Santa Clara is just Phenomenal! The show is a visual masterpiece. Musically I like a lot of it but not all of it. I feel the first 1/3 of the show fails to grab me. The last 1/3 is like the greatest thing I've ever seen!!!  For me I guess it's the brass book. At the onset of the show it's highly technical but does not pull me in. What saves the first half or more of the show for me (musically speaking) is that incredible pit. The quality of the pit and the scoring of the book is the best in DCI this year. Then the last 1/3 of the show just blows you smack away!

They are not clean enough to beat the Blue Devils...not yet. Let's see what happens in Indy. Should be a great 1 vs 2 matchup.

They need to close the gap though.  They've been going in the wrong direction since Atlanta.

So far I loved Boston the most. Total show from music to drill to guard to marching and overall visual. Great theme with a beautiful ballad.

Phantom Regiment gets my most improved award. They have a fun show and I love the last 2 minutes. That's classic Phantom.

Crossmen have one of my favorite music books of the summer. That will be a must listen on radio in the car. Not sure about the visual, but they are marching well. Overall a strong corps, but that music is just AWESOME!

The Cavaliers are one of the best visual ensembles in DCI this year. Visual proficiency, analysis, killer guard -- it's all there. Cavaliers also have an excellent  percussion section, and brass is quality. But I continue to be underwhelmed by the music -- both in choice and construction. Too choppy and seemingly tossed in for a quick effect. They definitely perform well but I do not see any chance they pass Bloo or Crown. They just do not have the construction, achievement, or demand in brass and total music. Having said that it's a fun show.

When I saw the Cavaliers in Allentown this past weekend, I was not impressed.  The guard is good but the show design seemed very cluttered and there was too much going on at the same time.  I didn't really get pulled in by the music either.  I was expecting to really love this show from all the hype I've been hearing about it but it just didn't do anything for me.

I wonder to what extent they care about scores anymore. The reaction the kids have at the end of this show really says it all. I wouldn't march any other corps right now. Not for any guaranteed medal.

The crowd reaction was so explosive at Allentown last night. The Blue Devils were waiting to come on and the crowd was so loud for the Bluecoats.  It was electric!

This is quite an interesting discussion.  A couple of sub-topics need clarification, IMO:

    • Judging DCI, DCA, etc. is not a professional career.  The actual pay is very low (much lower than WGI or BOA, etc.), and the "average" judge does about 4 shows per season.  Most judges actually report a financial loss for their tax exposure from drum corps judging.  If you do it enough, the frequent-flyer miles are pretty good, however.  That's about it.
    • There is some formal communication during the competitive season among adjudicators and administrators, but not much.  Judges are most always professionally engaged in some sort of "day job" outside the marching activity - in fact, most use vacation time to judge shows.  So the idea of this collective roster of full-time judges ready for deployment is not one based in reality.
    • No musical scores, drill charts, etc. are ever submitted to adjudicators before, during, or after the season.  It has been discussed over the years, but to this point has not been attempted.  As stated earlier, the charts would change daily, if not hourly.
    • I know it probably disappoints some, but the idea that there is any fiduciary link between a judges' scoring patterns and ANY direct or indirect relationships in the pageantry community is fallacious and insulting to all involved.  To a person, judges are first-and-foremost advocate/fans of these youth activities whose professional lives are focused elsewhere.  Of all the hired labor in drum corps (administration, design, instruction, consulting, etc.), adjudication is easily the least financially profitable.  In fact, considered from purely an economic standpoint, the pay and non-existent benefits are quite sub-standard in light of the education, training, experience, and diverse skill-set required to perform at such a high level.  These are special people.

So I think what you're saying is that the judges do it because they love the activity.

Glad to see they're closing the gap. However, my standards are still high for Cadets and 5th, 6th, 7th etc is still unacceptable to me. Good job Cadets, now keep it going.

Glad to see the upward momentum as well.  Hopefully, they don't just get close and then stay behind Boston the rest of the season.  I want to see them actually pass another corps and stay ahead of them.  Nothing against Boston - I have liked the Crusaders since I first saw them in the 1990's but I just want to see the Cadets do something other than drop and linger for the rest of the season.  They need that confidence that they can do it.

i was not in San Antonio yesterday. I did not see the live streaming either. But I did look at the re-caps this morning and am quite intrigued. There is not a consistency at all between judges in the same captions, great fluctuations (not always positive) in relative placements against the same competitors within the last two weeks, and some surprises. For instance, glad to see Cadets guard out weigh BAC whose guard has been scoring quite well.

All this and the rumor of GH having 13 pages of changes to tweak leads me to wonder are we approaching the time when all corps start adjusting their shows to who is in the booth or on the field rather than fixing the show against an amorphous ideal? Some of the placements of certain corps sections from Houston to San Antonio strengthen my intrigue beyond the obvious that one show was outdoors and the other is not. I suspect the corrections and judging are getting both more subjective and personal.

Yes. The scores within the captions vary especially in GE.  There is no clear winner across the board which will leave things open as to who the eventual champion will be.  Makes things exciting.

    today ..... not great.

Good chat last night but today ...
was difficult. Perhaps it was the heat but the back half of the day was far from successful.

To be honest .... and I am on purpose this year, I was more frustrated with these folks than at any time I can remember over years and years

Our kids need to learn to listen, to learn, to push when it hurts , and to perform.

Stop waiting .... our time is here.
Today ... even if it's not perfect

We will see what the evening brings.

    I love these kids.
I love all the Cadets but this group is special.
They came through the criticism, they believe in a show that asks you to believe ....
and they are getting better and better.

With three weeks to go ...
this when we learn who we are, the character we hold and the future possibility of our lives.

Reminds me of a great quote ... below.

    I pushed today.
I am going to push tonight.

    Fly my friends ...

    Fly
