  1. I'm a selling my 3-valve Dynasty mellophone in G. It was previously owned by the Blue Stars and then I used it as part of the Madison Scouts Alumni Reunion project in 2006 and then purchased it after. It is in excellent condition. If interested, please let me know and I can forward pictures. Price is negotiable!

  2. Wow! Some of you folks need to lighten up. But to answer the original question (our son will be on his third tour with Cavies next summer), there are a lot of reasons why cell phones - and especially the now omnipresent smart phones - become huge distractions and problems anytime during the season, even pre-tour when a lot of first-time corps parents would be most anxious to find out how their kid is doing. We were just as anxious the first year but we learned that no news was mostly good news.

    1. First and most obvious, instead of making friends, developing new relationships and/or just learning a lot of important new lessons about how to learn to adapt and fit in when immersed in a very stressful environment amid a sea of mostly strangers, kids with their phones tune out and just communicate with their same old cell phone/facebook/twitter/whatever circle and ignore the most important people and things that are going on in the real world around them.

    2. Worse yet, the real people around them just become convenient gossip and complaint fodder for the entertainment of their essentially useless non-present virtual pals, a very counterproductive behavior that tends to compound problems.

    3. And then there is the additional distraction from productive attention and healthy socialization that is inevitable, especially among young males suddenly without any regular contact with females their own age, with the "smart" phones' abilities to easily tap a world-wide ocean of porn, more or less continuously. The allure of such stuff usually isn't as obvious to us parents as it is glaringly apparent to our kids.

Plenty of the Cavies kids will cheat and turn in dummy phones and keep their real phones stashed, but the rule at least makes their use furtive and infrequent, and makes the social atmosphere, especially in their off time, a heck of a lot more healthy that what prevails around the other corps that do nothing to deter cell-phone obsession.

Thanks for the response. This is great information and I am glad to hear from a current parent. This has been helpful and we would want nothing more than for our son to follow his dream and be a Cavalier!

  3. Here's some perspective you may find of interest. The rule had been set aside for—I don't remember how long, but I think a couple—years. It was re-instituted this past year...not by the decision of the management or staff but at the request of the members. That's right...the "junior officers" of the corps...the members who are the leaders among the membership, asked the management to reinstate the rule. (I found out how that transpired in a pre-season message sent out to corps alums.)

Thanks Michael! I find that really interesting! My son is a diehard Cavaliers fan and having some idea what to expect before auditioning is obviously important to his mother and I.

  4. Thanks for your perspective. I am taking it that you are not a parent!!!! My son has no qualms with the no cell phone thank you very much! It is me, AS A PARENT, that is asking the question. All I was asking for was a little perspective!

Irrespective of your questioning, it is their rule so just deal with it; in fact I personally like the rule for many, many reasons. However if you are concerned about your son not being able to call mommy when he wants with a cell phone, and your son is upset that he would not be able to text his girlfriend every five min, there are 22 other WC corps and 19 OC corps in which your son can audition.

  5. I have a question for any current Cavaliers, alumni, or parents. My son wants to be a Cavalier more than anything and wants to audition this year. As a parent, I have a question about not allowing members to carry cell phones during the summer. It states that parents can email or call to communicate with their sons but how do the members communicate back to their families over the summer? I know it is different from the '80s when I marched when we had to wait in lines at a pay phone to call home, but pay phones are not readily available anymore. How easy is it for current members to contact their families? Also, anybody have any idea why this rule of no cell phone came about? In this day and age, I would think this would be common practice to allow members to carry phones.

    Any help would be appreciated!

  6. Hopefully they can field a full corps

Right now about 80+ members for 2013. Full battery, need a few more front ensemble, and a few color guard. Main area that is needed is brass section! Great show concept and great teaching staff this year. Check out their website for more info!

  7. Looking forward to the season too! Great music has been chosen for this year! Can't wait to see it on the field because it's music that the audience will be able to hum to and remember when they are leaving the stadium! Can't say that about many shows these days! Placement doesn't matter. All that matters is Better Every Day!
