  1. The Jersey Surf Drum and Bugle Corps of Mount Holly, New Jersey will take the field with the new Quantum marching series from Jupiter, Mapex and Majestic for the 2008 Drum Corps International competitive season. After testing the Quantum models at the Jupiter headquarters and at its southern New Jersey rehearsal facility in January, the Open Class corps has taken delivery of an entire suite of new Quantum instruments which were designed with an ensemble approach creating a unified voicing across the entire musical spectrum.

  2. Hey folks,

Go to the door or window and look outside. It's kinda nice out right? OK well maybe the weather is crappy but the world certainly is not ending as far as I know. Get away from your computers. I've been involved with Drum Corps for the past 10 or so years and frankly I don't care that they've allowed electronics because I have other more important things to worry about in my life. It doesn't bother me one bit either way and I really don't think you should be getting this worked up whether you've been around the activity for 50 or 5 years.

That's my 2 cents now back to that banana talk.

  3. Wicked winter weather is threatening the Atlantic coast this weekend, causing us to reschedule our December audition and rehearsal weekend in the interest of safety for our members, staff and volunteers.

The camp is being moved to next weekend, December 21-23 at the Camden County Technical School.

Prospective members who were planning to audition this weekend and who will be unable to attend next weekend's camp should visit the website by clicking here to contact the office.

  4. The last time that the Cadets and Crossmen shared a spring training location was in 2002. At that time the Cadets moved in about a week before we did and had rehearsal fields that were closer to the dorm aka slinky field (but to be perfectly honest I think were in worse shape than what we had up the hill). There were schedules that depicted when each of us would eat, just like there is in any high school where they don't want 260 hungry kids attacking the food truck at the same time. I don't remember who ate first each time but there was always plenty of food so it really didn't matter.

  5. What is their staff payroll compared to some small countries?

Trust me, from an ex-employee, the money isn't why the staff at YEA works there. They pay well enough for a small non-profit but the real reason people stay is because they enjoy working for and with the members of the corps/bands. High staff turn around is typical when you have a younger staff and the pay isn't high. They seem to have built a really strong base of employees over the past 3 years and thing seem to be going well. I had other aspirations that I needed to pursue and that's why I left but I enjoyed the people I worked with while I was there.

  6. 1) Yes, Gary is correct in that one interpretation is that the original music had interesting time signatures used. . . back when the middle tune was "Supertonic Suite" by Lyle Mays. Now, the deletion of that tune and the insertion of "Candle In The window" by Linda Eder made no sense at all with the theme of the show. . . but that is a different topic. . .

Don't worry Chuck, we all know that reason, and it really bummed us out to get Candle and have that be the song that we had to work on all season to get right, rather than cleaning other parts of the show.

  7. Duuuuuude ...

The staff bus is most definitely still SEPTA. And the air conditioning on that bus works better than any of the other buses!! I have no idea how they manage to do that. I don't think Bob will ever get rid of her =) She got swallowed by a sidewalk once (2001? 2002? dunno, wasn't there).

Funny story, and I swear it's true. One night in 2005, we were driving through Jersey after a show at Giants Stadium. As we're driving, someone comes over the radio on the guard bus and says something to the effect of "Jersey Surf? What is that, like, a dance squad or something?" The band Nickelback was cracking jokes about us and how "ancient" SEPTA was. Dead serious. They must have had a show at the Meadowlands and pulled up along side of us.

    Hayley,

The Septa that you are thinking of is not the same Septa the old phart Surf folks are referring to. That Septa died a few years ago and was also referred to as the fishbowl because of the shape of its front windshield. You are referring to bus 962 which is now the staff bus and has taken on the moniker SEPTA Surf Executive Personel Transportation Aparatus.

  8. I'm glad that the Crossmen have Sylvester in their stable but I'd also like to see them break away from YEA and go at it on their own.:wub:

I feel that having two Division 1 corps in the same stable, YEA, is keeping the Crossmen from gaining any further position in Division 1 !!

Do a little back reading on DCP and you'll find that this indeed happening. Though not 100% right away, over the course of the next few years Crossmen will be a completely seperate entity.

  9. If Texas is such rich fodder for corps…why has there not been a top corp from there for years…or the only top 12 corp was a transplant that died?

I know the myth of Texas…anyone recall that Lone Star Percussion, Regiment push into Texas starting back in1981 (or 80ish)

    I do !!!!

And where they at now !!!!

Maybe band is enough, more so when your band may blow away this ‘new’ corp, all that money to step down…yeap, more logic blocks…told that there are open spots in smaller div1 and most div 2/3 because every wants to march a winner (when I thought opens spots were the definition of 2/3) – so why not send them a winner?

Why not the cadets to Texas?

I’d almost bet, if I were a betting man, more Texans sign up for Cadets next year than Crossmen…of course, YEA will dangle the promise of a Cadets spot after a year or 2 in Crossmen getting up to speed…but in a year or 2 YEA won’t care or let the kids in Cadets because they’ll have nothing to do with Crossmen

Fool you, what is it…5 time?

What's that smell? Me thinks there is a troll lurking about! :feednotroll:

  10. I guess I don't get into the commodity aspect of buying drum corps, why not just start up one of your own...that's what I'm asking.

Like it or not, Running a Drum Corps is the same as running a business. When companies buy out other companies, often times if the company they buy has a better name in the industry they will rename themselves. In the case of the Crossmen, if you are trying to build up souvie sales, what better way then to have 35+ years of tradition and history to sell to? If you were in the souvie alley and you had to decide between the Crossmen through the years DVD or the one year of Joe's Drum Corps from Texas, which do you choose? ......we'll pretend the Cavies aren't at the show so you can't buy their stuff :)
