I think this is sort of what I’m referring to.

I get the feeling they’re throwing stuff in to get a bunch of points with the judges regardless of whether it actually works in the show.

It’s sort of like watching gymnastics, or ice-skating, where they are required to include a number of compulsory acts to rack Up points with the judges.

This will always be an activity that balances technical exposition with what we now call general effect. We’re definitely moving now more toward GE having more weight, but I still feel like that has a lot more emphasis on visual that musical.

Yes, skating really comes to mind as something that seems to work the same way.  The 'component' scores can really add up for skaters.  Things like deep edges and other skating skills, transitions, artistic interpretation, etc.

  2. What makes a great Devils Show?

Why, it's the Devils Swagger - of course!  Also, loud.  It must be loud to be great.

I loved Metamorph SO very much.  It became one of my top five of all time.  It really got me to appreciate the inner workings, history, traditions, motifs that all make BD the amazing corps that it is.  Didn't hurt that I spent a face-melting afternoon watching a full ensemble rehearsal of that show.  I was able to key in on their process.

The competition is just tough.  A lot of good corps even in this tier.  Music City really came out strong this year.

And BDB hasn’t had a score in almost a week.  Looks like their next show is in a few days, and something tells me OC won’t be 23rd after that.

I said this earlier, that OC is not a lock for semis.  Someone on here strongly disagreed with me... but I stand by my assertion.  Yes, the competition is just too strong at thNopeis level.Nope

Genesis jumps over OC. Tight between 19-21. Can't wait to see them all at semifinals. Hopefully all 3 make it.

Looking at open and world rankings combined, OC is in 23rd right now.  I don't understand what is happening to this show that, early on,  seemed early like it would develop into something more competitive in the lower tier.

  5. I vote for Troop.  This is my favorite show from them in awhile.  I love the way they use Both Sides Now as a dividing point for both the storyline and the music.  The Americana identity is still firmly entrenched, yet it comes off as a modern drum corps show.  It deserves to be on the big screen.

That being said, I wouldn't be upset if Pac Crest snuck into that 15th spot.  I've said it many times this year and I'll say it again.  I REALLY LIKE THEIR SHOW!

I am hoping Bluecoats win it all because they have a kick butt corps and a kick butt musical program that actually sounds (And feels) completely different than any other corps.

It almost plays like an over-the-top stage show that might be seen at a gigantic Vegas venue... and I mean this in the best possible way.  It most certainly has a different sound AND look than any other corps.

My dear old mother is a big jazz fan and I'm really excited for her to see this show on Saturday.  It will knock her socks off.

True confession:  I want to be the singer in that show.

I dont aee how OC is that far from PC. OC show flows and is more entertaining/engaging IMO. They seem to have stalled while everyone else keeps going.

I hope OC is getting a replacement for the injured featured dancer.  If not, that will hurt them.

I really like PC's show though... a lot of charm, nuance and better execution.

Saw your show in Denver and just rewatched the San Antonio video. I seriously got goosebumps a couple times watching this show.  The back half of the show is fantastic!  Great progress and if you haven’t watched the video of their back field conductor, please do so.

Another thread is begging flo to get a shot of PC's dancing DM!

  9. I'd be happy if flo just cut to the actual thing that is happening more consistently.  It is a little better this year, but I still see shots of quads not being played while off camera I can hear the snares.  Or, why show the featured dancer running deep into the tunnel before the final notes of the show are heard?  Some of the details they choose to shoot make me scratch my head, like guard changing flags - something I never used to see when it was fan network.

But yes, I'd love to see PC's dancing DM!  Let's keep our fingers crossed.

I too have to give credit where credit is due, and Music City has an absolutely fabulous, approachable program this year. It's a ton of fun, not to mention the corps offers up a super unique & memorable show design in a tier that not all drum corps fans pay attention to (unfortunately).

There are some super fun shows in that 16-20 tier, right alongside Music City.  Pac Crest has fielded a delightfully charming, nuanced, feel good show, one of my top picks this year for entertainment value.  OC's creepy take on 'The Shining' is starting to gel.  These are not to be missed shows!

Also, in DCI Drum Corps not all "missed, botched solos " are handled the same either. For example, if a solo is totally flubbed and becomes a " train wreck " ( as you said ) due to an engineering malfunction ( an adult creativity ) during the show, DCI judges will overlook this.  However, if a performer solo is similarly flubbed in execution and delivery, and thus becomes a " train wreck" the DCI judges will take a far less forgiving stance on these types of botched solos in the points they will then assign.

Which, I believe, is the only fair way to handle two very different scenarios.

  12. Drum corps is not technically a sport BUT it seems to me to be very similar to figure skating, which IS a sport.   In figure skating, routines are judged on artistic quality and technical components, just like drum corps.  Music choice, drill/choreography/interpretive movement, ease of flow, tricks, execution - both skating and drum corps depend on these elements to score high.

The difference is, in skating, a top ranked skater could flub one or more Axels or Lutzes that would severely affect his or her score, whereas in drum corps, those big train wrecks just don't happen, or if they do, with, say a missed rifle catch, it only involves a member or two, and doesn't ruin the whole performance enough to tank the score.

IMO that is why the pecking order remains fairly locked all season.

I sometimes wish huge upsets would happen regularly as well.  Once in awhile they do, but it is certainly not common.
