VERN ACKLIN CAVALIERS - The corps was started in 1929 by John Young Scoutmaster of Verona Pennsylvania Troop 1. John wanted an activity that would fit into scouting and something to keep area boys occupied and out of trouble. He recruited Bill Millinen to instruct Drums and Charlie Acklin to instruct bugles. Vern, Ken, and Dale became members of the corps amt troop. Vern was an accomplished percusionist and became very active instructing and corps leadership. After WWII John Young turned corps equipment over to returning corps members. John also suggested the corps name VERN ACKLIN MRMORIAL DRUM AND BUGLE CORPS. Vern had passed away in 1946. In the 1950's Norm Frick and Buck Blank original corps mrmbers became leaders. Then Paul Dachile became corps commander and continued John Youngs role of helping Verona area kids. I am Vern's nephew.
