Sure you remember how low the stands were at Danville. People on bottom row had their feet resting on ground level. We were second row (IOW bell level) and big push at end of Rodeo (opening number) came at the stands with sop screamers right in front of us. 😳 one of my top three unforgettable corps moments

There's a video of Matadors' 1977 DCA Prelims performance out there (YouTube, I think... and it's a bit jumpy in spots). It's everything that DCA was/is supposed to be about... hugely entertaining, quality corps, and the "star power" of Jim Centerino and Ritchee Price. Plus a great visual design by Bobby Hoffman.

If that's your criteria would you pay to See Matadors 77 again?  i know I sure as hell would!

Heck yeah!!! IMO the most entertaining corps in DCA that year. Their Madison Square Garden performance in '77... they almost tore the roof off the place. And great people, too!

  3. Empire Statesmen, Matadors, Minnesota Brass... the three I miss the most.

My definition of "entertaining" has always been "I would pay to see that show again." Those three corps fit that definition, for me.

I assumed by stop at 9 (rather than stop with 9) she just meant stop before 9, given that stop means you do not do something.

But then again, I believe in giving everyone the benefit of the doubt. Should I stop doing that? And if so, should I stop at your post, or should I stop with your post?

    Yes and no.

Part of the excitement for me during the old A/60 days was seeing what corps like Mandarins, Academie Musicale and Blue Stars could do with 18 +/- horns.

Absolutely. Saw the Raiders from NJ the year they won Div. 3... I think they did music from Jesus Christ Superstar. 16 horns or so. They were great!!! A clinic on how to design a show for a small corps.

Yep hope someone comes up with reasons and fixes for this mess. Have a 71 year old friend who took 2 trips to State College (100+ Miles) for vaccines. Have neighbor who is 30ish and has a nasty medical issue. Talked to her mom other day and mom drove her to Pittsburgh (4 hour drive) for vaccination. Given both of these ladies were willing to do anything to get vaccinated ASAP but wth?

edit: the trip distances I have are one way 🥵

I recently received a notice from Johns Hopkins that I am eligible for their vaccination list, since I've been a JHH patient in the past three years. So perhaps there will be a couple of trips back to Baltimore for me in the near future. I hope so. Now... if I can just remember how to navigate the JHH outpatient center parking garage. LOL

Acting Secretary of Health in PA just ordered a “speed up” in giving vaccinations so state can meet its goal of finishing first group by a certain date. As a cynical ex govt employee who worked in a supply agency I don’t see any info on logistical plans to “make it so”.

I hear that, Jim. A snail's pace in several parts of PA, including where I live.

I'm so far down the eligibility list that I wonder if World War 3 will break out first.

One of the district DCN memories I have is the issue that followed 1978 DCI East. Blue Devils won but the writer was not pleased with the victory. Phantom’s Stravinsky opener was another source of his ire. Bridgemen and 27th did not get off easily either. He thought rules should be changed and corps should play marches and songs. He didn’t know what was happening to drum corps. Could you imagine today showing 1978 to kids on the field and considering it too radical?

Yeah.... DCN writers were not shy about sharing their opinions.   LOL

A story about that... 1980, the DCN publisher (Andy Uzarins, I think it was) covered the Boston Cup combo DCI/DCA show in Boston and basically tore us (DCA's Long Island Sunrisers) apart in his writeup.  1980 was a rebuilding year for us... coming off two straight DCA titles in 1977-78 and a third-place finish in '79 a bunch of veterans retired... and he seemed to take delight in the fact that we were crushed by the Hawthorne Caballeros by a wide margin at the Boston show. Cabs won, we were second.  Just the tone of his article.... it was like he went out of his way to tell us that we had no chance at winning a title in '80.

I was Sun's co-PR director in 1980.... so I and my PR partner sent a letter to him, telling him that hey, guess what.... we #### well knew at the start of the 1980 season that we were up against it, and that he could lay off belittling us. LOL.

I don't remember if we ever heard back from him, and maybe we went "NYC metro area" on him a bit... LOL... but it felt good to get it off our chests.

Years back I found that DCW was stronger with Midwest corps and shows, DCN was stronger with East Coast shows and corps, especially Massachusetts where it was published and New Jersey. I loved reading both. I do recall DCW being stronger with off season news and in slow months published the all photo issues.

Steve Vickers is able to keep it going due to his hard work and dedication. He also knows just about  everyone in the activity and remembers the people he meets. He is very helpful to show organizers. He also appreciates the writers who contribute to the publication and is very supportive.

One of the things I remember most about DCN (Drum Corps News) back in the day was its "letters to the editor" page.  For a while... not sure if they eventually changed the policy.... the letters from readers were basically un-edited (except for profanity and things like that) and un-screened.... DCN didn't check to see if someone was using a fake name, or was writing stuff that wasn't even close to resembling the truth, or whatever. (And I confess... I know some folks who sent letters in under fake names.  🙂)  As a result, that page was like the Wild West.  All sorts of crazy stuff there.
