I lasted about a week.  If you’re over 40, you’re lumped into this cranky old man group that hasn’t been to a show in twenty years.  It became tiresome.

Hey, I'm midway into 35 and I wear my crank hat loud and proud! I'll have to invent a 'get off my lawn!' notification when people stand in front of me at shows :D

You mentioned that you hadn't seen Boston live.  If that is the case, you are not getting an accurate picture of what is happening on the field. The trees are over on side 1, which of course is the left side of the field.  That guard has a brief feature within that set, but then they leave that stage fairly quickly.  In actual fact, BAC's 42 member guard is literally all over the place, at times covering the entire field.  Actually, there are substantial sequences where there are no flags out there at all.. with rifles, sabres, and spears being featured.  Many members actually perform on multiple pieces of equipment during the show and frankly the focus is on the weapons much of the time.  As someone who witnessed (in person) the show being taught during ST and ensemble rehearsals before both the Lawrence and Lynn shows this past weekend, I can tell you that this guard is even better than last year's, which placed third each night at Indy.

Everyone is entitled to like or dislike any group, but to suggest that BAC is "parking" their flag line out back somewhere is just not factual.

I also better check myself because I'm falling out of love with DCI in general, and that informs my overall bias. However, I love what BAC is putting on the field.

  3. I never said I disliked, you don't have to put words in my mouth k? I've traditionally been a Crown honk, but I'm the most critical with some of their decisions with this show at the moment. You don't catch that tbh b/c this is your group. And that's okay. I'm aware of my limitations, which is why I left a big fat disclaimer beforehand.

not arguing your prediction, but "Boston doesn't have enough drill"?!  they have one of the hardest drills this year.  I agree that the back flags are not integrated enough but the weapon guard is a top 3 guard right now.

The second movement is spent rocking hips and doing what's currently on trend with movement. I stand by my assessment for now, but it may warrant a rewatch. Honestly, that's what I noticed immediately with the flag line among the trees, and not ill intent. Is there a section I need to watch for with the drill?

  5. Haven't made one yet, too cautious in the off-season. Too cautious even now. Due to job changes and things going on, won't see a live show this year :(. Will have to wait for theater-cast.

    1. SCV - I feel it.
    2. BD - should clean up but may be 1-3
    3. Coats - Has everything it needs to win, and I love everything about it. Guard is 'functional" to my eyes on only streaming, maybe a little overscored.
    4. Cavies - staying on trend on one-upping their nearest competitor at the last competition of the year
    5. Crown - show needs to be clarified and make sense for them to move up. Top performers.
    6. Boston - great show, just doesn't have enough drill and flags stay on back stage right most of the show. Wonderful in all captions, not sure why that section of guard is not integrated more
    7. Cadets - love em more than I have in a long time
    8. Phantom - wild guess, but they'll clean
    9. BK
    10. Mandies
    11. Crossmen
    12. Spirit - my gut says Stars will stay, but this is my want pick

I try not to dwell too much on the themes of shows anymore. Drum corps is a lot more enjoyable that way. For me it always comes down to which corps is presenting me with the most entertaining musical arrangements

Exactly. There truly is nothing new under the sun. Themes are the same way.

I really recommend reading the story of the tower of babel and whatnot and then comparing it to the program notes/performance. Once you understand the original context, the show is really well thought out already to portray the design.

I too am not seeing the appeal that everyone else is yet, but I'm sure that will change when I see it live or repeated viewings. Let down by the drill until the ballad, though the explanations help.

LOVE the corps proper! Not crazy about the guard uniforms, look a little like something Mandarins would wear years ago - just not them and a little "thrifty." I didn't like the show when I saw the first video, bit these will help.

  9. 2000 will always be at the top of my list, as that's the first Cavaliers show I saw live as a young high school student mopping up the droll at the end of that show and just being introduced to drum corps after seeing pictures online ("who are Blue Devils and Santa Clara?").  And that percussion...

    1992-wonderful music and emotion

    2006-just cool and bad a**

2001-Should not have won, too dirty; but set up the concept show for other corps to follow

2004-Finally put to rest "I wonder how it would be if a modern drum corps performed classic James Bond music instead of a crappy hs band?"

    Least:

2013-hints of a better corps than the previous year, but design was still a little on the nose

2007-Not my least fav, but just kind of boring minus some cool guard and drill moves

2015-took me until mid season to realize the show wasn't about video games...

    2012-Just...no.

1996-well performed, but a little 'vanilla'

  10. 1999- Great music, great drill, but probably would have enjoyed it more with white instead of gray. 2000 stepped it up a notch, but this had better music overall and not just randomness.

2015-My favorite show of that year, and not too preachy or "emo" yet really gets your heartstrings.

2011-Classic repertoire; kind of miss this short detour from BK. All it needed was better drill.

2003-Really like the unique choice of the Bulgarian music.

2006-Quintessential BK. It's like they knew they were dirty in 2002 so they decided to redo that show and put it to 2006 and 2007. This was dark, but had a savage performance feel to it.

    Least fav:

2017-weird pacing of the show, park and play for the opener, strange lyrics, tag ending that seemed derivative of their previous trilogy endings. Didn't add anything to Hide and Seek arrangement that was already better from Spirit 10 years prior.

2001-As others mentioned, but I do admit to liking the drum solo.

2008-after Turbine, this was a miss for me.

Lindsay Kusmierczak replaces Jim Moore as the Color Guard Caption Head is incorrect.

Lindsay Kusmierczak replaces Shavon Garcia as Color Guard Caption Head. Jim Moore is the the choreographer and maybe the Color Guard Supervisor?

Where is Shavon going? Didn't see any news on her fb page, but maybe deciding to pursue personal non-guard related interests since she has the Imbue thing (just speculation from me).

Also, I'm assuming Daniel Wiles and Richard Hinshaw will keep their Cavaliers' affiliation and this isn't a move full time to Colts?

Oh gosh no.  A LOT of them do know.  DCI/ WGI youth talk among themselves all the time. Especially in the Guard world. The notion that  most  of the top  adult educational talent in WGI/ DCI world is not known to many or most  of the talented performers in these circles is not my experience/ assessment. DCI Corps marchers in the non top 16 Corps and in Open Class Corps may not know whos's who in great Show Designs to the same degree of knowledge, but the notion that  most  of the top youthful performers in WGI/ DCI world don't know who the best Show Designers are in WGI/DCI/ Guard world is something that we will just have to respectfully just disagree on then..

It's probably due to the same reason these staff members flock to the "safe" big, BOA winning schools than trying to build up a program from the ground up. And they can use these bands as recruiting tools.

  13. I think that Meredith Monk music would fit very well into their wheelhouse with what they are currently going for, modern and sometimes abstract pieces that are a little funky rhythmically from a composition standpoint but work for the field. I'm thinking something like Double Fiesta (and I'm sure others), an acquired taste for sure but I'm imagining the horns/percussion parts in it would be great.
