For Immediate Release:
DCM to Alter Dekalb Championship Format and Extend Season in 2005
On Saturday October 25, 2004 in Mounds View, Minnesota there were 13 corps represented at Drum Corps Midwest’s first general membership meeting concerning the 2005 Season and it was promptly called to order at 11am by Board Chair, Brent Turner.
To open the meeting each attendee gave their name and how they first were introduced to drum corps. Throughout the room, the story was very similar even though some had joined drum corps in 1954 and some had joined in the Late 80s. Many people had met their spouses and had children that had marched drum corps. Bob Abbott of the Joliet Kingsmen quieted the room when he stated, “ take drum corps out of my life and I would die, right now.” It reminded all that drum corps is a fragile organism, yet an essential element to the few of us left with performing units in the activity.
The first item of business was to highlight the successes of the 2003 season; included were 12 shows, and 5 parades that paid our units $82,975. An updated Grand Finale put a Patriotic finish to all of our shows, and these finales will continue this year. Dekalb Championships were a huge success due to the DCM Armed Forces Tribute theme that was supported by The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps. The addition of The Renegades Drum and Bugle Corps made the Senior Corps competition fun to watch as they battled it out with the Midwest Powerhouse of Minnesota Brass, Incorporated.
The Executive Board made a report on their meeting with the MACBDA band circuit (http://www.macbda.org/) that runs during the summer months concurrently with the DCM tours. DCM members approved the Executive Board to continue collaborative talks with MACBDA circuit members and even extended the invitation for 2 of the Championship MACBDA bands to perform on Saturday July 9th at The Dekalb, Illinois DCM Championships. These exciting talks will continue between the two groups, since the symbiotic relationship seems mutually beneficial.
Other changes and traditions for the DCM Championships were explored and restored. On Friday July 8, in the evening, Drum Corps Midwest will present a concert in the park to entertain fans and the community of Dekalb to build on the success of last years concert which brought out about 800 community members and drum corps fans. Preliminary competition will return on Saturday morning, with a clinic for the 8-10 MACBDA bands tentatively scheduled for Saturday afternoon. The format for Championship Competition on Saturday night will be cut back to between 10-12 performing units: The 4 Division Champions + the next two highest scoring corps will perform, along with the 2 champion MACBDA marching bands (tentative until approved by MACBDA). Also included will be 2-4 Exhibition units from all over the USA and potentially abroad. The Executive Board was given permission to seek corps such as Renegades and others to help support the 2005 Dekalb DCM Championships. Additionally, 13 or more Individual and Ensemble events will be held on Sunday July 10 where DCM will initiate the Midwest to Mini-Corps performances. The much loved drum corps social and athletic events will also return to Sunday as well.
Under Contest rules, the DCM body voted to approve amplification and the 8 1/2-11 1/2 show timing for all corps. All corps were encouraged to keep shows at 10 minutes minimum if at all possible and very severe monetary penalties were approved for shows that are under time. The Body voted to keep the DCM finale and contest critique from previous years in place.
In order to support a circuit of community drum corps the DCM membership will continue to host mostly weekend shows. With corps that attend both DCI and DCA finals competition, DCM could see shows running from June 18- Mid-August as some of their units prepare for Final Competitions.
Overall, the tone was positive and DCM is excited to present its 27th year of competitive entertainment by supporting marching musical groups that are educational while also positively developing our members.
