Just think how fresh some boxing-style body movement would look on the field. Those 86 boxing rings were great!

We had our share of mishaps with them, lots of lost shakos. I remember we were in montreal and it was pouring. The rings got soaked, and were hanging low, we lost a lot of shakos that day LOL

I'm glad my points about the literal nature of Cadets programs is being mentioned elsewhere in people's posts :) I agree with the above

I have openly stated that Cadets have become to literal. Some years over the past 10 the have been not so literal. But in the years they have its overbearing. Let the product, music, drill, guard, percussion speak for themselves.  For the most part, I think the average person already knows what the story of the music you are playing is about. Just do not shove it down my throat.

That said, Cadets are not the only culprits.

Why is there a need these days to tell a story? I get it if you are playing Phantom, Les Miz.  etc. Give the audience a chance and not be bombarded. They/we are a bit smarter than given credit for.

    ouooga,

I have one ? and one comment and one answer.

If we were to choose a different word to replace "best" in that article, what would it be?

I believe the answer is entirely subjective.

If I had to choose from among 4 results for the Regiment ( 1st place in 2008 @ 98.125. 1st place in 1996 @ 97.400, 2nd place in 2006 @ 96.850 or 6th place in 2010 @ 93.150) my brain would certainly say 2008 but my heart would say 2006 and my soul would say 2010.

You hit the operative word sir............... subjective, Does a score dictate best? No. I totally agree with your reasoning, PR and otherwise.

There should be more people with your enlightenment .

I get what you're saying and I agree. This option allows the corps to do both and quite well. Not such a theatercal source such as WSS or Candice would allow for a straight forward Cadet classic with some moments of depth and substance

Exactly. Make refrence points but not oversell literally. Make a monster hornline and an in your face percussion line with a solid guard and an in you face drill.

I think after the parade of spandex, people would love  this.  But a scores be ###### outlook would have to be taken.

Hence why I said, what do they have to lose. Bring it and say WTF, you don't like it, so be it. I preface that with, they better be monsters at clean and don't give a rats ### what judges think. I think If they pulled out a CADET show............score or not, they will be cowd favorites.

Waterfront has moments for movement especially with a more Film Noir approach

It also allows for massive moments of music and a big brass ballad moment

    Agree on the ballad.

After that, shove it in their face with a powerfull drill and hornline

    Best. Idea. Ever.

Put the traditional uniforms on. Bring a solid ferocious piece of music. Say go for it.  AKA what Waterfront is actually about. March a kick ### drill with a solid music book. And say ya know what, this is us. Don't like it. TUff.

So I'm also in the On the Waterfront camp

id love to see it done in black and white like the movie with a gritty edge... but set today in terms of large black and white photos as backdrops that turn around to all white for the guard feature pairing couples interacting against the back drop

tell the non literally story of love crossing boundaries aka WSS

its a terrific piece of music and is very percussion dependent in many parts, I feel it would highlight the corps strengths while providing a subtle story line set to a powerful score. And yes, they should bring back the boxing rings lol

I agree. But given the current state of body movement, etc. it may be a tuff sell. I am with you tho. Play to the strength of the corps.  There is so much potential for a Waterfront show.

I agree, subtle. But it is a powerfull piece, They have nothing to lose. Go solid Cadets, demanding drill, musicality. Maybe, just maybe, do Cadets  and say WTF, you don't like it. so be it. Take a risk and throw it out there.

Do a version of, if not exact Cadets uniform. Say, this is who we are. Bring it.

BTW, I have a set of the fabric of the boxing rings George.

  9. I will never criticize any corps. It is human nature to like certain things and dislike certain things. One thing I will never do is be negative to a corps. If I am not enthralled with a show. I keep it to myself.

I , to be honest was not a huge fan early on of this years Crown. After seeing them thru the season,  All I can say is, WOW. One of the GREATEST horn lines ever. The show has and continues to grow on me. I can get by the vocal mishap. Does not take away the brilliance. Were they clean marching........... they could have been cleaner. That said, this corps, as they have already proven will continue to be a monster.

I like the idea of a Candide show, but I would LOVE if Cadets did an On The Town show. The music just screams Cadets all the way. Plus, they've only done one piece from the musical, back in 2002.

An On The Waterfront show would be great, too.

I think a full fledged On The Waterfront would be great. As one that marched 86, I think the music was only touched.

it may be a bit dark in todays standards.  but given the right treatment, and not going overboard in a cheesy way...............would have potential to be awesome

  11. LOL I can recite the movie, verbatim. When I was in my younger years, when I used to teach on a regular basis my band. At camp, our staff nightly staples were History of the World, Holy Grail and Fast Times. Heck, probably my most watched movies ever. On VHS in a cabin in the woods lol
