  1. Good luck to everyone and let the performance do the talking. I love um all (but SCVC just a little more). Wish I could be there to see it. I would be a marathon spectator. I think they should make that a tee shirt. I went to DCI semi finals and survived the watching all the corps marathon. All in jest. I do wish I could be there to see each and everyone of them perform. Maybe next year.

  2. Enthused. Wanted to go to finals but just couldn't swing it. We are in Cali and it is a long way for us to go. I will go with the corps on food crew next year! Till then I hang out and get texts from my daughter and do what I can to let people know how fantastic open class is. Don't miss the competition this year because it is going to be fierce.

  3. OMG you like more than one corps. How can this be? I myself liked everyone I saw in California. I loved SCVC (esp cause that is the corps my daughter is in), I loved BDC (because not loving them is like kicking a puppy), I loved Phantom (because I always love Phantom. Phantom is like that guy on the front of a romance novel. I also love that they kill people.) Boston was fantastic (gaurd rifle toss of doom), Blue Devils (Just fun, everybody now.....), SCV (percussion gods), and so much more. I have fun and enjoy all the corps. It's true I admit it. I am now looking for a 12 step program.

  4. I am not sure if the activity is different, or if the culture is different, or a little of both. It isn't like the kids are on the phone 24/7 calling and texting. They are still practicing just as hard and putting their heart and soul into drum corps, but things change. The experience that was had 5 to 10 years ago is different than the one that is had today. It isn't better or worse, but it is different. I bet if you asked someone from any given period in drum corps they would tell you that the time they were marching was the best time to be doing it, and would have multiple reasons why. That is because being in drums corps is great. Just like the time period that you were a kid was the best time to be a kid. That's because being a kid is great! So some kids like to call/text their parents more, and the corps let them. It isn't what use to happen, but things change. I like hearing from my daughter, and she likes to text me. She does it on the bus and she uses text so that she is quiet and dosen't bother anyone. I don't see it as a problem or distraction. Her corps dosen't see it as a problem or distracton. In fact she has been moved up to a first part. She is able to focus and work when she needs to, but she needs to relax when she can. If texting me helps then text away. Other kids don't do it and that's OK too. Everyone do your own thing! Whatever works for you!

  5. With my daughter it is a brief text every other day. I think it depends on the kid. Last year I did not text her at all because I did not want to barge in on her corps time. She asked me to text a little more often becaused she missed talking to her family. What can I say I am just that much fun to talk to.

  6. have to agree here. But, OC SCVC and then BDB seems to be the direction. I know neither BDB or SCVC was happy the other day with their performances, but I wonder if BDB can get clean in time. SCVC will be very clean, they always are. And OC has been coming on strong for a few years...

I know SCVC's horn line was flat as a pancake for their last show. I can tell you that they have been making up for it in practice. It will be interesting to see what happens tonight. I don't have any inside info for BDB, but they are a bunch of pro's and I see them fighting to the end. Oregon has a great show and a talented bunch this year. Just a great top 3 in OC this year. Fans are in for a treat this year.

  7. OK, after spending some quality time around many corps members on the road I think I know a way some extra money can be made for the corps or DCI. Product endorsement. Yes, let the kids try out deodorant, foot powders, shoe inserts, sunscreen, or whatever because if it works for a corps member during tour it will work for anyone. I love those kids but I think we need a Febreze sponsorship. Those gyms were ripe. We won't even talk about the shoes. Picture the commercial they could make. Scenes of the kids marching during practice cut to a scene of the kids marching during a competition then a voice over for Dr. Sholls official shoe insert for Phantom Regiment. I am just being silly, but it could happen. Just like everything else it could be good, bad or a mix of the two for DCI. The money generated could be split between the corps used to make the ad and some used to fund smaller corps or an emergency fund.

  8. The point of the thread was to highlight how great the shows were this year. I thought that was obvious. And while new, I have been here long enough to know that there are plenty of people here that dislike certain shows, regardless of how big of fans they are. In fact, that seems to be all that people talk about.

OK, let me help you a little. I know nothing about marching or music. I am someones mom. I am an ICU nurse. I work on the food crew of an open class corps. I like to take care of the kids, and I treat them all like they are my own children. Last tour I baked brownies for 150 people as a treat because I knew it would make them happy. I looked at sunburns and put topical lidocain on them so they wouldn't hurt. I make sure they drink enough fluid so they don't dehydrate. I sleep 3 to 4 hours a night so they can eat well and practice 12 hours a day. It hurts my feelings when people say mean things about my corps or the show they work so hard on. I don't want to see anyone "hate" it. Each corps is full of parents just like me. It is OK to say you don't like part of a show, or it could have been performed better. No one likes everything a corps does, but remember these are my kids! Plus there has been a bunch of hurtul things said about some corps, so when a thread has this title it is bound to generate some ire. Being new and young is hard. Keep on trying. It is good that you are here. Just try to be kind and come from that place. I know you ment well. Don't give up.

  9. Everyone loves the big boys, but OC needs some love. You don't see much of us on YouTube or the DCI web site. You don't hear much about OC on Field Pass. It would be nice to get a bit more exposure. These corps work very hard and they should be recognized for it. Many of these corps are very good. I have seen BDB and SCVC and they have fantastic shows. I have not seen Oregon, but the reviews on this forum speak volumes. OC has great recruitment potential. It is a shorter tour that is more affordable and is a great way to enter the world of DCI. I love OC and I love that my kid was in it last year and is in it this year. I think I might keep on volunteering with SCVC even after my daughter ages out of DCI. Yep, I love it that much. I appreciate what I have. I appreciate you open class.
