Vanguard won’t be back and it’s time to release Rennick and Gaines.

Gaines needs to go back to Cavies. Rennick can go be at troopers or help another corps elsewhere build up a percussion program. Though after this year everyone’s percussion was on fire sooooo

You might be right (I hope not) but it’s not over until they announce their intentions.

For Blue Stars, I'm going to say this and possibly get crushed for it, but I think their biggest problem has been show design. I love all that Michael Shapiro has done, but his ideas have not been connecting.

For Troopers' guard, the staging and writing was their biggest problem, not so much the techs. Their caption head seemed young and not that experienced.

Cavies issue this year, and last, has been show design. That show design was not at the same level of the corps ahead of them. To move up, they need to step that up a notch.

Cadets, Mandarins and Phantom are all trending way up, so they do not need to make any changes. Their shows were so good last year, and this year's were at another level. For Mandarins, I believe most, if not ALL, of their design team and caption heads are post-covid hires. They need to protect them at all costs.

Top 4 - they were all SO GOOD!! I don't expect any changes here either. All sections and areas of each are so superior. Even Crown's percussion was much improved the last week.

    Already can't wait for 2024!!

I feel that Troopers guard writing, staging and technique were all issues. They need to take a good look at all aspects of their guard program.

  3. Changes that are confirmed:

    • Madison Scouts - program coordinator and drill writer out.
    • Pyro Lugo-Allen out of Blue Knights
    • Lisa Tatum out as The Academy BCH

I know we won’t know any changes until September but what would you like to see happen?

    I’ll start….

    - Troopers need to find a top notch guard designer

    - Madison needs to have a big design rethink

    - Blue Stars need to think carefully about lessons learned in 2023 but I hope they keep all staff

-I really hope Cadets hang onto all their design staff- they are on to something with this years design (just ramp it all up for 2024!)

    - and of course I hope Vanguard make it out with all their current staff

    Your thoughts?

  4. I have total respect for what BD do and they are/will be the deserved winners tonight (based on the judging system). Their kids are amazing.

I often wonder if experts from outside the activity were watching (theatre directors, choreographers, brass band experts, drummers etc) who would they place first?

BD has the best show for the current judging system but some of the things they do (eg transitions between pieces) are just not my cup of tea and they don’t emotionally involve me like others do.

well, at worst Troopers can only be 12th in guard tomorrow

and this is probably why they will stay ahead of Blue Stars.  They can place no lower than 12th (not 17th) and therefore the spread will likely narrow between them in 12th and whoever is 11th in guard.

Troopers need a better designed guard book and mostly they need to work on technique in the guard

    So to start things off....

Commentary from last night seemd to be that Troopers had a bad run... I reckon they got that out of their system last night and tonight is much better... Good enough to catch Colts and lasso that elusive 90? I reckon so and THAT is my Reliable Rondo prediction for this evening.

They have to catch Blue Stars before they catch Colts lol

  7. My hope is they clean. The brass gets let off the leash, the percussion gets cleaner as the new quad players get more comfortable and the guard waters some of their book down and achieves much better (esp indoors - have you noticed how much larger BS’ silks are compared to regular silks? So indoors will def help!).

If the guard gets clean and the percussion is top 12(!) it may well save the day!

I think less shows will also help. Can't change things if you constantly have shows and lose more time traveling to show sites.

But I'll say it again Brad Furlano and Brad Harris make sure the members have a great experience and they are some of the greatest people I have ever met. They run a world class organization and I appreciate the hell out of them.

I suspect doing lots of shows helps contribute to their finances. I know they are one of the few corps who operate in the black. But you are right, having no time to make changes because your doing shows so often, definitely hasnt helped.

Well from what I recall in 2015 when this happened was judges don't really have anything to say that can make it better and the ways to make it better are almost complete rewrites. They came out strong with a great blue print but it didn't change while others did. They also had the most shows all season I believe and feedback is great when something works but can only do so much when it isn't. I still love the show and risk and if you gave this design to BD or Bluecoats it wins.

But I can tell you that the members are being taken care of really well and apparently DCI does a survey every year about experience and last year they were #2. So I don't expect a firing squad if that's what you're into but a better designed product to make up what this didn't.

I definitely don’t expect/or think there will be a firing squad and that wouldn’t be a smart move. More likely some soul searching and better planning for 2024

Section scores are good - design sections are bad. Judges don't like it but give credit to members for performing it well. It's exactly a it didn't work let's fix the problem next year. It's sideshow part 2 not 2012.

What I don’t understand is they have had all season to make changes and fix some of the design and performance issues but out of the World class corps, BS seem to have made the least changes (implying the staff believed it was good design).  It also seems out of all World class corps they have improved the least. Hence why many of us believed they were fighting for 5-8th at the start of the season but now are sitting in 11th with 12th place breathing down their necks!

Would love to know what had happened!

  11. Something worth considering when people complain about Cadet’s costumes and props is that they have no money - they lost sponsorships (thanks to you know who) and therefore are being smart and spending within their means which results in cost effective costumes and low cost props and given all that, they are doing an outstanding job.

  12. I too am baffled. They normally evolve their show during the season and have a plan but this year it’s basically the same show they premiered with, give or take a few minor tweaks and hasn’t really got much better. Hence their score stuck at 87.

This isn’t typical of this design team so I wonder what has gone on in the background?

I suspect they will fair much better indoors and their guard score will keep them competing for 9-11th spot.

They got a 92 in content last night why would you want to water that score? They had a guard member get a hand injury which if you watched all summer also hit the flag triangle on the 50. Could be the same person that started in the cube. Everyone marches holes all summer from sick to injured sitting out to injured sent home. Why put someone out there that's hurt just to fill a space. And if you march your dots correctly then it doesn't matter because you maintain the presence of a hole and get rewarded

Having a constant hole in their opening rifle and then flag work on the cubes has to be hurting.

Why water some parts down?  Because whilst they had a 92 for content they had an 87 for achievement. And somehow they have to close the gap between the WHAT and the HOW. There has to be some compromise and their overall dirtiness is going to hurt visual and GE scores.

  14. Maybe they have had lots of internal member turnover this summer - I'm am not in the know but they have been constantly marching gaps (look at the opening rifle and flags in the cubes) and their show has neither evolved that much nor gotten significantly cleaner, like it normally does.  I hope they are going to water some parts down (esp guard) since by finals, no one gets points for attempting but never achieving stuff!
