Got the details straight from Andrew himself. I'm pretty sure he was in the front ensemble that year, but yeah, he was in the corps. I'm sure it wouldn't have been possible if it weren't for his entire family being involved in the organization every day. But I have seen a couple of 4- and 5-year-olds in BDC over the years.

Yup, he was playing in the pit when he was 3. He'll probably hold the record for awhile for Most Marching Seasons within the organization...unless Gibbs puts his name on the BD-A Roster again as a soprano every year.....

Andrew Odello, great snare player for the Blue Devils who aged out last Summer (and, I believe, grandson of BD founder Tony Odello), I think holds the record...

    BDC Cymbals - 1993-1995/Snare 1996-2002

    BDB Bass - 2003-2006

    BDA Bass - 2007-2008/Snare 2009-2011

    19 seasons in DCI.

Andrew is on BDB perc staff this season and his brothers are doing the same with all 3 corps. And they are the Grandsons of Blue Devils founder Tony Odello.

As far as I know, the Mandarins are still playing on the King horns obtained circa 2007.

IIRC, Spirit used to play on Kings; do they still?

When I talked to the director of Mandarins at one of the HS marching band shows, he said they will be using kings again.

And Spirit posted a picture on their FB of a bunch of Yamaha Mellophones, ao they made the switch to Yamaha already

Yeah, for a standard 64 member hornline (12 contras, 8 euphs, 12 baris, 12 mellos, 20 trumpets) it would cost $232,080. That's quite a chunk of change and would probably cost even more since the new standard for hornlines has become 72 or 80 members.

You should use this chart to price their horns more accurately http://www.kanstulmu...brass_inst.html

The prices on Kanstul's website show the MSRP, on Jack Kanstul's website, it shows the actual price they sell them for, and through Jack, you can get a better deal for schools/corps

haha well no wonder they switched from kanstul! I mean they're good horns, but they don't offer any type of deals, right? the expenses must have been pretty high.

Kanstul doesn't offer deals like Yamaha, King, Jupiter or any companies out there, they provide quality horns. IMHO, if I could afford to, I would have all my instruments (trombones, tubas, bugles, and any other low brass instrument) made by Kanstul.

  6. Im with HornsUp on this, there's no need in purchasing your own marching horn, you are better off buying a concert euph for use in other ensembles. If you're afraid of intonation issues you might have switching to the marching horn, it's common at auditions to have that.

  7. Glad to see a lot of corps making the switch to the Quantam series (and especially hearing about the improvements being constantly made to the horns). Prior to these recent postings, I wasn't aware of how many corps started using Jupiter! Now I can't wait to see how the corps brass qualities will be this season.

I understood it to mean that the "fee" is what the person would be paid. As based on the descriptions they are definitely jobs that will involve a lot of work.

    Perhaps just some bad wording.

I hope so. If it was a paying position, I would fully support it. Perhaps someone from YEA! Will see this forum and clarify, or they will do some editing on their original post on their website.

I love the bass horns in any configuration and in my my college concert band we had a Bb an F and a monster BB Recording Tuba. What is the origin and background of this instrument. I suppose I could Wiki it to start with, but I prefer first to hear from players with experience playing the horn. Upright, Bell-front. and more plumbing than you have in your home. A magnificent instrument.

    Kevin

I loved playing on my middle school's recording tuba, I believe it was a King, it had a ton of air leaks due to having no case, and it being at a middle school, it was never maintenced or having any student that knew how to play tuba.

Not disagreeing, this is FYI, and only involves my one experience.

I bought a Yamaha Xeno from the Cadets, I think from their 2008 season, used just the one summer, the case was simply stenciled "22." It had the reverse leadpipe. It was in FANTASTIC shape. I would put the finish at 99%. It plays perfectly perfectly, no missing or repaired parts, it came with a brand new gold plated Yamaha MP (equivalent in size to the Bach 3-C, I believe). I paid $1250 for it.

I got a nice horn and supported a great corps. What could be better?

I've heard many good things from purchasing used from the Cadets and CrownStore, after the season is over, all horns are maintenanced by a Yamaha Tech.

From the numbers off Wwbw.com, I added up 24 Trumpets, 16 Mellophones, 16 Tubas, 16 Baritones/8 Euphoniums, all quantum series, and got $152K.

A Yamaha line would cost in the $240K Range, King Ultimate (NOT SB) would cost $216K, Kanstul would cost $203K, And Dynasty $193K, I retract my statement of the $300K hornlines. System Blue horns would cost about $250K

Also, the costs could be lowered if the corps is endorsed by the horn company. Or if they buy used horns.

How much does a Jupiter line cost?

  13. A lot of people have stated the money issues, I'm on their side with this. Jupiter doesn't make "Professional" horns, their horns are in the intermediate range, I am fine with that because the costs of their horns help out starting corps. A full line of horns from Yamaha or King would cost $300K, Jupiter helps make that cost a lot lower. I agree the hornlines that switched to Jupiter have gotten a different sound. When BD upgraded to the new Kings (System Blue), you could tell the difference. I'm sure the brass caption heads of corps that use Jupiter Brass are working close with the company to make the horn better, while keeping it affordable.
