a year where I would want to re-watch so many corps on the Fan Network and BluRay/DVD. It's easy to find great things in all of them, no matter where they placed or where I thought they should place.

Blue Devils: Thanks for putting out a production that never bored me for a second. It's one of maybe 3 shows I can say that about in DCI history.

Carolina Crown: Thanks for performing my favorite brass book in 20 years. Simply phenomenal.

Phantom Regiment: Thanks for the awesome arrangement of Turnadot. Takes a special group to put that together and pull it off in performance.

Cadets: Thanks for all of the simultaneous music and marching, and once again taking music I usually loathe and making it into something I looked forward to hearing.

SCV: Thanks for demonstrating that you're ready to hit the big time again. I feel a 96-99 buildup coming on.

Bluecoats: Thanks for putting out a brilliant production, and easily my favorite ballad of the year. Stunning.

BAC: Thanks for doing Mahler 1! I've been waiting for so long for somebody to do it, and it was wonderful. Loved how polished the whole production was.

Cavaliers: Thanks for pumping up the brass amplitude, especially the trumpets. I foresee better things for you next year.

Madison: Thanks for the blend of sophistication and power. Loved the arrangement of Pictures mixed with a bunch of DCI classics.

Blue Knights: Thanks for the unique take on a drum corps staple piece like Firebird. Some of my favorite visual ideas of the year out there.

Spirit: Thanks for the amazing brass sound. Loved the arrangement and performance of all of the Guys and Dolls stuff you played.

Crossmen: Thanks for putting out your best production in many years. Pop music CAN work, and you showed it. Loved the buildup to the maltese cross impact, and the soft ending!

Blue Stars: Thanks for taking some visual risks. Beastly drill that you performed the heck out of, and a fun arrangement of New World.

Glassmen: Thanks for doing an awesome piece like Saint-Saens' Organ Symphony justice. Hard to imagine a better fit for that piece in a show.

Academy: Thanks for the performance quality when attempting such a challenging show. I got tired just watching all of the simultaneous visual demand with that brass book.

Pacific Crest: I didn't see this until semifinals for some reason. I was surprised by the sophistication of the program, and the performance level. Future looks promising. Can't wait.

Colts: Thanks for the whole show, but especially the last 5 minutes. Something special going on there with the buy in of the performers. Could tell they were loving performing that.

Troopers: Thanks for taking a big risk with a show rep that seemed pretty uncharacteristic for you. Copland's lesser known stuff is some great music, and really hard to pull off. Well done!

Jersey Surf: Thanks for doing what you want to do, having a great time doing it, and inviting the audience in to enjoy it right along with you.

Mandarins: Thanks for the preview of the new unis, first of all. :) I liked the visual program a lot and the music was fun.

Cascades: I was impressed by the improvement from the beginning of the season to the end in all captions. I wasn't expecting it to grow that much. Great things to come for you guys. Love, a native Washingtonian.

Pioneer: Thanks for telling a story but staying focused on some great music. Easily my favorite musical production from you guys in years, and a great peformance!

I love how positive this is! So refreshing after a wonderful season.

  5. Have you discussed this with the band director you currently work with? Because marching one more year would increase your abilities and broaden your exposure to different techniques and styles, you may be worth more to him/her than you are now. Are you sure they'll replace you permanently, or just temporarily until you return? It's hard to make the final decision without knowing the answers to these questions, so ask!

As far as my gut reaction, I did not march my age-out. Considering my experience in my next-to-age-out corps, I probably could have gone and marched anywhere I wanted, but I didn't. I've regretted it for over 30 years. I did return to instruct, I've marched in an all-age, taught an all-age and founded/directed an all-age...but it wasn't may junior corps age-out.

    Do it.

    Garry in Vegas

This is what I would say to my child: "Never do anything you will regret for the rest of your life." Only you can answer if you don't march will you regret it. If the answer is yes then do what ever it is you need to so you can have that experience, and the rest of life will fall into place.

  6. Some bonehead on Twitter is trying to make the argument that Cascades show borders on racism...dearest God

hhhhmmm wonder if the bonehead realizes that the snare who is from Japan probably would not have spent the money to fly from Japan to Washington for every camp and to tour with them if he felt there was racism in the show. He also probably would not have brought things for the show back with him from Japan either. I would say the bonehead has no idea about Shinto either.

  7. My point was people complain about singing and voice overs on the field so using your logic they shouldn't have vocal in I&E cause it isn't old school drum corps. For the record I do not feel that woodwinds belong on the field or should ever become part of drum corps. ( I also hate seeing props and voice overs on the field). But I&E is separate just because DCI puts it on does not mean it should be only drum corps talents. It is designed for members to show off there talents and have a little bit of a break different from what they are doing on the field. You used dance as an example of what else shouldn't be allowed at I&E, but what Guard on the field does not include some aspect of dance into their drill? So once again by what you are saying because it is already part of drum corps it should be part of I&E?

  8. Whether true or not, I interpreted DCI's inclusion of woodwinds in I&E events as a push towards getting people to accept woodwinds on the field. Whether true or not, I interpret small participation in I&E woodwind events as a referendum on DCI incorporating woodwinds in the future.

To be snarky..... Are you also afraid that by having vocals at I&E that will lead to singing and voice overs too?

  9. Here's a video of DCI's fastest drummer this year. First time he gets very close to the record, and second time he breaks it.

I can't figure out how to embed it, sorry! I wrapped it in the [ media] tag, but it's not showing up. Anyone?

Thank you for catching that on video many people have been asking if someone got it on tape.

Can't believe Greg dropped his stick and still beat it!

  10. That is...if they actually HAD health inspectors in China!

It is actually an open-air market in Beijing. I have some other pics of equally as 'ewwwy' stuff-they-call-food my daughter took in 2011.

My daughter just came back from 18 days in Japan...one thing she did eat was an octopus-on-a-stick with a quail egg inserted into its head...

My son just moved back from Japan and he said that octopus-on-s-stick is fantastic!

But then again he will eat anything.......

  11. What? Are you nuts??? :w00t:

Oh well, it's your choice, and besides, it's too late now to take her to a nice dinner and have a romantic evening. Now all she's got to look forward to is a hotdog at the stadium and 6 hours of sitting on bleachers, coming home with a sore back, and stinking from sweating in the hot sun all day.

Anyway, be sure and post here again in about 6 months and tell us how you did in the divorce settlement. That's assuming you give up a car to get the computer, so you can keep posting on DRUM CORPS PLANET!

You've got to have priorities, right?

UUUUUMMMMMMM I would rather watch drum corps show like this than a romantic dinner, you can do dinner anytime.

  12. I'm beginning to wonder if any of you have ever dealt with a band parent... or a soccer mom even. Craziest people out there. I'm not surprised by any of this at all. These are major league band parents you're talking about. Especially with it being a younger corps. I hope none of these parents are parents of age outs. CUT THE CORD! devil.gif

yes have dealt with many on a few different levels and most of us are crazy on some level. I always said that is where our kids get their passion and they have just directed it towards music.

  13. The facebook page is a #### wasteland right now. There is nothing of any use being said aside from updates on the progress of getting the members home. It's wholly depressing. The parents have every right to be angry, and for the reasons they're claiming. However this is all still in the 'who do I kill?' stage in the parents minds. When the members are home, or placed in other corps I hope it settles down, and the board feels that they can release information to a level headed audience.

Just wanted to make sure I was reading this right, The are claiming that the corps or someone in the corps stole the money from what I read. Are you seriously saying you believe this to be true? I really do not believe this more that the parents screaming wheres all the money have no idea how much it costs to take a corps on tour. Yes it is upsetting to all that this happened but some of the parents posting need to behave like adults not toddlers throwing a temper tantrum. Wait till the facts come out not just make accusations. If it turns out that there was miss management of funds then blast, but know what you are talking about first!

  14. IMO we have REALLY jumped the gun here!

We need to start with one FACT FIRST!

Did Teal's finances CAUSE the bus problem

    OR

Did the bus problem cause the financial problem?

    BIG DIFFERENCE between the two!

Not many corps have the money to fill TWO bus contracts in one year!!!

I'm thinking that possibly the bus contracting company or the drivers did not understand that this was more than a trip to Massachusetts - and bailed out of the contract leaving Teal having to come up with more contract money.

How would you plan financially for THAT?

The same way Cascades should of planed on there equipment truck being rear ended last year, YOU CAN'T. You can have a emergency fund but does that ever have enough in it to cover something major?

I have also been thinking (correct me if wrong) by missing a show because of the bus problem doesn't that mean they also lost performance money too? Doesn't every penny on tour count.

I do agree that until we have facts about what happened it is all just rumor, and speculation.
