What are your favorite non-mic'd horn solos this year? (Rare breed these days, but I love 'em.)
please list my options....I cannot think of any of note.
-
With the exception of amplification (electronics would be keyboards, synths etc. IMO) all the "stuff" listed as being "Crown-i-fying" of DCI started occurring well before 2004 and before Crown came along...
The Bridgemen danced, had props, had funky guard costumes, horn members changed clothes, etc. ...
they stopped fielding a corps in the mid eightes (If I am not mistaken)...well before the downfall attributed to Crown.
but Bridgemen did it well......and they did not "emote"

It's a shame you feel that way but it's truly your loss. The best is yet to come, I'm sure. The bar is being set higher and higher by corps and shows keep me entertained as always.
I'm sure we'll see you back soon.
I would not take those odds to vegas if I were you....maybe you've read "The Emperor's New Clothes"??????

I was pretty much gone last year.....the first year in a long time that I did not see a single DCI show nor buy anything DCI-related. But I have my memories of what drum corps was in its glory years and all the dvds and recordings....and I won't be seeing any more DCI as I do not want to taint all those wonderful memories. We have been fighting this fight for almost 15 years and warning them that this day may come if they did not heed the warnings....don't blame us for not trying. They may not miss me but for ###### sure they are going to miss my $$.

So what do I call a drum corps that uses(allows) trombones and sousaphones????? I don't......they are dead to me....
-
How about a different approach that blends the two ideas...
Propagate the activity by developing a path for small local groups to be purchased by existing drum corps. An aspiring drum corps businessman could then have a monetary goal for starting a local corps, even while he fulfills his desire to see kids participate.
If SS or DLB could develop local talent, and larger corps were interested in purchasing them to expand delivery of outreach, a local group could become a "wholly-owned subsidiary" of the larger corps and benefit from the more-experienced management and message offered.
This is done in corporate America all the time; part of the dream of starting a company is to sell it to a larger corporation, then take the profits and doing it again and again. There are many models where this works.
Why not in drum corps?
Drum Corps "businessman"??????? get real...just because you try to jam it into the mold of a "business" does not make it one....that's why drum corps has always been a not-for-profit activity...not because they chose not to make $$ but because there is no sustainable business model that would allow it to thrive and generate a profit as a business.

I don't think I would be so dramatic as calling anything that has happened with DCA corps as a "tragedy"....that's just silly.

we currently have a large NorCal and SoCal contingent and hold local rehearsals in Sacramento and Simi Valley and once a month we have a "camp" in central California. Those camps are typically a 6 hour block on a Saturday and we all carpool together. It makes for a long Saturday but it is lots of fun and we get a lot done. Get on the forum, drop us an email, and come on out to a rehearsal.

Thank you DCI, I won't ever have to buy another DCI ticket/DVD/etc... for the rest of my life!!!
-
hopefully I won't ever have to see mirrors used on the field again. :-)

All Celine Dion tunes as performed by a Drum & Bugle Corps
...oh yeah, there aren't any
....exactly.....
-
Morons, what they should have done is included the audio and cut the video.....
-
Thank you for not doing that anymore......
-
the real solution is to do away with electronics entirely but then again... "The Emperor has no clothes"

I got a link to this movie through Lone Star Percussion. It may not be marching band, drum corps or indoor percussion, but it's an amazing short film. The actor playing the lead is Dave Ratajczak, a phenomenal drummer. This may be the best 18 minutes you spend today.
Garry in Vegas
if IMDB is correct he is only 32 years old....that's some hard living!!!! he looks 60

If they pass electronics I will wish for a prelims like 2006 every year after that.
-
...till we see electronics in DCA? I am just asking since we have seen so many changes a la DCI (multi key brass). Less than 5? More than 5 but less than 10?
DCA performs in the rain.... water and electricity do not mix well. This will guarantee that it is NEVER!!!!!! YAY!!!!!! This is why it important that we NEVER move DCA Championships to a dome. Drum Corps is an outdoors activity!!!!

I get a kick out of some of the criticism Frank gets on the "other" side of DCP...LOL....regarding this article and others he has written.
He's forgotten more about music and drum corps... and the role of drum corps in the overall scheme of things... than many of his critics have ever learned.
Yup, it's like someone denying the existence of Bigfoot while one sneaks up behind them and goes "boo". Their perspective changes completely once they turn around......
-
I actually have not heard anyone who knows who Frank is disagree with him on his point. I welcome the rest of you to ask your instructors/director of your corps who Frank is... I think that will put the issue into perspective for you. I am pretty sure he has been working with corps up until at least the last few years so even though he is a dinosaur his experience is certainly not out of date. You could do a lot worse than Frank as a role model for your Drum Corps experience.
-
The article comes across as being written by a crotchety old drum corps guy. "Things were better in my day because..."
except this crotchety old guy has taught most of us and taught most of the instructors/staff/directors of most of the World/Open class Drum Corps. When Frank talks....you listen.

Actually, I pay piles of money to be able to go out every night in front of thousands of people and give them my everything on a field to entertain them and hopefully make some awesome memories for both me and the fans. Thanks
When I marched I did not do it for the fans, neither did a lot of people I marched with.
-
I'm just wondering how many fans/alums from 1990 onward get the reference!
I know there are a lot from before 1990 that are tired of the reference

But can Kanstul market those G horns to universities, high schools, middle schools, professionals, ad infinitum? Kanstul is the only company left really trying trying to sell them in a market where nobody outside of some old school drum corps people want G horns; Of course they are cheaper due to in stock items that are currently still made by one company trying to stay alive with an older product. But those companies who have factories that are still tooled to make VCR players or the older DVD players could also sell those prodects at a discount.
what "in stock items"????? Anyone needing more than 1 or 2 of a particular G horn will have to wait a few days while they make you one so the "old stock" argument is a non-starter.

I agree. While I understand the intent explained by Mr. Peashey, I don't think it's necessary.
Say a group of current DCI kids wanted to form a minicorps. If they're willing to put in the effort and money and entertain the DCA audience.... why not? The more the merrier -- let a thousand flowers bloom. If they have a great experience and come back, then we've successfully added to the numbers of performers (and probably performance quality and audience numbers, too).
DCA is great because it recognizes the activity in multiple variations; so eliminate all background requirements. We don't need to protect the scoring placements of middle age corps members, which is all the rule really seems to do. I would urge DCA to remove all age/membership restrictions -- which has the potential of growing and improving all aspects of this activity.
At the very least I don't think you would have to twist any arms to get DCA to allow you to do minicorps in exhibition. Just ask ahead of time and be nice and I am sure they would welcome you as long as the program is not full.

A concern I would have as a parent....if the board/staff knew then they are culpable also. If the board/staff didn't know how in the hell did they not know....they are not keeping themselves in the loop and aware of what is going on, they are incompetent. Either way would I trust my kid to decisions this organization makes???? This is Penn all over again....
