A great way to close out the year - playing new music and meeting new people!!

  3. The Sunrisers are pleased to announce their 2009 Program!

    Homage: Three Tapestries

For centuries, tapestries were used to tell stories and portray historical events. Kings and nobles collected these beautiful works as status symbols. Churches created ornate scenes to tell stories of the bible. Great battles were recounted in vivid color and detail. The Sunrisers will, through this majestic piece by David Holsinger, weave their tapestries.

    Movement I – Regnum

    Movement II – Sacra

    Movement III – Proelium

The Sunrisers are happy to be back and are very excited to present this dramatic and dynamic show in 2009!

We will be rehearsaing this Sunday, December 14th and Sunday, December 28th from 1-6pm at the Christ Church Parish House, 1355 Northern Blvd. Manhasset, NY 11030.

    GOOD LUCK

"On the field from. Mineola, Long Island, N.Y."

    The "Sunrisers ".

Sounded Good way back then. Sounds GREAT NOW!

Thanks! For me, it's a return back to where I started with the Sunrisers! I cannot wait for the Open House and seeing all my friends!

  10. Definately use a metronome and start slow. Make sure you stroke out the second note on each hand (as previous posters have indicated). Gradually increase your speed. Make sure your sound and stick height is even hand-to-hand. You have to listen and watch yourself. When it goes bad, take it back a notch. As you increase tempo, use the tension of the drum head to get your bounce. I always told the kids I've taught that they are their own best tech, so listen and watch what you are doing! Couple hours a day and you'll be good to go in no time!

I've always found it helpful when working rolls with lines to be able to play rolls starting on the left hands as well as the right. This will even out your rolls, hand-to-hand and avoid the pulsing you hear in bad lines. It is very awkward (and dirty) for a beginner line to play it on the left, but when you switch back to right, generally everyone is surprised by the result.

    Good luck!!!

All good advice! I would add that you should practice in front of a mirror. You then get visual cues to help. You can see uneven stick height, hand positions where you are hitting - V-shape for sticks. Also, timed exercises are good, in addition to the long repetitive exercises. 30-second sprints, 1-minute sprints (using max speed with good form) will help.

Good luck - stick with it!
