  1. Is it just me, or does the first big hit in the ballad have a very similar chord progression to Bluecoats' version of Creep? I've noticed it three times -- once on the rehearsal vignette just before the dress rehearsal run through, once on the DCI webcast, and again on the bleacher POV just posted to youtube.

  2. The problem with younger drumcorp fan is they only see it online. They have no idea what it was like to listen to drum corps back in the 70's or 80's. They didn't get to experience ay the SCV ending in 87 or BD's amazing brass line in 1988. Madison was smooth as silk in 88. They were on all cylinders.

So, I've got a question for anyone that saw the Madison '88 performance live at finals (as I have only seen it on video). What is it exactly that sets the crowd off into baby throwing mode at the end? Is it the screamin' soloist, the drill move, or just the culmination of the entire performance? Its hard to tell from the video, since the camera angle doesn't catch the drill move into the final push until right at the impact point.

  3. You know ... Maybe they're trying to tell us something ... Could Crown be considering a Dark Side of the Moon show next year?

On corpsreps I couldn't find anyone doing a DSOM show anywhere near the top 12.

From the 2013 programs thread, for Carolina Crown:

    Music Selections:

    • Einstein on the Beach by Philip Glass
    • Also Sprach Zarathustra by Richard Strauss
    • Walking With Heroes by Paul Lovatt-Cooper
    • The Devil's Bridge by Bertrand Moren
    • The Abyss by Alan Silvestri
    • The Light Fantastic by Paul Lovatt-Cooper
    • The Dark Side of the Moon by Paul Lovatt-Cooper
Is this the music they were playing during the "prism" move?

  4. I'm absolutely terrible with technology so I can't provide any .gifs, but I absolutely loved

    - Phantom's book opening. Kinda cheesy? Sorta. But it still looked very cool. I just wish they closed the darn book at the end though

Absolutely this! I expected them to add this at finals. Close the book at the very last show, with a "The End" banner on the back cover.

  5. All of you are thinking FAR too small.

My ideal DCI weekend would consist of completing the following checklist, in no particular order...

    - Conducting Phantom's horn warm up

    - Designing a new, improved uniform for the Oregon Crusaders

    - The Cadets tenor line teaching me how to play (as in, from scratch.)

    - Learning how to spin & toss a rifle from the Blue Devil's guard (also starting from scratch. I'd bring my own helmet.)

    - Listening to the Battlestar Galactica soundtracks with the Bluecoat's music staff and bouncing arrangement ideas off of them

    - Creating a handful of drill sets and watching the Cavaliers try them out

    - Having a long chat over beers with Dan Acheson, Micheal Boo, Micheal Cesario, and just to keep things spicy, George Hopkins

    - Getting fundraising tips from whomever's in charge of such things at the Blue Devils

    - Conducting Vanguard in an on-field warmup

    - Shadowing a judge on the field to discover what the heck they're seeing & hearing

    - Co-announcing Finals with Brandt Crocker

So that's my ideal DCI weekend.

It's not too much too ask for, right???

That sounds more like a DCI fantasy camp. Something for us way-beyond-ageouts who want to experience what its like to be a part of a WC corps, but never did have the skills/time/money/other/alloftheabove to participate. Hmmm...could DCI coordinate such a thing? Would there be enough staff members willing to participate? Or would it be easier for a single corps to try to replicate a one week "corps experience fantasy camp," rather than try to coordinate an "all-star" version?

So, how much would one be willing to pay for such an experience?

  6. So, is there a trick to searching for shows that aren't on the "recently played" or "what's hot" lists? Say I wanted to add '91 Crossmen or '85 Empire Statesmen to my play list -- is there a way to filter out all the pop music search results and get into the drum corps stuff easier? I've tried the "artist" and "title" options, even the "t" time option. I've put corps names and show names in quotes, and still no luck. Anybody find the magic search?

  7. Good time as any to make my fist DCP post.

My first show was the 1973 RCA Championships at Vet's Stadium in Erie, PA. I don't remember much about it, except the Pittsburgh Rockets were defending champs, and the crowd went absolutely bonkers when they announced the Erie Thunderbirds had won. I also seem to remember a couple corps' shows where a marcher passed out at the end and had to be taken to a ambulance that was just beyond the end zone.
