Blue Devils absolutely does deliberately appeal to the judges. They do it better than anyone else in the activity, and the proof is the last decade of gold medals. You may choose to see that as a criticism, but it's a statement of what I think is pretty clear fact. And I think it is a clear statement of respect.

Everything else you say I totally agree with.

There was a time not long ago in which if I were introducing someone to drum corps, I would have them watch Blue Devils, maybe Cadets. In the 80s it would be Cavaliers. Now, I am just as likely to point them to Carolina Crown, Bluecoats and SCV. Each has in essence done what Blue Devils have mastered, which is carve out a unique style and direction. What they have not yet done is systematically build in multiple scoring concepts that build their rep with judges, at least at the level Blue Devils do.

What is difficult about drum corps for me, having worked in performing arts my whole career, is that in music and drama, what is "gotten" by the crowd on the stage live is all that matters. And that is not the case with drum corps. That makes it hard to understand why one corps scores better than another.

And as the activity grows, it will most certainly grow with people who have precisely no clue about the history of drum corps, and really don't care about how someone grips a drum stick. Transparency is the key at dci. They have to get proactive about explaining the whys of scoring. Otherwise, people will get frustrated, and not be as convinced as we would like them to be that performance is all that matters.

While I would never notice how someone grips their drum stick (as I know nothing about drum technique), I think it is cool that they pay attention to the most minute details.  It may not mean anything to me, but it could mean something to the performers who now have a small link to their corp's history. I usually find out things like that after the season but always appreciate how the designers of the shows integrate small details that relate to their shows even though I never notice them.

Hop was just live; admitted that they totally blew the amp setups with the big wall at NIU. Talking about going through the remaining stadiums to figure out their idiosyncrasies,  amp placements, etc. and plan to overcome those challenges.

Why haven't they done that before? Why haven't they been doing that for 14 seasons???

He even admitted that after all of his years in drum corps he doesn't have it all figured out.

Well I guess we can call it a season y'all.

Tired of this every year getting excited about a show and Cadets sink lower and lower.

Gosh I miss the 90s when they were great.

I like the show, but apparently, it's not competitive enough and they may even get passed up by BK. VERY sad. Say what you want, but Cadets getting passed up by Boston was a blow. BK are coming to get them..

Ahh well. 802 pages of a Cadets thread just leads to nothing but a show that doesn't grab and has no hope for even 6th place.

    Here's hoping for next year....again.

I hear ya! However, I'm putting my hope in SCV this year. Great to see them back in the thick of things.  Hope they can go all the way.  It's funny; I like a lot of corps like CC, Bluecoats, SCV, PR, Cavies, Crossmen, etc but I always go back to the Cadets as my favorite even if I like other corps' shows better.  I guess there's some sentimentality there that just won't quit.

To each his own. 2017 SCV is my favorite show in a very very long time. I think it has plenty of heart.

I can't wait to see SCV in Allentown.  I would be so excited to see them win another championship. BD and the Bluecoats will be fighting them for the title though.

  5. It sounds like from some of the reports that it's the same story as the last few years: Cadets will not be improving enough to overtake their closest competition that's already ahead of them and may even slip.  Kind of tired of hoping that they will return to the "glory days."  They have lost their way.

Lol, but on a serious note, I think what would get ME personally excited is if Cadets presented a powerful show where it was more than just happiness, religion, presidents, Americana. Something like an updated When the Kings go off to War, but a more modern version that has more fighting and death and a powerful hornline and aggressive drumline and guard.

That's the show that made the Cadets my favorite corps before I started going to competitions to see them live.  I saw it on PBS and thought, "wow!  what a cool show and drill!"

Agreed. Since 2012 they have always finished lower than they started out. I thought that would happen this year, then I didn't, now I think it might. BUT, I think the difference this year is BAC has a really great show. I think this is the best Cadets show since 2011 and that's a very good thing 4th or 7th.

If I like the Cadets show, that will be good for me even if it doesn't place as well as I would like.  Last year's show was so disappointing.  I really haven't loved Boston's shows the last few years either even though they are a favorite of mine too.  I hope I like both shows.  I would really like to see a battle and some competitiveness there.

  8. Quote from Hop on FB:

Onward to Chattanooga for a day of rehearsal and laundry.

Congrats to Boston. I am sure they are excited this evening.

For the Cadets ... back to work.
We have endings and re-writes and additions and subtractions.

It's a long year .... lots to do ... lots to take on.

And as I explained to the kids today, to not believe in the possibility of hard work is to be a cynic. And there is nothing attractive in expecting the worst.

Work hard .... question all ... look for a better way ...
but trust the process. Trust the ideas. Trust who you are and what you have to give the world.

And ... you lose once and a while.

    Happy evening to all ...

I know Cadets have been focused on learning their new ending and travelling but they need to get to start cleaning the rest of the show.

I just watched their run from Orlando and they really are not getting much cleaner. Guard seems also not to be getting much cleaner. Hoping they can get the ending sorted and really dig in.  I'm sure this is why the gap is growing between them and Cavies and Crown (and closing with Boston).

Stil my 2nd favourite show of the year (after SCV)

This is the same thing as last year.  Never could get clean enough to compete with the other corps who were cleaning faster.

Cadets still 2+ points out from Crown with full panels in place. May still need some second views from some judges. One EFFECT guy had them close to Crown, another way down. No glaring deficiencies from Cadets just down a little in everything becomes 2points.

Cadets have opened up spread over Boston and closed one over Cavies so they are wiggling around but right now Bloo, BD, Crown are in the 79 range so there are your preliminary medalists. Cadets must continue to work hard and smart. We need either percussion or guard to shine. Will need one super category. Word is Cadets had sloppy guard run. No time for off runs.

Yeah, their guard came in 3rd which is surprising since they were placing very well earlier in the season.
