Well, go look up past scores and tell me when someone over came a 4 point deficit in mid- to late- July to pass someone in recent years. I doubt you will find more than 1 or 2, if that. It just doesn't happen any more.
I decided to take this challenge mostly because I was curious - I started with the 90's because I just know it better, but gave up after 20 minutes of searching. It was a unicorn then too.
1992 - July 24th Cadets 88.0 - Star 91.9 (close enough to 4 points to count)
1997- July 27 Madison 90.0 - Crossmen 84.3 (tied for 5th semi-finals)

who knows what the age of the person was. but several people in uniform have confirmed that night they fanned the stands looking for "the ###### that ruined our CD"
He was 15, at the time. Anyway I suppose it was a fruitless search since he made it back to the bus unscathed.

one note...the Crossmen drumline wasnt happy with the scream. they kinda went looking to see if they could find them
Really? As in they literally went looking for a 15 year old kid who screamed "Crossmen Drumline"?

the uniform looks rather unfinished with nothing on the top.
My exact thoughts. I actually like the uniform, but it sort of begs for the aussie.

I would guess around 2002.
That's a fair guess, it's the last year that the Crossmen came within 3 points of the Blue Devils. They couldn't close the gap with Cadets that year though.

Regardless of the small panel, no close competitors, etc.... when was the last time crossmen were within 3 points of the cadets?
August 3rd 1992:
Cadets 90.3

I guess this is how you load the pit onto the top level... no human lifting required! Very fancy.

It was not uncommon in the late 90's for the DM of a corps to have the same or very similar uniform to the rest of the corps. Sometimes there were color changes, or some emb
At any rate, your recollection may be a little off on some of your timeline as well.
Kara wore an all white version of the uniform in 1997, with the exception of the cross on the front of her uniform.
In 1998 she wore a uniform that was virtually all black, that resembled a dress in some of the portions, while the corps wore a uniform that was most definitely modified post 1996-1997, being all black and white for the 1998 corps proper. Which of course means that the 1998 corps was not wearing a hand-me-down uniform.
You're both sort of right. End of the season DM uniforms were a black see through thing with the guard leotard underneath. Early to mid season the DM's wore this: http://crossmenalumni.org/1998photos/2zjth9ztigbx9pth0g6dyqs0mgzqj7
They were absolutely hand me downs. They are the exact same jackets the corps used since 1990 with obvious changes. There was such a shortage of XL jackets that for the first few shows 5 or 6 of us wore sweatshirts with red triangles sewed on!

Crossmen 1996
Crossmen certainly get the award for most improved that year. I think we might have had 25 horns at the May camp that year. I would love to see a video from our first show in Bayonne.

You don't think 1988 is the most popular Madison show?
Maybe it is. Its hard for me to gauge how a show that I never saw live was received. 1995 Madison was widely loved at the time and is still talked about constantly.
-
-Crossmen 1992- Not really the corps (which was on fire at finals), but the fan screaming "Crossmen drumliiiiiiiiiiiiiiine," and then the ding of the final note
The same guy screamed "Crossmen drumline" in 1993 before the start of the third song. He had a friend join though.

Shows that weren't underrated, ever:
95 Madison- Maybe THE most popular Madison show ever.
93 Phantom- coming off of an 8th place finish in 92 and bumping to 3rd in 93. New look, super strong corps, the crowd LOVED the crab step at the end. That was a very popular show. In fact for me personally 93 and 94 are my two very favorite Phantom shows.
97 SCV - That show was killer. The best SCV show before this was probably 1991. First top 3 placement since 1989. I can't think of a more popular show in 1997.
-
I feel like the '93 recordings are fine...'95 and (even worse) '96 are another story. Not sure how that happened.
IBM got involved in 1996 from what I remember. They sound awful.

I doubt there will be any big name staff additions.
Crossmen need to retain their members and take another step forward with design to challenge for single digits next year.
I hope so. I really like the direction the corps is moving. Boston has changed their staff 4 times in the last 4 years. That probably contributed to them nearly dropping out of finals this year.
-
These moves to Boston are interesting. But are kids flocking to Boston? I am just asking. Are they doing another old school show like this one from 2016? Will the talented kids follow to the northeast? I am curious what folks think.
In 1997 Crossmen when Thurston left and Hannum/Mcnutt came in it was a complete battery of rookies other than 2 guys. A very large percentage of them came from Umass Amherst. If history is any indicator there will likely be some different kids in that line next year.
-
Just disregard what I said. I'm not involved with the corps and have no idea what I'm talking about. I just want the members the have a positive experience and enjoy the season.
-
I have to agree and disagree with you here. Yes, they really are on the cusp of something great. If they were to end up at the top of their neighborhood, they could be as high as 8th potentially. Only time will tell.
I agree that there probably is a lot of pressure from the alumni to move up. 3 of 4 years in 12th place would make any alumni group want the corps to have a breakthrough year and move up. But I also feel that the same happened in 2012 as the season progressed and they saw what was happening. But I know that the corps had a blast that entire season, regardless of the pressure from alumni. I'm sure it is much the same this year. From what I've heard so far, they are having a great time and loving the new staff and the approach they bring.
If anything, I think some pressure might be more on the admin/design side of things with the staff change. It was controversial and curious when it was announced only a week or two after last season ended. I think it would be more pressure for the new staff to produce results and not be another staff change after only a couple seasons of slow progress upward. This corps has gone through way too many staff changes recently. It would be nice to see what a staff can do that is in place for more than 2 or 3 years and actually truly build something. It can take time to get things moving. Slow and steady wins the race. Hopefully they have patience with the new staff, even if there is only marginal competitive improvement this season and next.
But that could all be null if they really do have that breakout year that we are talking about.
I could be wrong, and I hope I am.
-
It's still early to make changes and it's a very good show.
I agree, I think the show is solid. It needs a few bells and whistles maybe, but mostly they need to clean it up. Every section is dirty. It's easy to see why Phantom is beating them by 3-4 points. While Phantom doesn't have my favorite show they have some GE that's working and they are much cleaner right now. The Guard is a star this year!
-
Yes, I only got to see Cadets from periscope. Thanks to whoever that was. Wish we could see the other corps, but I'll take one.
The Cadets definitely sounded fantastic for the most part. The brass and percussion are incredible. I saw some good changes in the visual. Still not wild about the last minute of the show (after the big push). Too much chop n bop, too mundane and not really effective, visually or musically. Also, I still think they can just get rid of the front platforms. I don't feel they add anything special. They could still have their brass run to the front if they wish, but I'm not sure what special significance that short platform holds. Visually it's kind of plain.
Short of that, I think they are performing very well musically (very tough book, too), and the visual will continue to clean. Just hoping they can make some sense of this show for GE sake.
You're welcome

They are really on the cusp of something great this year. Depending on the mood of the corps they could really bump up. I watched them rehearse this past weekend and I get the feeling they are under a lot of pressure from the alumni move up in placement. I really hope that the kids are enjoying their summer. Having a great show design is only part of the equation, if everyone is miserable by the end of the season it will take it's toll.

Are they down to two tenors now?
4 at rehearsal in Bristol July 5th.

It's somewhat disappointing to me that the corps decided to drop the cymbal line because a flash in the pan caption head wants it that way. I'll just wait till the next one comes along and reinstates it. It shouldn't be long.
I'm not sure why Lane has such a difficult time with orchestration and education of a cymbal line. I think it's probably a bad decision to hire a guy who says things like this, [emphasis mine] "The bottom line is I have a clear vision of what I want my percussion section to be..." Doesn't sound like someone who cares about the history of the corps or is a much of a team player.
I hear they are fundraising for a new box truck though...
