  1. Congratulations! I, too stumbled across DCP about 13 years ago, when I was first introduced to this wonderful activity. I marched 03-06 and then took a bunch of years off from drum corps, then re-found the activity again in 2012 when I met my now wife. I forgot/lost my old account info, so this is my new one.

Here's to many more years and posts!

  2. Because the uniforms they wear don't fit the show. It would be great to see Cadets ditch the old look completely for something fresh. I applaud them for taking a step and changing the colors and adding the stone look, but they could have gone all the way and ditched the shakos and military look of the jacket. Maybe this is one step towards it. Many I'm missing it, but I've never seen a statue of someone wearing a shako and plume. Put any of these uniforms on a WGI Percussion group and would look so out of place now a-days. At least in WGI, what they wear is an attempt to match the detail of the show, the floor, etc.

There's no Music City Mystique Uniform or Rhythm X uniform so why is it different when it's outside during the summer?

I've never heard anyone ever mention eye protection in all my years of marching. If it's a concern, every drum corps should wear their headgear during the day and definitely during late night ensemble for those extremely bright stadium lights.

I think the point of the headwear of any form is to make the unit a) look "uniform," and b) make them look TALLER. The difference between the WGI groups and DCI groups is the size of the venue. In WGI, there really is no need for headwear, because it is more of a personal, closer venue where seeing facial expressions adds more to the show. The audience at a DCI show is much further away, and typically outdoors. To me, a corps looks short and incomplete when they're not wearing a shako or aussie, or whichever headwear they choose.

  3. I personally prefer finishes myself. Wraps are a great thing for schools who can't get new drums every year or want something a little more graphic, but IMO you can't beat authentic. Not a big deal to me though.

I totally agree. A nice lacquer is gorgeous, but I am still intrigued by the wraps that come out every year. Even the high school line I teach uses them. Also, I've noticed in a lot of the pictures I've seen from spring training thus far, that there are a lot of black drums, which tells me they're probably going to be wrapped soon. Can't go wrong with a solid black finish though.

  4. Just want to say that every year this is without a doubt my favorite pre-season thread! As a percussionist, and even worse a 'Gear Head,' I always love seeing these drums, especially up-close as often the FN feed makes it difficult to really get a sense of how beautiful these drums are.

Thanks for the pics and updates, folks!

Yes! I totally agree. I like the drums more than the uniforms haha.
