  1. IMO the only "LOCK" in DCI right now is Devils to win.

...and I'm not sure I would even go that far at this point. Nobody is stuck where they are right now. There is enough time to boost the GE scores and clean up perfomance scores. Remember in 2012 Crossmen never beat the Blue Stars till Semifinals. They trailed them by 1-2 points all season. Troopers have been on Crossmen's heals all year.

  2. Well...just a few days ago the Colts were within a point of Crossmen. In San Antonio they were 4+ points behind them.

I hope their score doesn't drop even more by the time they get to Atlanta!

Obviously, BD would still be at the top in their scoring range of other corps even if they went on first.

But was that really because of the the draws either of those corps received? Score drops and jumps are sort of the nature of regionals. I understand you are upset that the Colts dropped but when you start adding corps the point spreads tend to change. It's always been that way. I can remember when I marched in Crossmen in 98 we dropped 5 points in three days when we headed into Drums Along the Rockies(which at the time was a regional). I understand how it can be a bit of a shock, but this is nothing new unfortunately. The Colts have a good chance at rebounding from this. There is still time to jump ahead from this show. It's really up to the members of the Colts at this point. This is the time of the season where members tend to get exhausted and discouraged. The next three weeks are the absolutely most important in the season. They are also the hardest!

  3. 1993 Blue Devils was not an underrated show. People loved it at the time. They came on 4th place overall and their brass won, tied with Star. Just because they didn't get first place doesn't mean it's underrated. Cadets, Star, and Phantom also had great shows they year and were slightly better. I would say Star had the underrated show that year. At DCI north in Buffalo that year people didn't know whether to clap or not. There was not a lot of crowd reaction to that show other than puzzled looks. Of course now everyone loves it and it's probably one of the most popular shows if all time. But make no mistake, it was highly underrated in 93.

  4. I know that sometimes or a lot of times BK is not the sexy topic to talk about on DCP, but they sure should be.... While folks continue to plug them in at 11-12 come finals they're making a big time run. 78.8 last night in Wash. That's huge.... They were 8 pointed by Santa Clara a few weeks ago and now have chopped that to 3.4! That's a significant stat. I feel they'll be competing with Phantom and even Cavies before its done.

I think they have a great show this year. It will be interesting to see how they stack up once they see everyone. But I have a strong feeling they will sit 7-9 when all is said and done.

  5. I never realized how many staff have Central NY roots that are working with this corps. I would love to see them improve to the point of making finals. It will definitely take some doing for sure. As far as rumors about big staff changes, I wouldn't read too much into it in the middle of a season. I can't imagine any reasonable administration is trying to lock new staff for next year in the middle of July. I think fixing broken buses, making sure the corps eats and moving a large number of people great distances is probably slightly more important.

  6. Very proud of this group. I got to watch ensemble rehearsal and meet with members of the drumline. Very good group. The show is terrific, and with the constant change and improvement to the show, could definitely be looking at top 12.

I think you are right. This is definitely a step in the right direction for this corps. The drumlime is only .7 behind Blue Knights last show. Definitely the best sounding drumline from Crossmen in many years. I'm really excited to see how they stack up against some of the corps on the midwest and east tours. I think there is a strong possibility of 11th or 12th place this year!

  7. After attending the Bristol, RI show a couple of days ago I have been wondering what the best approach to the season is. I found a stark contrast to what Crown was doing vs. what the Cadets were doing. Both corps are obviously excelling at a high level at this point in the season and there is little doubt in my mind that they will both be in the top 4. Crown has so many things going on in the show at this point. It appears they have added every single bell and whistle already. The Cadets on the other hand have a very polished show but at this point it is marginally connecting with the audience i.e.(there aren't a lot of oohs and aahs). The Cadets in the past have frequenlty added more as they go and I have no doubt the finishing touches will be there before Allentown. I guess where I'm going with this is has Crown given away too much too early? Does it make sense to have all of the design elements there before you step off in June, or is it best to clean the skeleton of the show and top it off with the gravy as you go?

  8. Can anyone that was there/saw videos give some insight on the close margin between Spirit and BAC? How do they compare?

I think tonight there were some truly beautiful sounds coming out of Spirits hornline, particularly in the opener. I think there were just a lot of things to like about the first 1/3 of their show. The crowd response was very positive. I think the reaction was only topped by Bluecoats and Crown.

Boston's show is not only dark and complex but fairly demanding. I would say significantly more demanding than Spirit's. The effect isn't there yet and I think much of that is due to performance issues. But it's only July 3rd. Boston is bound to be more comfortable tackling the show with another month of reps. I do think they are solidly in the pack fighting for the last few spots in top 12.

  9. I think one of the biggest problems with having a corps in NY is the demanding schedule that the competitive bands have in the summer. I can't say exactly what each bands requirements for attendance are, but many of the bands especially the ones in the Syracuse area rehearse fairly frequently throughout the entire summer. I realize not everyone is in High School, but when starting a corps from scratch the local HS kids are going to be the majority of your membership. To threaten to take several kids from a program throughout the season where they are learing the show would likely result in no support from local band directors. Those are the people you need to be friends with in order to get things off the ground.

  10. The gap really closed tightly between Spirit and Boston in the past few days to less than two points last night in Lawrence MA. Not sure if this will hold past July, or even past this show for that matter. But if it does we can safely add Boston to the Troopers, SOA, Crossmen, Blue Stars, Blue Knights mix for a very tight competition for 9-14 this year. I can't wait to see what the first regional brings.

  11. For the corps at the top, cadets, BD, Crown now, its an expectation to be in that competition for gold or to medal. Anything less is a disappointment. These corps also draw the top talent so i doubt they will be discouraged for future seasons from going for it again.

This really isn't the mission of the Cadets. I marched in Crossmen during the YEA years and had numerous coprs meetings with George Hopkins and regardless of what people think of him his goals aren't winning. I can't know what other directors are thinking honestly but I have my doubts that it is all about winning for them either. From George's mouth:

  12. Am I the only person who thinks predicting actual scores before seeing a performance is entirely pointless? What are you basing your number on? Are you basing a point spread on historical placements? Really, why even think about that? Just watch the shows and enjoy them. The only reason scores aren't entirely meaningless to me is they determine who makes finals. Other than that I could not possibly care less who wins and who gets 20th and even less about whether a corps was high box four or low box five. Scores, trophies and medals are meaningless in the grand scheme of this activity. To prove my point: What was Star of Indiana's 93 finals score? Can anyone honestly recite that without looking it up?

  13. The first open class corps I ever saw live was Crossmen 1992 in Cohocton, NY. They held an impromptu clinic after the show the night before was canceled. The lineup was originally supposed to be Spectrum, Patriots, Venturers, Sky Ryders, Dutchboy and Crossmen. I got to see the show twice in a row. The first time they stopped after every song to explain that portion. The second time was just a full run. I honestly have a hard time finding shows that I love more than that one ever since. It is by far the best Crossmen show. Nothing complicated about it. Just a solid book played well.
