  1. I'm just thinking back to the early 2000s of DCA and then relating it today. I don't think I ever once back then wanted to own a personal recording of any lines or shows back then, but today I find myself wishing I had taken my camera to a few of the shows I went to. There are parts of at least three corps shows (percussion specifically) this year that I wish I could have handy with me for when I'm just about to power down at work or hanging around with drum corps on my mind.
  2. I don't dislike Empire. I even said watching lines play clean is fun in it's own right. I've never once discredited them. I just prefer the Buccs and Hurcs style of demand and simultaneous responsibility. I will never put down a corps that achieves as well as Empire does.
  3. What a great night in Scranton. Was anyone else there? There HAD to have been some other drum-heads there (awful pun intended). Sorry Secaucus folks, it was a little too wet out there for my liking! I don't think it's fair at this point in time, as fans, to review a corps based on their performance because on any given night, any given line can have a great or a terrible show. So I'll give my opinions based on structure and the level of performance I've seen each percussion section at consistently throughout the year. Cabs... I was hoping they would progress as the season went on but with all of the stuff they have dealt with, it looks like they never got the time necessary to make that battery what it could have been. Snare line is ridiculously clean and they play a LOT. Same with the bass drums. The tenor section leaves something to be desired but like I said, there isn't much they can do at this point. I think the book was a little over their heads and maybe a little dense in certain spots. All of that being said, their front ensemble was one of the best in the circuit. From performance down to composition. Empire... I've said it multiple times in multiple different threads: they are very good at what they do, they just don't do anything. There isn't much else to say. They are clean, and I guess in a way that's entertaining in itself. That's unfortunately the name of the game though. I just wish judging was done a different way. Or at least a demand subcaption put on the sheets. I don't want to discredit Empire AT ALL because they are a very good percussion section, it's just not my cup of tea. Buccs... I don't think there's anyone that has it more figured out than Buccs. The best design by miles of any group. They aren't "as clean" as they were in previous years but they are very very efficient. They have some exposed moments and NAIL them. My only complaint would be what they do when they aren't exposed. They seem to hang out on the field but then again, I guess if it's not detracting from the corps performance, they are doing their job. I still think they are the best percussion section in DCA. The front ensemble compliments the battery and corps very well. Kudos to Reading on another great year. Hurcs... Now I haven't seen MBI or Alliance in person, but if there is one battery out there that could and should dethrone Reading in field percussion, it's Hurcs. It seems like everything Buccs do, Hurcs one-up them. Buccs get in a diamond and do body movements, Hurcs do the same but play through it. Buccs have exposed moments where they put down notes, Hurcs do the same but move during it. I would say they are on a relatively even level of achievement as well, with Buccs getting the slight edge. These guys can MOVE! Huge props to the staff for putting the most demand on their members than any other corps in the circuit. Rochester is going to be very VERY fun, especially with MBI and Alliance thrown into the mix. It's been a good season for drummin' folks. Unfortunately, everything has to come to an end One quick edit: I'm a fool for leaving out Bush. A small line, but VERY clean line. I stood up for them when they beat Empire in Kingston although I wasn't there because they are playing a lot and achieving a lot. Unfortunately, size matters. We're still talking about percussion here people, mind out of the gutters!
  4. Empire SHOULD be close to Buccs in field perc because they ARE almost as clean. The problem is they are doing ten times less. I think demand should have a lot more to do with scores than they actually do, but that's just me. Buccs and Hurcs would run away with it. Of course I haven't seen MBI or Alliance but from what I have seen, those two lines aformentioned are in a class of their own and it will be fun to watch in three weeks.
  5. I think they are very VERY good at what they do. My only problem is they don't do much. You look at lines like Buccs, Hurcs and sometimes Cabs and they make you WANT to watch them because of what they are doing. Empire achieves more, but they attempt less. My personal preference is watching a line run their butts off and put down notes, but everyone has their own style.
  6. Seriously... we have another show to be Monday Morning Quarterbacks with this weekend!
  7. Allow me to play devil's advocate here... I've seen at least one performance from all of the corps in this discussion from last Saturday, although I was not there. I am not surprised one bit that Cabs may have beaten Empire in field. They are attempting a lot more and I've seen them achieve it. And although it seems preposterous, Bush MAY have been cleaner while attempting more than Empire. The name of the game IS to play clean you know... Again, I wasn't there, I don't know. I guess I'm just trying to make sense of it. You CAN have a great ensemble show but lose out on your field number because of demand both musically, visually, spatially... you name it.
  8. The usual suspects. Although Reading doesn't do it for me as much this year but nothing is going to top last year's tenor line. Hurricanes tenor line... yeesh... they are putting it down this year. I won't say they are consistently the cleanest but I will say they are fun as hell to watch.
  9. Absolutely, I don't think anyone counted them out one bit.
  10. Judging by your signature, you've been seeing them all year
  11. When are we going to learn you can't compare scores from different shows? I have not seen MBI this year although I saw them last year in Rochester. I think last year them and Hurcs were neck and neck and I'm pretty sure the scores reflected that. I wouldn't be shocked if it were the same this year.
  12. Alliance definitely impressed last year and I can only imagine they've improved since. I put them in an Empire category. They do what they do VERY well, but they don't do as much as Buccs or Hurcs. Judging by last year at least, and a few Youtubes from this year.
  13. Those field percussion numbers look very VERY off. I was not there, but heard from a friend that Bush DID indeed have a good show (he is also an alumnus though). He said Hurcs rightfully won the show however. It looks like Empire won ensemble, which makes sense because that is their strong point. That field spread is a little skewed, but just from seeing all groups involved with my own eyes I think it would take a very bad performance for Hurcs NOT to win field. And in all honesty, I don't see it as much of a travesty that Cabs beat Empire on the field either... I said long ago if they cleaned up they had darkhorse written all over them. And of course, this is me giving you my opinion without even being there
  14. Three shows tonight... and one tomorrow! Will anyone be making it to any of them? Hurcs, Cabs, Empire, MBI and CorpsVets all in competition.
