  1. I really think they will be a lot closer to Bluecoats than anyone thinks they will be this weekend.

I think a big thing is they are on a huge competitve island lately, no one that's close to them is competing with them so the judges aren't going to throw out too big of numbers.

I was telling myself the same thing. Then I realized, it doesn't seem like the judges mind throwing out big scores for BD on their island though :( Maybe I'm just not regarding the field very well. One can hope :)

  2. Okay people, here's how I see it. DCI is art! An art form. So first, people are entitled to their own opinions. People didn't like Rite of Spring. People didn't understand Picasso. Plenty of people think Pollack is a hack. Famous art? Oh yeah. Criticized? Definitely. That's the great thing about art. You appeal to different people. It's ok if you don't like every show, and it's ok if you talk to someone that doesn't agree with you.

Second, stop caring about the scoring and the placement. The system of judging art is terrible and will always be terrible. Can you imagine having a contest across time and handing out medals to the best symphony composers in a one time performance? Mahler #2, Symphonie Fantastique, Shostakovich 5, New World, and Tchaik 6? Let's see if ranking those brings out the best in us.

So BD (Yankees, Lakers, Cowboys, Patriots, Cardinals, etc...) won again. Forget the scores because they shouldn't matter. Enjoy the art. Relish your favorite shows, and put the youtube on repeat. I'm a crown fan all the way, and I'm going to bed very happy!

  3. Congratulations BD. Since 1984, only one corps had placed 2nd at semis and then won an unshared title at finals: the 2008 Phantom Regiment. And now the 2015 Blue Devils.

That was a great performance tonight.

It's just too bad the it wasn't a crowd favorite/GE powerhouse that Phantom had. Yes, true stat, but feels like apples and oranges.

  4. And people debate whether adding these new endings makes a difference. When I saw Carolina in Akron early season, I knew they were top 5 good, but with their ending at that time I was not sure if they could climb into top 3. There were a few other changes needed in their show. Ultimately, they seem to have made the right changes and they are the only corps of the top 4 to truly clean the pants off this thing. I think they win Gold tomorrow, and it seems many others do as well.

You almost had to wonder when you saw their show early in the year. There HAD to be something new. I just thought to myself "really...that ending...from crown?...surely there has to be more." And then there was more.

  5. Just saw on FB:

The drum line used a dr. beat during the warm up. Apparently it's a DCI rule. Scott didn't know

This is confusing. Either, how did you not get a penalty all year long? Or, why would you use something you've never used all year for the last three shows? Or, how are you in an elite class, like BD, and not know that rule? Side note: Anyone found a link where these rules are located? Very curious IF this infraction is true.

  6. You and me both!

I'm listening only, so that means only a little bit. BD horns don't sound quite together tonight. Cadets drums and horns sounded incredible.

Just based on my ears, I have it Cadets, Crown, BD, Bloo, SCV.

It is really interesting to get sound only. Based on that, you can place the corps in completely different places than they will end up. I think you are pretty close. Cadets have been taking first in music for the past few weeks, and placing 3rd in one of those. It's a good reminder for me that I need to remember that there's more than just brass and percussion they are judging.

  7. Yeah, I love their show and hornline, but they sounded a little off their game tonight. Still phenomenal but I heard the same as you.

I heard the same thing. The early entrance and note length matching was the most noticeable. They probably do have close to the most transparent and isolated entrances. It was very uncharacteristic. I was beginning to question the recording equipment. HA!

  8. I'm not watching DCI Live! today. I'm not going to the theater. I'm listening to what I call "Drum Corps Radio".

I have the DCI YouTube Front Sideline Entrance Tunnel Cam running on my computer and they are using the audio feed from the DCI Live! broadcast. So while I'm puttering around the house, I have great drum corps music to listen to.

    Awesome!!

This is a great idea! Thanks for the post. I'm no longer puttering around the house with a passive aggressive look on my face.

  9. Percussion scoring question here. Crown's percussion score has always seem to be the weak link. However, this year they seemed much stronger and cleaner. They were scoring really high and placing second or third for awhile. Now it seems like it's back to the old ways. 5th and 6th in Houston? Were they being scored incorrectly at the beginning of the season? Has everyone else just gotten that much better than Crown? Is it just "the way things are" (a conspiracy theorist's option)? HA! I'd appreciate any analysis or insight.

  10. So, I've never marched with a corps, and was needing to pick the brains of the vets out there. My question originates from this season from Crown but has undoubtedly occurred with other corps through history.

So, Crown won last year after years of building and vying for that top stop. It finally happens! Expectations for next year are super high. They come out this year starting in the top 3. Okay, they bounced around there for years. Then they slip to fourth, and then fifth. Seeing as their score dropped below 90, it may not be out of the question to go down to 6th.

Same thing with the Blue Knights from 97-2001. Got all the way up to 6th and then BAM, out of the top 12. And the same with the Cavies from 07-12. They hover around second or third for 5 years and then down to 8th. As I said, there are probably many examples.

The Question: What is going through the heads of staff and members at this point in the year? Have they just given up? Do they feel like they are just "pissin' on a bonfire", where nothing they do helps? Do they keep fighting the good fight? Does arguing break out, and the blame game begin? So, veterans of the game, what more than likely is going on in corps on years like this?

  11. I've had friends marching BK since 2002. There were definitely enjoyable shows, but always maintaining their "dark" theme. I think this show, since 02, is their best complete package for a show. I've never heard a crowd react to a BK show like I did in Dallas the other night.

Question for the discerning eyes: Does the uniform look baggy on the majority of the corps? I'm mainly referring to the bibbers/pants, but there are jackets in question as well. I'm of the understanding that most corps do a re-tailoring halfway through the season due to weight loss :) Do you think this is the problem, or is it the design/engineering of the uniform/materials?
