  1. I’ve been on DCP for years and never thought to ask about this, but I’m curious to hear the rest of the details (maybe from the person who played that position).

4 or 5 days before DCI South in Birmingham, Tommy Keenum called my percussion instructor and told him the 5th bass player had an injury (broken leg, pelvis, something) and asked if he had anyone who could/would join them and finish the tour with the Cadets.  My instructor asked me if I was interested and I jumped at the chance.  I was already set to go to DCI South, so I was told to pack a bag and meet them at the busses after the competition.  I feel fairly certain they marched 4 basses that night, but it has been over 30 years, so I may be wrong.  I went to the Cadets’ busses afterwards and tracked down Tommy, but he said the player was doing better and they were going to stick with what they had.  I was disappointed, but it makes sense.  On Finals night, they marched 5 bass drums, so I’m assuming the player recovered, or they plugged in someone else.  Of course they went on to win, and got high drums (I believe)!  Would have been a great year to be a part of.  Watching the show now, I don’t know how I would have learned everything in 2 weeks well enough to perform at that level - having never marched drum corps or played in a bass line.  Anyway, I was just curious about what happened on the Cadets side, and if the 5th bass player did actually get well enough to march Finals.  I always pay close attention to that spot whenever I watch the show.  Thanks

  2. I try to fashion my choice based on the person I'm showing, if I know anything at all about them. My wife, then girlfriend, loves Phantom of the Opera, so I showed her SCV 1988. My nephew is on the ROTC drill team, so I went Cavaliers "Machine" and some 70's shows to illustrate the precision. In the past, people who have no idea about marching anything have responded well to Velvet Knights, Crown's Rock Star show, BD 1999, stuff like that. In all cases, the person wanted to see more, and in a few cases went to a live show with me.

  3. DCI is working on the production of the next installment now. It will be called "Classics" and feature iconic and beloved performances that did not win a title, but represent remarkable achievements in the activity for innovation, entertainment, and corps history. Look for it later this spring.

I was wondering about this - whether a Vol 3 Champions would come out or an alternate collection (2nd place finishes, or fan favorite) since both the 98 Cadets and 04 Cavies might hold up the process. I'm only basing that on their unavailability on the Fan Network for download. I'll take whatever they want to remaster and put out though - I love the 2 blurays collections they've released so far.

  4. You don't like needing a shower five seconds after stepping out of one's air-conditioned hotel? And you don't like your hotel room staying warm even with the AC on full blast and the curtains pulled during the day because your room faces south? (Not that I'm bitter.) Do you have something against giant bugs crawling up your leg while sitting still at the stadium? All those things build character!

I'm FROM Jackson and I hated Finals in Jackson. Other than not having to travel. I'd take Legion Field in Brimingham any day over the Vet. Loved the shows that year though. Star didn't click with me at the time (although I was rooting for them due to knowing a few members), but watching again more recently I like it a lot.

  5. I used to have a Santa Clara shirt that was just green with a white SCV on the front, and a man came up to me and said he was a member too. He was probably in his 70's, so I was thinking Wow, when did HE march? So I said Really, you marched in Santa Clara Vanguard? And he suddenly looked disappointed and said No, I thought it was Sons of Confederate Veterans, and walked off.

  6. I was at the DLB in Indy (right behind the DCI camerman, and probably right next to garfield without knowing it) and had a great time! My nephew and I got there early so we could get a good spot, and we were also lucky enough to be underneath the skywalk so that the sun wasn't much of a factor. Standing up for almost 5 hours got old, but the performances made up for that. I think going forward the performances will be even better as the concept will now be clearer to competing lines. The groups that progressed the furthest had more entertainment elements in their pieces (and obviously E-Sarn was the prime example of this) and did more than just play a piece standing perfectly still. I, for one, will be attending any future DLB events I can.

  7. Watched on PBS a few times, but 1st live performance was 1988 DCI South in Birmingham, AL. The first corps (which I had to look up to remember) was Marauders. They started the show with a company front playing Toccata & Fugue in D Minor by Bach - blew me away! The mono speaker on our TV didn't do the volume justice. And it just got better from there. Saw SCV, Madison, Spirit, Skyriders, Velvet Knights, Suncoast...it was a great show. Bought my first drum corps t-shirt (SCV Phantom of the Opera tour shirt) and cemented me as a lifetime fan.

  8. What an amazing show! I am so glad I was able to attend Finals this year. Seeing Crown live was so much better than the online or theater shows (to be fair, they all were). And the encore performance was even better...probably because I wasn't holding my breath the entire time. :)

I've never been present for a Finals encore, so this may be the norm, but it appeared that every member on the field was smiling ear-to-ear through the whole thing. Especially the 2 young women doing the counting/narration - so much emotion just from them.

What's the record for most standing ovations in a show?

Anyway, absolutely love this show and can't wait for the Finals blu-rays to come out so I can watch it over and over.

  9. 2008 and 2012 BD - neither have cracked my Top 10 or anything, but I do like them much more after having watched them several times.

2007 Cadets - the 1st time I watched this show I stopped about halfway through, it annoyed me so much. I was so annoyed that I would make other people watch it so they could be as annoyed as I was. Then, I was finally able to block out the voice over (to some degree) and really appreciate the music and marching going on. I think this show in Indy, with pre-recorded voice-over might work better and wouldn't seem as jarring now.

1999 SCV - I know, seems impossible, but the first time I watched it I was underwhelmed. It was late, I was tired maybe. By the 3rd time I watched it I was a huge fan. One of my all time favorites now.

  10. I was asked to come fill in the 5th bass drum spot with the '90 Cadets a few weeks before Finals due to an injury, but by the time I met up with them at DCI South in Birmingham they had decided to stick it out with the original player (or at least go with someone already there - I can't remember exactly which). I was bummed - closest I came to ever marching DCI - but I'm glad the guy who had put in all that time and effort got to finish the season...especially since they won it all, and drums to boot. Watching the show now, even coming from a corps-style marching program in high school, it's intimidating to think of having to learn that drill in 2 weeks.

  11. Unrelated to any actual corps performances from last night, the Volume 2 blu-ray got the biggest responses in the theater. Not surprising since they were showing some of the best moments in drum corps history. But after Steve Rondinaro set up the great restoration job, then it cuts to '76 BD looking like worn out VHS footage I kept expecting a before/after kind of reveal. Sounded great though. I've watched Volume 1, so I know the older shows DO look much better, but probably not best to blow it up to theater size. Anyway, Spartacus had everybody cheering as usual.

In an effort to be more on topic, I enojyed several of the shows last night, but Cadets were my favorite. I'm a huge Barber fan though, so they could have just stood still and played and I would have liked it. May not surpass '99 SCV in my favorites list, but really looking forward to seeing it again in August.

  12. Went to the Premier show at the theater last night - Cadets' show was my favorite of the night! Of course, they had me at Samuel Barber, but still they played the HECK out of it. It was like the volume got turned up in the theater when they came on. I'm really looking forward to seeing it again in August.

  13. Ahem! Not to be vain but. it's DCI so I get my licensing dollar:

    from this same thread...

drilltech1, on 30 May 2013 - 09:55 AM, said:last year, many people didn't comprehend or understand the show.

This season, we won't be able to see the forest without the trees???? :rolleyes:/>/>/>/>/>

and also previously mentioned on this thread was that the tree idea was swiped/borrowed/lifted/mimics what a Texas band did in BOA and UIL years ago. (but that's like the chairs from Les Chatelaines, etc.)

I figured someone else probably posted a similar joke/pun already. Yours is better said. I won't infringe on your copyright though, and just stick to my cornier version.

  14. Ha; as the first drum corps fan to publicly post that corny joke, I think you owe it to us all, and have earned the right, to post it constantly this summer :tongue:/>

As my wife would say, "Please don't encourage him."

It would be funny the first week. Maybe I should post it 100 times in honor of the 100 trees. Or have a custom t-shirt made up to wear to performances.

  15. so are they really going to have 100 tree props ...

If they do, I'll be the guy making the horrible joke "I can't see the Corps-est for the trees." at every performance.

Because, yep, that's my level of humor. :)

I promise to only post it once on here though. It's my family you should feel sorry for...for many reasons.

  16. Ok, I have committed to taking my nephew to Finals this year as a birthday/graduation present. Plus, I get to go too, so win/win. It's been 20 years since my last live DCI show (also, the only Finals I was able to attend), so it feels like time to go again.

Anyway, reading a lot on here about best seats and such, and this thread about getting tickets. Best seats online via Ticket Master are not ideal, but I haven't called them yet. I would think that might still work IF there are seats in the optimal sections still available. Also, buying from a individual corps MIGHT reap similar results as several still list those sections as a possibility. I'm thinking I'll call Ticket Master first, since that would be a definite purchase of tickets in the section I wanted, then try the crap shoot of buying through a corps.

I'm not going to stress about it TOO much, since I know my nephew will enjoy the show regardless. Anyway, if anyone has any more good tips I'd appreciate them. Thanks.

  17. I bought 2-3 shirts a year when I went to live shows in high school, and it was usually a combination of best design and corps I liked the most at that moment. Being a drummer, I had to get a BD drumline shirt, but I also got the SCV Phantom shirt, etc. I like perc2100's ides for retro shirts, because I would love to have a few of those shirts back.

  18. '88 SCV - the two-part company front at the end...Music of the Night push starts in an arc, slight pause as they hit the straight line, kick the horns up and take the volume to 11 while the crowd goes wild. '89 BD with their power triangle push in If We Were in Love did a similar two-part front. (They loved their trangles back then.)

'88 Madison - Melo solo/cymbal feature to the end (wish we could see the drill there) - favorite moment: as the camera pulls out and the guy on the sidelines is jumping up and down with his arms raised as if he KNOWS they just won. And oh how I miss having the PBS commentary on the DVDs - They are on their feet here at Arrowhead Stadium! Ladies and gentlemen, you may very well have just seen the championship performance of the night!

2003 Phantom - the Canon reprise to the end, plus the emotional guard member still spinng her flag at the end gets me.

    2006 Phantom - you had me at Mahler's 2nd.

2008 Phantom - nuff said. Although, as an aside, when Spartacus' wife/girfriend is dropped after her throat is cut A) the guard member did a great job selling the fall and B) the crowd gasps and is like "He really just droped her!"

2007 BD - the music is great, but it's the drum major that gets me. He's about to trun to the crowd after they've finished but he pauses and has this look he gives the corps like they just donated a kidney to him or something.

    Plenty more...
