  1. There is no doubt competitively they could do it.

BUT, they should make sure they are financially sound. They have been smart the last few years to do their little tour in Washington/Oregon, take 2 weeks off competitively, and then go to championships. This obvioulsy shows they know how to handle what money they have, and probably won't move up to World unless they are certain that it is a smart move.

At least what I think.

You said it all, DrumManTX. I agree with you 100%. The Oregon Crusaders were most impressive from where I sat. Quite competitive as well, as we all know. Another corps I wish all the success in the world for 2013! Go for it!!

  2. We all know that pretty soon we will see the merri-go-round of staff moving from one corps to another but before that happens (any day now!), what staff changes would you like to see/expect to happen?

I expect to hear that Michael Gaines moves to SCV (& Pete Weber to Cavaliers) ......

I have it on good authority, as well as past history, that there will be no changes with our staff for 2013. After taking this summer off for personal reasons, I have decided to return to my corps next year. I probably will have to audition but I have no fears as I was a strong lead with the corps in the past. I am also looking forward to a very rewarding season in 2013 and I wish all my fellow corps members in other units much success as well!

  3. I have been following a series elsewhere on the 'net about the growing concerns over concussions in football, and the question of whether the NFL and/or NCAA have been covering up information on brain injuries that players suffer. Naturally, commentators have made various predictions as to the sport's future, not just for the pros and colleges but also at the high school level, where liability costs might force a radical change in the sport, at the least (to something like flag football, for instance). Is it unimaginable that there would be no high school football? If not, what would that mean for drum corps?

I know of a few schools in western Ohio who field marching bands despite not having a football team, but I don't think that's very common. Many h.s. marching bands who excel in competition are nonetheless obligated to play at football games, as well. Would most high school marching bands disappear if their football programs shut down? Would they start playing at the soccer games instead? Some people here on these forums have said that competitive scholastic marching bands have taken the place of the local corps of old: the base from which members for at least the junior corps are now drawn. Is that so? Could drum corps survive if there were no marching bands?

I seriously dobt the NFL is about to forgo the millions, perhaps billions, of revenue dollars go by the wayside. I believe as long as their are humans still living on earth, there will always be major league football. So no need to worry about the possibility of the end of drum corps should this sport ever cease to exist. Just my two cents worth.

  4. So I was checking out the Aimachi video that Boo posted,

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJe84VeOIs

Since I saw them live at DCA, I've been watching the Kidgrove Scouts too.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vM-Pum1CEM0

Finally, I saw Patria from Guatemala because of the BD trip there

I know there are groups in Indonesia, Europe, and other places in the world.

It's great to see Drum Corps and the marching arts in general in so many countries around the world.

Still the question remains... What part of the world can rival the US, or at least come the closest to rivaling us in quality?

Are there groups in China that could compete here? What about Brazil?

My guess is that Japan is the closest, followed by Europe. What do you guys think? I know many of you are very knowledgeable about the marching arts around the world.

Is there a region or even a country that can rival us? Where is it? Who comes the closest? satisfied.gif

I seriously dobut many, if any, foreign corps would pose a major threat to very few of the DCI Top 23. Granted, some of these corps from outside the U.S. are quite impressive and march and sound like an American corps. However, once on the field of competition it would show a major difference between the corps score wise. And yes, Japan would probably lead the pack with the UK a close second. Beyond that..........

  5. I would like to know why random political ads appear on the forum pages of DCP? I thought all forms of political messages, ads, etc was banned from these pages? I personally find some of these ads offensive. I further ask the powers that be in DCP to stop these one sides ads immediately. This site should remain politically neutral and feature no ads from either party.

  6. I have been watching a lot of older fan network videos the last couple days, and I noticed that in the late eighties there were several corps that had members with long hair sticking out of the back of their headgear (lots of guys with mullets). I don't know that I have seen any corps with that look in more recent times. Is this purely a function of more modern hair styles being short, or do corps require members to keep short hair or put it up in their hats? I imagine most corps (if not all) have rules about how to wear your hair when in uniform these days.

Also, are there any corps that have rules about facial hair for guys?

Or what about glasses, for that matter? I don't know that I have ever noticed a recent show with a member wearing glasses. I'm guessing that corps don't require members to get contact lenses or march without glasses, but it is a difference. That is probably the result of contact lenses becoming much more ubiquitous in more recent times.

In my HS band we had several girls who had really long hair. It always made me cringe when they let that long hair hang down from under their shakos. It looked liked hell. I tried to convince them to wear their hair up under their shako. A lot of good that did. Those girls with that long, stringy hair hanging out of their shakos made all 200 of us in the band look like a bunch of band geeks and goofs. Thinking about it makes we want to puke.

  7. What's your best or worst experiences?

I would have to say it was my rookie year back in '08. We were on our Nationals Tour. I think it was somewhere New Jersey, or was it MA., that I came down with strepth (sp) throat.

The hospital ER wanted to keep me over night. Problem was we were leaving that night after the show for another long, long drive to another far away state. I remember that long bus ride during a driving rain storm. Talk about bad luck. Our buses were almost brand new but for some reason my window seat had a leak. Drip, drip, drip all night. Soggy pillow and all. Bening a rookie I didn't want to complain. I didn't dare. Anyway, I don't remember ever being so miserable. After a few days and massive doses of antibiotic, I was back rehearsing and competing with the corps after a few days. That episode I will always remember.

  8. All this talk about the Cavaliers being in trouble is absurd. Even the best corps has an "off" season now and then. To say the Cavaliers were in trouble by placing as high as they did in finals is just plain silly. Many corps would love to wind up in finals as high as the Cavaliers did. I am certain they will be back in top form by next summer with a very competitive as well as entertaining show as always.

  9. Full Troopers staff is gone! I hope they get some people in there that create an EXCITING production and finally get that drumline and pit playing some real music!!

If this information is correct I couldn't be happier for the Troopers. They were somewhat of a disappointment this summer, especially program wise. I know with the proper changes and adjustments they will bounce back much stronger next summer. Hopefully they will go back to their original classic Trooper uniforms as well as their western roots. Good luck to them. We all wish them continued success!

  10. I don't think they make semifinals this year. I think they'll be 27th, or 26th at best - 28th at worst. I think 5 Open class corps beat them.

Based on recent scores listed on the DCI website as well as reviews I have read on various other sites, I would have to agree with PR ROCKS'100%. Maybe next year? Hang in there Pioneers!

By the way, I think it's BD all the way again come August 11th!!! CC will probably be a very close second. Good luck to all!

  11. We have a group of ex drum corps members and fans who will be attending this show at the Pleasant Hill Downtown on Crescent Drive in Pleasant Hill, CA. This will be my first theater showing as, up until this summer, I was a marching member. I have 3 years left to march. If nothing else I will march my age out year with my own corps.

  12. Probably can afford the Bentley because he/she lives in a PVC house with only folding chairs and some mirrors. And a giant rocking horse.

Couldn't be farther from the truth. The area the Bentley owner and I live in is a very exclusive area. Homes out here start at one million and upwards of five million plus. Not exactly a PVC house, whatever that is.

  13. Yes, with Texas license plates and a bumper sticker on it that read :

" Never give a young calf the bum steer "

Sorry to disappoint, however, it is a California license plate. And no, there were no fuzzy dice or calf skin seat covers. I found out the neighbor with the Bentley is a commercial developer. He owns lots of property in and around Northern and Southern CA. Why is everyone so bent out of shape over someone placing a BD bumper sticker on their car? They just peel off when you remove them leaving no damage to the vehicle. I think some people are just jealous. My dad drives a 2011 BMW 500 Series and yes I put a drum corps sticker on his bumper. Geeze!

  14. I just got back from Rockford. It was a great show, but the lowlight for me was the Blue Devils show. In my opinion, it was by far the least audience engaging show of the night. They went on first, and I liked all the shows that followed better. And the the judges put them in first by a comfortable margin? I understand they are an extremely talented group of kids, but aren't the new scoring sheets supposed to reward entertaining and engaging the audience? They sounded like they were back to bleeps and blops which the judges apparently still eat up. Play a frickin melody that will leave me humming to myself after the show.

My only other gripe is that there were no 'instant encores' this year at this TOC event. Disappointing. Guess the corps wanted to get out of there. Long drive ahead of them.

Otherwise, the show was great. Great venue. Nice summer evening. Phantom was great. Also enjoyed the Cadets much more than I thought I would.

Like BD or not, you must admit they are perhaps the most consistet and highly competitive corps on the field today. They have been exceptionally competitive, top 3 or better, for more years then I can remember. I agree, however, sometimes a corps can be very competitive and not very fan friendly.

  15. We have these new neighbors who just moved in three doors down the street. I couldn't help but notice they had a brand new Bentley. Upon closer inspection I noticed a BD bumper sticker and a BD license plate frame. Pretty cool stuff on a very cool and very expen$ive car. Talk about a small world!

  16. One thing I do NOT like about this year's Troopers is their choice of a new uniform. It's downright ugly. It reminds me of a teaterical costume. Why on earth would they even think of changing that classic Trooper uniform? Also, I wish they would go back to their western roots musically. The "old Troopers,"from the music to the drill, were always exciting. Even when they weren't that competitive. By the way, I have always been a Trooper fan and remain so.

  17. Of course it's always a major tragedy to lose any corps. It is especially difficult for the entire activity to lose a corps the caliber of Teal Sound. Losing them in midseason is even more difficult for everyone involved, especially the membership and staff. I know I speak for the entire drum corps activity when I extend our best wishes for a speedy return to the field of competition. Our hearts are with you, Teal Sound. God speed!

  18. Would there be any positive remifications? Negative ones?

It's not like a corps will have 400 and have a huge advantage, they'd have a TON to clean. But it'd be loud and get a huge group of kids involved.

    Your thoughts?

It seems to me it is difficult for even the top WC corps to be able to field the current limit of 150 members. To go beyond that, in my estimation, would not be a viable option. 150 marching members seems to work just fine. Just my two cents worth.

  19. This also pertains to a certain drum corps and it's status as a World Class unit. I just received an email from a dc friend of mine. He mentioned a certain WC corps he saw over the week end. According to him this corps was marching a horn line of 20 members total. He also questioned whether or not they deserved their current status as a WC corps. For obvious reasons I am not naming this corps. All I will say is that they are not a West Coast unit. I know that most corps face an off season now and then. Problem is this corps has been on a sort of downward spiral for a number of years now. Living on the West Coast, all the information I receive on this group are emails from friends of mine. Therefor I can not guarantee any of this information is 100% accurate. Your thoughts on this situation?

It's been a while since we've seen BD! How will they score after days of rehearsal? Will SCV close the gap a little more on PR? Will Pacific Crest do the same thing tonight at their home show to The Academy? We'll just have to see tonight!

I'll be there, anyone else? I'll try to post as often as possible, but I think I'll only be able to make it for the World-Class corps.

Lastly, best of luck to all the performing corps tonight. You ALL will be fantastic!

I will be there tonight. Looking forward to seeing my ex corps compete. It's going to feel very strange to see them on the field and not be a part of this year's corps. To think I spent three years with them. I still have two years left but I decided a good college is far more important then marching drum corps. I wish them well regardless.
