  5. Members of the Sun Devils, The Excelsior organization is sad to hear that you won't be fielding a corps this year. Excelsior understands how difficult it is to get "all the wheels turning" to get a corps on the field. We wish you every success in your quest to return next year. Excelsior Drum and Bugle Corps

      Excellent! Wonderful weekend.

  7. "Excelsior" - translated from Latin as "ever higher", also loosely but more widely know as "onward and upward." Here is the latest! "The August Rush" continues with an insanely successful 3rd camp weekend! Excelsior's dedicated members are not dropping the ball on this years profound head start. Corps Director Donel Mataruga led the entire corps during block, teaching them the "The Drumcorps Hustle" - a creative way to implement focus and technique! This was a favorite among all members...even the *ehemmm* less limber of the pack. Donel along with Prostaff members, Ben, Dave and Joey ran 75 minute ensemble blocks on each day. Determined Horn and Drum line members radiated a confident, focused attitude as they rattled off parts 1, 2 and 3. At the conclusion of Camp #3, the corps' horns and drums are playing through Parts 1,2 and 3 solidly; and the Guard has ensembled the routine for "Children of Sanchez." Take a listen to sultry-screamin' sop soloist Greg Mataruga playing over Children of Sanchez, and much, much more! Click HERE for sound clips from last weekend; Rockin' ! From the Drumline Percussion caption head/arranger Ben Schwartz and Prostaff member Doreen Sandoor taught both Parts 2 and 3 to the pit and battery. "I'm Gonna Fly Someday" is the percussion feature for "The August Rush". Battery and Pit can be heard playing a tasty feature. A great mixture of glitz, glamour and groove! Part 3, "Hill Where the Lord Hides/Bellavia" begins with a series of builds as snares and mellophones comp the rock-um sock-um melody of "Hill Where the Lord Hides". Hill slides seamlessly into Mangione's mother-dedicated, fan-favorite; "Bellavia". X-percussion provides a reflective, surreal texture to this segment. Excelsior is still in need of talented front ensemble players. We're looking to fill these spots ASAP- **Please continue to check back for some VERY cool X-Percussion news from South America!** From the Color Guard The color guard has learned the routine for Children of Sanchez. Prostaff member Dale Keeney is never at a loss for teaching the guard some new and very sweet visual tricks! Dale also wowed guard members with his user-friendly home-made sabres! The guard is small but talented, please contact us if you're interested in joining the Excelsior family. This year's "Rush" is contagious! From the Hornline The hornline has finished learning this years music! After warm-up on Saturday and Sunday, the line learned this years gorgeous, lush ballad "Paris Without You" which transitions into the in-your-face, fast paced closer; "Legend of the One-Eyed Sailor". Prostaff members Joey, Greg, Dan, Dave and Daulton held thorough sectionals both days to solidify the music learned at previous camps - a huge help for cleaning! All the tunes were brought together and ensemble with the drumline ... thanks to all members for their preparation, and keep your sights on the "Glow Stick." ---------------------- It is a tall order to grow a drum corps these days, and we want you to know that we are working non-stop to build our organization: for our sake; and for the sake of the activity. We will continue to keep you informed of our progress, and hope you can somehow become involved with us! The proof of the pudding is in the eating; and boy can the X-support-chefs back that one up! Contact us @ excelsiordrumajor@gmail.com; and make your plans to be at our next camp on February19th and 20th! Click HERE for sound clips from last weekend! Magic happens when talented, like minded individuals come together for a common goal. Excelsior is still looking to add talented and dedicated members to its roster. Get off the fence and be a part of "The August Rush"; with the ever ambitious Drum Corps from the Capitol District of New York State...EXCELSIOR!

  11. "Excelsior" - translated from Latin as "ever higher", also loosely but more widely know as "onward and upward." Here is the latest! As announced in previous posts, this years production "The August Rush" features the music of the legendary Rochester, NY-native artists Chuck Mangione and Don Potter. "August Rush" refers to the imminent rush that we in the Drum Corps activity feel come August. Part 1 - Children of Sanchez Part 2 - I'm Gonna Fly Someday Part 3 - Hill Where the Lord Hides-Bellavia Part 4 - Paris With You-Legend of the One Eyed Sailor The Corps' second camp kicked off on an icy December weekend at Troy, NY's Lansingburgh Central School. With horns, sticks and flags in hand; members dove head first into parts 2 and 3 of this years exciting production. New members quickly learned Children of Sanchez and blasted through the new material. Newest music staff member Doreen Sandor rolled up her sleeves and inspired the front ensemble to achieve new heights while Percussion writer/caption head Ben Schwartz worked the young and very talented battery extensively. The percussion was key in pulling Children of Sanchez together. The clarity and smoothness is staggering for this time of year! BRAVO! P.S. Stay posted for some very exciting Excelsior percussion news from South America! Under the direction of Dave Bournazian, Greg Mataruga and Joe Pero, Excelsior's brass-line solidly played through parts 1, 2 and 3. This years hornline has displayed a discipline and self-motivation that has in turn inspired the entire organization. Every individual who attended camp #1, return for camp #2 and had practiced their parts! A real cosmic inspiration! We can still use a few low brass members to fill out the bottom end. Dale Keeney has a group of experienced and talented guard members to work with this season. The guard wowed parents and members at the Sunday night show-and-tell. Dale is teaching the guard some very cool tricks that will really bring "The August Rush" to life. Check out their video on Facebook! The guard is always looking for new members. Please reach out to us if you're interested in making the commitment this season! Most importantly, the entire compliment is beginning to experience the traditional drum corps spirit that makes this activity magical- new, lasting friendships and a dedication to excellence and achievement! At the conclusion of the weekend, the corps reached their goal of working the ensemble of part 1 in its entirety. Take a listen to some clips from camp #2 - (you may need to update your browser add-on to listen) http://www.excelsior...P-I-AND-II.html The 2011 Excelsior Drum and Bugle Corps is indeed encompassing the heritage of its name. This years production of "The August Rush" promises to be the most talented group of drum corps enthusiasts in the corps' history! Being a relatively new corps, we've consistently gained momentum throughout our existence. It is a tall order to grow a drum corps these days, and we want you to know that we are working non-stop to build our organization: for our sake; and for the sake of the activity. We will continue to keep you informed of our progress, and hope you can somehow become involved with us! The proof of the pudding is in the eating! Contact us and make your plans to come to our next camp on January 22nd and 23rd at Lansingburgh Central School in Troy, NY! Excelsior is still looking to add talented and dedicated members to its roster. Get off the fence and be a part of "The August Rush"; with the ever ambitious Drum Corps from the Capitol District in New York State...EXCELSIOR!

  13. *** Excelsior held its second camp of the 2011 season this past weekend. *** New faces both in the corps and ProStaff. A sincere thank you to all! *** The staff agreed that it was a very productive camp, and that the corps shows much potential for the 2011 season. The hornline, under the direction of Joe Pero and Greg Mataruga, has finished: Part 1 - Children of Sanchez Part 2 - I'm Gonna Fly Someday / Bellavia Part 3 - Hill Where the Lord Hides of the show, and played all 3 tunes by the end of the weekend at "show and tell.". Under the Direction of Ben Schwartz, the drumline is rocking as well. They have learned Part 1 - Children of Sanchez A new Cadence Several Warm-up Exercises that had Santa shaking it....and plan to have Part 2 (their DRUM FEATURE) and Part 3 done at the January Camp. Doreen Sandor stepped in this weekend and led the newly formed front ensemble into Part I of the show as well as several warm-up exercises. Welcome Doreen to the ProStaff. The color guard, under the Direction of Dale Keney, is working very hard. They "wowed" everyone during "show and tell" with some very neat moves. Well done folks! I chatted with Patrick White, Director of the Visual Program, and he is anxiously waiting to begin drill work. We anticipate starting drill lessons at Camp 5 in March (maybe sooner). Director and Drum Major Donel Mataruga led the basics program again and kept everyone "on their toes" and "in line." A very good job indeed. Under the Direction of MJ Corrado, the Fox Factor was very busy this weekend too, and did a great job feeding the crew and taking care of operations. They are hugely needed and are vital to the corps. Thank you. AND ONE HUGE THANK YOU TO ALL THE MEMBERS FOR A GREAT WEEKEND!!!! I promise to have photos up tonight. Big dummy that I am, I forgot to bring my camera to the gym for our "show and tell" segment of the camp, and missed the opportunity for a lot of great shots, especially the guard work. I am trying to collect some to post from the members. I have a few at home. The camp closed out with a moving rendition of "Have Yourself a Very Merry Christmas" led by Director Mataruga and Joe Pero, with some of the other ProStaff joining in. Well done! Hope to see more faces at the January (22-23) CAMP 3. (more on that later...). Happy Holidays! Dan Hines Staff Co. Excelsior
