  1. I can't believe you take offense to keeping open minds and ears. Mini corps isn't won by impressive credentials, it's won on stage. Your comments have no validity whatsoever. I also have to add, the attitude of 'we're going to be more cerebral, if you don't like it, tough" says a lot about your contempt for the average DCA fan. It could do you guys in someday......

My comments are as perfectly valid as yours are patently ridiculous.

What response did you hope to elict when you implied that Star United updated their website in order to gain some competetive advantage? Or that the judges would be so incompetent or misguided that they would read our bios, and actually "give" us a score based on our past experience.

(Which I will again make clear, that only a few of us have ever been paid to play, most of the corps is just drum corps folks, like all of you. You can see for yourself at Star United Website)

As far as contempt for the average DCA fan... I have put my time in DCA, if you will look at my signature.

I was even there to give a name to Cozy Baker's all age corps, Miami Valley MIRAGE.

The only contempt I feel is towards people like yourself. By that I mean, those who make it a point to bag on our accomplishments at every turn, to make unfounded assertions about our backgrounds, or to even go so far as to claim that we somehow employ dirty tricks to sway the judging community's decision, or have ulterior motives for doing something nice for people who might like to know more about our group.

At least most the people in your camp took the time at DCA to give us the finger in person, so we could see thier faces as they openly derided our recent success.

But please don't think that I believe that the "average" DCA fan doesn't enjoy what we are doing.

For every finger wagger or obscenity mumbler, (they didn't have the balls to yell it!),

there were countless other really nice people...

...the old guy who has been coming to corps shows since the 50's who made it a point to buy me a beer and talk to me about my corps experience, and just what he enjoyed about our show...

...the group of three music educators, all retired, who stopped me in the parking garage who were totally digging the breath of fresh air (their opinion) that we brought to mini corps...

...and mostly, the other competitors in mini-corps. Guys like Frank, Strutta, and many others who gave us props, buy us adult oriented beverages, and even take the time to stick up for us when we choose not to. You guys are the best!

In short, I again am looking forward to a great time in Rochester with my friends from all over this great circuit.

Making those who like us very happy and taking solace in the idea, that if you are doing something valid, you will always have your detractors.

And yes, I can't speak for all of Star United, but I personally relish all of it.

    Especially the hate!

  2. The thread is about head tilt, not tone quality. Personally I think all upstream players have a pretty bright tone. Relatively.

Actually you have to play that way on trombone.

Actually, I don't play that way.

But then, I have no overbite!

  3. Give em Hell Mass Brass......show them that the DCA Mini Corps cuircuit really means business!!!

I only wish more mini corps would be invited to perform at these DCA shows during the season!!!!

Star United was invited to perform at the Kiltie Klassic in August, but we had to decline due to logistics. So it does happen.

Congrats Mass Brass on your upcoming performance!

    See you all in Rochester...

  5. Wow! For representing such a small niche of the DCA world, this thread is becoming epic!

In any case, this might be my last reply in this thread.

Frank Ponzo, you da man! It was great to hear you and to talk to you on Friday Night.

Strutta, thanks for the compliments! Sean related your conversation to us on the bus, and I wish we had been able to pull out all that Stah S*$T for 'ya

All of the folks who feel bad because of what we do, we're sorry. We really don't know any other way to do this than balls-out.

All the folks who dislike what we play, I guess you must only like half of the competing field corps in DCA anymore either. DCA weekend must really suck for you.

And to the many "old guys" I spoke with over the last two years, guys who have been coming to DCA and DCI for 40+ years, and who have been thrilled with what Star United has brought to DCA,

Both thank you, and you're welcome.

  6. Pay for play = Professional

Just because a guy gets paid to referee a local winter basketball league ten times year does not make him a professional referee.

In my mind, the same goes for Musicians.

I think that what has happened over time is that people identify as professionals when what they mean is professional-level.

But, if it makes people feel who play for pay several times a year to identify as "professional", then more power to them.

I am sorry if you still feel insulted. But if my explanation of my use of language doesn't help, then there is nothing more I can do to make it better.

    P.S.

Being a music educator has nothing to do with the quality of a player. As a professional player you should know that.

I will again use the basketball example.

Jeff Van Gundy was a very good basketball coach/educator.

But if you were putting together a basketball team for the Olympics, you wouldn't have him playing on it.

  7. .......if you think that is the definition of a professional, you just insulted a whole lot of people anyway,

70% of income from playing as the definition of a professional is what I have always heard.

That doesn't mean that if you make less than that you are not playing at a "professional" level.

If your neighbor pays you to mow their lawn once a month does that make you a professional landscape technician?

I only made about $6,000 off of my horn last year, so currently I am not by strict definition a professional at this time, although I do still play for pay.

I have made 100% of my income for many years in the past, does that mean I am a professional now?

I do, however, play at a "professional" level at all times.

All that aside, I believe that I am the only member of the group that gets paid to play with any real frequency.

Should I be barred from participating? Should Joey Pero, or Roger Grupp, or Peanut from 'gades, or the guys from MCL?

(there are many others, I just don't know all your names!)

I hope my discussion of my understanding of the semantics of the word professional removes the sting of my supposed insult.

  8. How many professional musicians are in Star?..............bueller.............bueller...........

If you mean how many people currently make at least 70% of their income from performing as a musician, not as an educator....

By my count, that number would be... Zero.

If you mean, how many people at one time or another in their life have made at least 70% of their income in a year from playing, the number rises to

    5

    Out of 21.

I have heard this argument bandied about by many folks, including people I know personally.

    That we are all ringers.

    Professionals.

    Blast cast members.

    Paid by Bill Cook.

    On a mission from G-D.

    Whatever...

All I know is that, the two guys in the line this year, write the fingerings in on their music, because they cannot read music.

Star United provides a high level of quality at all times from good old fashioned sweat equity.

    You know, hard work.

    Adherence to the program.

    Member commitment.

The exact same things that all drum and bugle corps who are successful in either DCI or DCA or VFW or whatever the heck you want to call it have always done.

So for those of you who love what we do, Thanks for the accolades.

But we need to give a huge thank you to the people who flicked us off and yelled stupid crap at us during our performances.

That kind of s*%t gives us a chubby!

If we make you feel upset/uncomfortable enough to yell at us or risk your own bodily harm from flipping the bird (Hornline ogre will be dispatched).........

Then we are doing exactly what we should be doing.

For DCA. For Star. For ourselves.

    See you next year!

  9. Awesome! I didn't know the red around the stripe would be shiny.

Why do the contras wear their stars over the center?

If it was on the breast like the others, it would get destroyed from physical violence from horns down.

Just take a look at the way the horn is held at carry versus most other contra lines and it will make sense.

Although the horn never touches except on horns down.

  10.

I was going to ask that question yesterday, Jeff..I saw his name listed on the website, and figured..Doesn't Ken have enough going on, he has to play in a British -style Brass Band too?

May have to order a recording..To add to my new collection of BB discs.

    Pat

    Yeah, he's a busy cat!

Can't wait to see you guys at the mini corps show at DCA.
